Quote:Is judging an important part of the MM show?
1) If "yes", attempts to make the judging system better shouldn't be "swept under the rug".
2) If "no", then you're just a meet up, not a car show. Do you want this event to be a meet up, or a car show?

Not to take away from the idea, i agree that planning should be taken far more seriously than it seems to be now or has been in the past.

Why not make MM the host of car meets in Harrisonburg? I feel like the club is so focused on track events and our usual shtick that we completely forget the whole reason that like 99% of new members want to join. People want to do racecar shit with their racecar friends, and no not in the hey lets go to a track kinda way. The turnout we get for the car show every year is great, but why does it have to be a "car show" anyways? Its basically more of a big car meet anyways, why not embrace it? Its not like we have super cool sponsors and awesome prizes anyways, don't make it out to be more than it is.

I have a fuckload of underdeveloped ideas, but I know I'm not alone in the sentiment that MM seems to be less about people who like cars and more about just being a generic JMU club that sits isolated from Harrisonburg and the surrounding area. Kinda pisses me off how little drive there is to engage with the community outside of our comfortable autocrosses.

We have a serious issue retaining members because they are turned off by the emphasis on structured club shit over just getting together to talk shop in a parking lot. I would kill to have a local meet equivalent to somewhere like Richmond or NoVa, why not make MM something which can involve that? There are dozens of people who at least have an interest in cars at JMU, but do you see them in MM? No.

Maybe this all needs to be in another thread or somewhere else, i don't know, but there are definitely deeper issues within the club that need some serious addressing so it stops being about 5-10 active people per year. Just look at the 40 people we had at the first meeting vs. what we have now.

Lol. I think this has been mentioned a hundred times now but the club was initially set out for getting people to the track (auotocross, motocross, bike racing, car racing, etc...) and still is heart to what MM is. That's just the way it is. Club isn't meant to be really much more and I twould take a whole lot of persuasive words to change alumnis minds.

Anyways, about the car show, alumni correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think there has been an organized park by your class car show? At least there hasn't been consistently from what I know or heard. Yes, we can make our car show better and all. I just think getting that serous and butthurt over prizes at a car show is kind of ridiculous. It is all for fun we aren't a car show club though.

Also, I think Taylor says that he will keep your idea in a bunch of others ideas because officers take enough shit no matter what they do. They can't please everyone. I'm sorry but just because they don't take your idea up and arms and say oh yes we are definitely going to do that is because they just can't do everything everyone wants. It just isn't going to happen.

I like the idea about similar classes being near each other though. Not saying it is hard to implement just saying it would be difficult to measure how many cars in each class and how much to save space for is all.

A lot of people left last year because it is a long ass car show. I'd saw shorten it and make it 2-3 hours and be done.

Just because the club is at heart a driving club doesn't mean you can't put on a kickass car show that is organized, efficient and well-received by students and the local community. We've done it in the past. For an example of the best show in MM's history, go back and look at what Goodspeed & co. put together in 2009.

LOL at "may get swept under the rug." That's an extremely diplomatic way to express how much you don't care.

+1 Its a car show, not a meet. Hold it as such as it is a money raiser for the club. It needs to be taken as seriously such.

Re: Spring car show 2016 PLANNING thread - Senor_Taylor - 12-13-2015

Jeez, guys. I really like the idea, but it's too early to promise anything so I'm just trying to make sure you know the idea is heard and acknowledge that it's on the radar. Of course we're going to make sure the judging is done right. I had nothing to do with the show last year, so don't bring up last year like it's my fault. Remember the year before with the prize packages and photoshoot at Steven toyota? That was me. I'll make sure it's taken care of. Forgive me if I don't promise you everY suggestion you give me as soon as you mention it.

Don't imply that I don't care. I care a whole hell of a lot. Don't insult me and say otherwise. We're going to do it big. It's December for crying out loud.

Y'all need to chill and tone down the sass a little bit. You're being pretty rude.

Just an example of how we planned things and did not work out was, Steven Toyota was supposed to come and backed out the morning of. They instead just gave us money.

And I'd say you are on the lucky end of the stick for having to deal with alumni this year. I took a lot of shit last year because people just assumed we did nothing and weren't listening.

I've definitely been looking at how things went down last year as a way to tackle this year for sure. I know last year was a lot of unfortunate events strung together.

Senor_Taylor Wrote:Howdy everyone.

We're leaning towards April 16th or April 9th as the day for the show.

When do the SCCA and NASA schedules come out?

OK so it looks like April 16 car show, April 17 autocross in Verona is what works best for BRR SCCA. If you guys can work with that we will lock in the date in our schedule.

Ray

Re: Spring car show 2016 PLANNING thread - RawrImAMonster - 12-17-2015

I'd say mid April is probably better than late March just for the fact that you have a better chance for nice weather.

Re: Spring car show 2016 PLANNING thread - Senor_Taylor - 12-17-2015

April 16-17th is a NASA track weekend at Summit. We figured that out after the initial post on this thread. April 9th is Madi-Palooza, so both of those weekends will not work. After that is getting pretty close to finals.

Re: Spring car show 2016 PLANNING thread - D_Eclipse9916 - 12-17-2015

How about April 2nd or April 23rd? 23rd sounds ideal...

Re: Spring car show 2016 PLANNING thread - ViPER1313 - 12-17-2015

My vote is the 2nd

Re: Spring car show 2016 PLANNING thread - Senor_Taylor - 12-23-2015

Ray, April 2nd is optimal for us. Madipalooza really kills our student attendance, which is kind of the whole point of the show, and Auto-X attendance is going to be abysmal with everyone heading to the NASA event.

I'm going to contact Ryan Steven Toyota once we have the date set to see if he's willing to sponsor again. I don't know what happened last year, but I know when I got him onboard my freshmen year, he really hooked us up with some awesome prizes.

Does anyone have any suggestions for getting trophies made?

Also, we are going to try to set up vendor/sponsor booths along the guard rail in C4 (our preferred lot, the one we got last year) , any alums have any business or anything that you want to jump on board with?

Re: Spring car show 2016 PLANNING thread - Senor_Taylor - 01-13-2016

Okay, we are set on April 2nd!

Contacted so far:
Steven Toyota
Ray
Ferrari Club of America - MA
Big Dogs Offroad

Some ideas so far:

1. Designated parking per category
2. REAL Prizes (Trophie, gift cards, swag bags)
3. A DJ setup. I can play the music like last year
4. Grills and stuff for the food. I'll donate my stand up grill
5. Judges. I suggest MM members
6. Quick clean up and an organized AND SAFE cruise
7. Mass outreach to students and MM propaganda everywhere. (MM Pong table sat somewhere on the side to show the logo)
8. Walkie Talkies for officers to communicate and to help on Cruise
9. Shorter car show times this year (10-2) so people don't get burned out. Cruise around 4. Dinner at 6. Reconvene for party at 9-10. We need to arrange car pooling to after party and have visitor spots saved
10. Invite everyone as early as possible

Re: Spring car show 2016 PLANNING thread - Jake - 01-13-2016

I like it, hopefully Ray & co can make an autocross happen on Sunday.

I think one thing that really must happen this year is having a dedicated announcer throughout the show. We have had one in years past and it greatly helps keep things moving, people interested, and the show more lively.

Great idea! Our DJ/Announcer bailed less than 24 hours before (He had his reasons) which is why I had to handle things. We'll look into it.

Just a heads up, Apparel order and Karting have been worked out and are about to be posted soon.

Re: Spring car show 2016 PLANNING thread - Jewels - 01-14-2016

I will officially have a guest bed in my guest room by the car show. I have Hannah that weekend so not too much extra floor space, but I have a couch and a chaise lounge downstairs. Also, If you want to stay, I'd just appreciate a little heads up, as I need to inform Rex of who will be staying since Hannah will be there.

Re: Spring car show 2016 PLANNING thread - Senor_Taylor - 01-19-2016

We've got Steven Toyota on board this year provided all of the food (and little more) for the show, and he'll be bringing some new cars to show and 99% certain that we're getting the photo room again as a prize for the category winners.

Re: Spring car show 2016 PLANNING thread - *insertusernamehere* - 01-20-2016

Boss says Advance Auto Parts is in. He'll probably set up a tent and pitch in for the goody bag prizes. I can also hand out flyers and tell people about it at work. Woo!

Nice work with the sponsors guys!
