Honestly though, if automated turrets or drones with guns attached to them are largely frowned upon by the law for public use, and the law hasn't caught up with automated cars either, why is it ok to allow any sort of computer or remote access to the brakes, throttle, steering of a car that operates in a public space? I'm not so worried about a networked thermostat or refrigerator, as its ability to damage persons or property is limited, but a car is a weapon. Good lord the government can regulate headlights, bumper heights, mirrors, glass, seatbelts, airbags, and inspect my car at will, but if the damn controls aren't counted as safety equipment then wtf. :evileye:

The "stuck throttle" debacle *could* have taught us something but wait 'till people start claiming the car steered them into that group of schoolkids.

Considering the only publicly known exploit of the Nest requires phyiscal access... I don't think you'll be losing much sleep over someone hax0ring your nest.

Sorry, my sarcasm filter was not tuned up enough. It was a joke, the Nest is probably one of the least worrisome things I use for getting haxored considering internet banking, swiping my credit card, online shopping, WIFI, and all the entities that have your personal information. (see banks, government, etc who hold a ton of people's information that are 10x more likely to get hacked).

Yeah I wasn't talking about someone fucking with your AC. I've read a few articles about people possibly getting onto your network through devices like a nest or smart appliance and then stealing your data. No idea how likely this is, just throwing it out there.

interesting to me how we have crept up on this capability over the years such that every single part of the car is operatable electronically.
brakes - auto saftey brakes
steering - auto parallel parking
throttle - radar cruise control
ignition/access - smart key

now they add LTE connected / wifi hotspot so your spoiled brats can watch netflix in the backseat.

so you stir it all together and you have a 100% hackable car without even noticing

Wifi enabled house locks or garage door are an obvious security gap, don't sleep on the "smart fridges" either as a lot of them apparently store your financial info for purchases and offer easy access to your home network. Nest I wouldn't be super concerned about either, although theoretically if you had it on a off-on cycle for when you leave for work if someone really wanted they could start to draw a pattern as to when you are potentially home / not home.

the only difference between a smart home and an ADT is that you pay money every month for yours.
It is (alarm response runs through cellular signal with battery backup though) but our system does not allow physical access or a view into our home in any way. That's the difference. I bought the system so that police would be alerted when I / we are away from home and to wake us up in the event someone gains entry to the home (three story townhome) so I can empty a mag of hollow points into them
