Damn Jon this story/what happened to him sucks. I hope he has some semblance of his life back ASAP.
Back in January the son of a long-time family friend was killed on his bike in Florida. Lady pulled out in front of him at an intersection, he was an aerospace engineer with a wife and little kid

I almost didn't exist because of that. When my dad was a teenager he was coming over a hill on his bike carrying too much speed. An old guy in some big boat of a car (this would've been in like '79) was pulling out without looking and my dad went right over the hood. Said he landed on his back and opened his eyes to see the bike coming down at him, he rolled over and it smacked down right where he had been laying. First responders were a couple of police officers who decided to throw him in the car and take him straight to the hospital instead of waiting for an ambulance, he was bleeding so much (safety gear, what's safety gear?).
That's just one of many life threatening situations my dad went through as a teenager, mostly his own fault but not strictly. Pretty sure he was born with 9 lives and burned through all but the last one before 21. :lol:

Update for anyone who is interested:
He has started occupational therapy. I don't know too many details as to whether he is fully out of the coma or not. He was able to stand yesterday with assistance though. Making some slow but steady progress it seems.

Another good update
He is off the feeding tube (removed it himself lol) and is talking a little bit. Therapy seems to be going well. His parents have arranged an air ambulance to move him back to Florida where they live to continue therapy. Should be within the next couple weeks.

Bikes are a scary thing. I ride well below my limits and always, always ride in full gear, even if its just a jaunt around town. I know it sounds goofy to do that but after riding for awhile, you learn how fragile a human being is when connecting with pavement at 10 mph. I dropped my r6 at that speed and it ripped my jeans and scuffed up my leg pretty good. Can't imagine what a full on crash at anything more would be like, but wouldn't be good. Hope your buddy is recovering well, Jon.

Forgot about this thread. For anyone who cares, he is doing better day by day. His parents had him transported from California to Florida via an air ambulance to continue therapy near their home. He is walking with a walker and the help of a therapist and eating on his own again I believe. He was able to text me and we had a short conversation, but he is definitely not all there. Nobody is sure what will happen with the severity of his brain injury.

Forgive me if I'm wrong but it sounds like your buddy is doing far better than what was expected for his injury no? Was the original diagnosis a little more dire than the actual injury was?

I figured it would be months before he could be transported as a person must be able to eat on their own and get in and out of a wheel chair with assistance before the air ambulance will fly you. About 75% of people with a diffuse axonal injury never recover and are vegetables. The 25% that do recover, recover in various states. Hopefully he will regain full mental and physical abilities over time. Only time will tell.
