Re: Project/Daily FR-S - interfooler - 12-03-2014 Another little update from the week of Thanksgiving: I forgot how much I like the stock wheels when they're one color. Kind of want to redo them in gunmetal (plastidip), but I have a nice coating on already and it's a little too cold. Also don't feel like shelling out the money for it. Only thing I dislike is how sunken they are and how obvious it is when lowered. I do not want to spend money on spacers, let alone run an inch wide spacer that some people do just to make the wheels flush. I had gotten condensation and water buildup in one of my tail lights (common problem). Set up an appointment to get new ones (via a TSB) and a new trunk seal. Now I'm back to clear tail lights. I'll get around to tinting them red at some point again, once it's warmer. And to add to my luck, Tuesday night before we got hit with the snow storm (NJ) I was driving on the highway and my right front brake caliper seized up. Luckily I was within 3 miles of home, so I limped the car back and parked it till I could take a look at it. After a few tests, I determined it was the caliper. I spent the better half of Wednesday trying to source a new caliper and came across a used one for $150 that I could have in a day in a half, and a set of used ones on ebay for $120. Went back and talked to Toyota and was able to get a new one for $170 after tax.... ordered it but didn't pick it up. Decided to take apart the caliper and clean off everything and put new seals on.... that solved my issue. Went back and cancelled the order and got a refund. The whole process was a big headache since I had to be back on the road first thing Saturday, and with the holiday, I lost a day waiting for things to ship/arrive, so that's why I decided to tear it apart in hopes to fix it ASAP. ...I guess some debris had gotten inside, which caused the piston to get stuck or return slowly. Also, I ordered a lightweight crank pulley from Raceseng. I wanted to swap out all, but this was less money. Baby steps for now. I've also been debating on new wheels/tires for a while now. I know what I want, but I don't know if I really should spend the money. I would use it mainly as an autocross setup to help gain some life out of the tires, but I still need to do some financial planning. Maybe I'll pull the trigger later this month. Re: Project/Daily FR-S - SlimKlim - 12-03-2014 Are you already out of warranty? I'd think a sticking caliper is something they should fix for you. Re: Project/Daily FR-S - interfooler - 12-03-2014 For the warranty that covers that, I was out by about 1,500 miles.... Something that I could probably be goodwilled (is that a word?) into. The only issue was with the snow and holiday, everyone starts to freak out, so the dealership was swamped with work. They were essentially double booking and just taking cars as they got to them. I was really pressed for time and needed something done, so that's why I took it into my own hands. Luckily it seems like it was a simple issue. The time it took me to fix this vs the time I would be waiting (if I was able to get in on Friday) was well worth it. Re: Project/Daily FR-S - SlimKlim - 12-03-2014 Gotcha, makes sense. At least it turned out to be an easy fix. I had something similar happen to one of my old cars, one of the rear calipers stuck on and my dad and I had to take it apart and buff the sliders clean with steel wool. Re: Project/Daily FR-S - interfooler - 01-30-2015 Quick update: Got the crank pulley around Christmas time and put that on. Obligatory pic: ![]() The car probably isn't really any faster. Rpms do rise/fall a little quicker when the car isn't under load, it idles smoother, and there's no longer a violent shudder when I quickly let off the gas while cruising, so there's that, at least. Also had a little bit of a panic attack on Wednesday. I went to check my tire pressures and when I took the valve cap off from my front right, I started hearing a hissing. Immediately checked the pressure and put the cap back on. Hissing went away... Before trying to find where I put my extra TPMS sensor/valve assembly, I remembered I had a valve core tool. Got that out and lo and behold, it had come loose... In the few seconds I had the cap off, the pressure dropped 4 PSI. Glad that was a quick fix. And lastly, around thanksgiving or so, my font left fog light would cut off every now and then. Had a bad connection so I had to re-solder part of it. Now my right fog light is out -__- Thinking it may be a similar issue, but it's been too cold recently to go take a gander. Not a pressing issue, so it can wait a little bit longer Re: Project/Daily FR-S - Sully - 02-06-2015 These are like my girlfriends favorite cars and she doesn't like coupes for some reason. If they ever made a 4 door, she'd be all over it. But she knows that is a scion and we've had many conversations about them and I've told her that subaru has the same car. Well the other night, she says to me that she saw a new subaru that she really likes and it's very sporty looking. So with some small bit of hope, I say oh, could it have been the new sti? She says maybe so I pull up a picture and she still says maybe so on a hunch, i pull up a brz. "Yea I think that's it" Face palm. "Babe, that's the exact same car as the scion you like with a few different trim pieces" Well at least she's cute, right? Re: Project/Daily FR-S - SlimKlim - 02-06-2015 Scion is allegedly working on a sedan, could be her next whip. Re: Project/Daily FR-S - BLINGMW - 02-06-2015 Sully Wrote:Well at least she's cute, right?Dunno, pics? :dunno: I have nothing to add other than we test drove a FRS the other day and they are just as fun to drive as I figured. Cool car, keep up the good work! I kind of feel bad for not plunking down the $ for one, it's perfect. If I had to come up with complaints, it would be the availability of black only for interior, and the rear seats could just be a inch or two further away so I don't have to saw off my kids' legs. "new." That being said, my car will be 3 this August hock: ...or is it 2 since it's a MY2013? hahaSlimKlim Wrote:allegedly, rumors, speculationAs far as new versions and variants etc, I haven't the slightest clue. Since day one, there has been so much speculation, you could probably crush someone to death by writing everything on paper and then covering him/her with it all. I refuse to believe anything until there's an official announcement from toyota or subaru. By official, I don't mean someone saying they are "considering options A-D." That has been said numerous times by employees (not just at a dealership level). I don't really check out the forums anymore because there is so much useless garbage on there, among other things... :vomit: but like I said, I haven't been keeping up lately, so I'm a little out of the loop ATM. BLINGMW Wrote:I kind of want oneThanks! And as far as buying one, if you don' mind used, they can actually be had for relatively cheap now. Mine has lost so much value already. It's depressing haha. The only thing is, there are 3 different used toyobarus available: 1. I bought the car hoping I would like it, but it was lacking something, so I never truly liked this car 2. I bought this car and love it, but plans have changed (usually relating to personal matters) and it's just not practical anymore 3. I bought this car because it was cool but I got a ticket and I can't afford it anymore, but it's cool and all my friends like it and think it sounds sweet so I think I'll totally get one years down the road from now when I rethink my life, figure out what I want, when I'm a bit more mature and don't want to get the loudest parts available and modify my car that in a way that just screams "LOOK AT ME, I'M 16!" ...And also when I am a bit more financially established. Reasons 1 and 2 account for about 50% of the used market, I would wager. Those are the cars you want to buy. The remaining half from 3 is going to be abused and was probably (if it still isn't) riced out at some point. Also probably had an invidia n1 and a borlol header for that "subbie/boxer rumble". You may think I'm kidding, but I'm not. The stuff I've seen on facebook and the forums is just :evileye: :vomit: It is entertaining, to say the least. Re: Project/Daily FR-S - BLINGMW - 02-09-2015 interfooler Wrote:[. Lol... "new." :lol:It's funny, my wife said something similar, she couldn't picture the car when I mentioned it. Given they only manage to sell like <20k of them per year, and there's two of them I've seen around here (same as the number of Teslas), I guess it's excusable. :dunno: interfooler Wrote:The remaining half from 3 is going to be abused and was probably (if it still isn't) riced out at some point.Yeah I'm not surprised, I fear finding a decent one a couple years from now might be tough. But... at least it looks like most were manual trans. I bet there will be plenty of wrecked ones! Re: Project/Daily FR-S - interfooler - 02-09-2015 I'm not sure on exact numbers, but a good amount are manual. I think it's safe to say the majority are. Again, going back to (3) and immaturity, people that get automatics get made fun of/insulted/whatever on facebook/forums for not having a manual. :dunno: Yes, the auto does shift noticeably quick, but the gearing is a little longer so it's a bit slower, even though it's theoretically faster. Add the fact that it's not "pure" and people just give it shit. There's nothing wrong with it, though; it's a good transmission. Also due to (3), there are a lot of crashed and wrecked cars. You have the drift fanboys, people that think they are "elite" and "pro" by driving without traction control or stability management, but when they take a turn too fast (understeer) or it snaps back, they don't know how to control it and crash. I cannot count the amount of times I've seen those posts. They blame it on the tires or the weather.... But then you do also have the ones that were wrecked on track. With the market it was geared for (age is irrelevant), it makes the used ones a gamble to buy from someone you don't know. Doesn't matter if it's a brz or not. Re: Project/Daily FR-S - Jake - 02-09-2015 interfooler Wrote:Yes, the auto does shift noticeably quick, but the gearing is a little longer so it's a bit slower, even though it's theoretically faster. Add the fact that it's not "pure" and people just give it shit. There's nothing wrong with it, though; it's a good transmission. I've driven an automatic FRS... I think my Yukon has faster shift times. Re: Project/Daily FR-S - interfooler - 02-09-2015 Compared to regular automatic mode, the sport mode shifts significantly quicker... This is just relative, though. There is a reason most time attack cars and even the TRD cars (rally, griffon etc...) are all manuals. Re: Project/Daily FR-S - interfooler - 03-02-2015 Pulled the trigger. Ordered some summer tires. Went with Hankook rs-3s since I've had two sets before and liked how they handled. Really wanted some 225s, but no where had them, so I had to suck it up and get 215s. I've heard of people sticking a 235 of a 7" wheel, but I didn't want to push my luck since I have the absolute worst luck when it comes to things. :vomit: I was looking at other tires as well (rivals, star specs, r1r), both 215 and 225, but it really came down to cost justification: $120/tire or $160-70 ? Not only that, but would the extra 10mm (relative to manufacturer, here) be worth the extra cost? What would really be faster?...So I just got the cheapest option that I know works. Really would like some 17x9 wheels, but I just have different priorities and I don't need them right now. These tires were a good compromise to hold me for I don't know how long... But since I still have all seasons with good tread, these won't wear down after 6 months of use, which further justified my purchasing the tires, haha. Re: Project/Daily FR-S - Jake - 03-02-2015 You'll like the "v2" of the RS-3's... they're on the M3 and I like them quite a bit. Good call on the width, 235 on a 7" wheel strikes me as bulgy. Re: Project/Daily FR-S - interfooler - 03-02-2015 Good to hear. Bought them in good faith, since I've only used the v1 and have only heard of people using the v2. Just can't wait till it warms up again Re: Project/Daily FR-S - Tyler.M - 03-02-2015 Dang.... this makes me miss mine. One of the best cars I've ever owned. Re: Project/Daily FR-S - interfooler - 03-23-2015 Tyler.M Wrote:Dang.... this makes me miss mine. One of the best cars I've ever owned.Did you have anything done to it? What do you think of it compared to the gto? haha I got the RS-3s mounted over break back onto the white wheels. Was planning on going to the BRR test and tune and points #1 this past weekend, but I had a very long and tiring week. To top it off, I had an exhaust leak that massively developed over 3 days. Since I was so exhausted (pun intended?) and once I checked to make sure it was in fact leak (late Wednesday night) I was winded by the time I was done, after lugging tools around to my car. I decided to try something different... I called a shop first thing Thursday morning at 8am. I told them I needed a 2.5" donut gasket put on my car. I came in on friday afternoon... This is what really got me. They didn't have the parts to fix it. They expected me to just drop the car off and then try and source the parts.... I had stuff to do and told them what exactly they needed. They had a day and a half to find it.... Needless to say, I drove off, furious With that, I called a friend to help me find a gasket. I wasn't going to drive my car anymore since it was 76dB inside with windows up (louder outside). It was borderline unbearable and begging for a ticket. Long story short, we went to 5 different places, no one knew what this was (below) and some poor kid at one advance got me a sandwich gasket 3 times, when I kept telling him that was NOT what I needed. But after a long week, the fiasco with the shop, and 3 hours of sleep, this was the last thing I wanted to do. What is this????? ![]() But in the process, I also learned there was a different type of donut gasket: Not what I needed ![]() Anyway, this was my gasket. I'm pretty sure the salt had something to do with this. I finally sourced a part number for a 2.5" and had it shipped and ready to pick up at a local advance the same day ![]() So I got that put in Saturday afternoon. After that, I just wasn't feeling up to going to the autocross on Sunday. I needed a day to just be a vegetable. Another thing I did was "upgrade" my radio. I found an awesome deal on the 2014 frs head unit. It's touch screen, has great, snappy response, has better bluetooth integration and has slightly better audio quality. Best thing about it is that I can also upgrade it to be nav-capable. Went from this: ![]() To this: ![]() I'm happy with it so far. For the price I found it for, I had to jump on it, since I most likely wouldn't come across that deal again. So now, I go back to my previous statement of being done trying to modify my car, haha. :dunno: Re: Project/Daily FR-S - Senor_Taylor - 03-23-2015 Wow. I can't imagine having to deal with problems like that on such a new car. New HU looks sweet!
