...but how do you look past the ugly?

1) I'm not qualified to make aesthetic judgments. I drive and like our Honda Element, with a 2002 as my last car.
2) Beauty is about the last thing on my requirements list when looking for a car. The i3 could only be better if it was all unpainted plastic exterior and didn't have climate control. To ME, form is a distant 2nd to function.
3) To me it'd be like looking at a jet, or a spaceship and saying, meh, I don't want THAT, it's ugly. :evileye:

"I was tipped off by an anonymous follower here that the Spanish i3 online configurer has a not-yet-available option called "Bateria de mayor potencia" which Google Translate will tell you means "battery more powerful" in English. There isn't a picture for the option and you can't order it - yet."

Confirm or deny?

Re: BMW i3/i8 or other electric motor vehicles - Cody - 05-19-2014

Stoked you had the chance to check the car out! It basically sells itself once people have the chance to drive it and I say that in a completely non-bias way. I was really skeptical at first but really enjoyed how it drove, especially surprising and shooting around any car I wanted to from a red light... including an e92 m3 (up to 40mph).

Side note- Jake, I guarantee if you drive one of these you'll laugh at the fact you don't commute to work in one. It's a perfect NOVA car.

Another side note- I drove the i8 for a couple miles so feel free to hammer me with questions on that as well

Edit- Traction control off is in "vehicle settings" on the i-drive, scroll to it and you can turn it off with ease. It's especially fun on super oily Los Angeles roads when it rains for the first time in 3 months.

Edit+Edit= 2 Edit- The Spanish thing you're referring too sounds like a really rough translation of Eco Pro or Eco Pro Plus mode.. Sometimes stuff doesn't translate directly and I'm 100% sure there's no special battery ju ju out there right now. I have however heard from one of the engineers that this battery has a ton of room to grow

yes, it clearly does! Maybe they're hoping to have the first 6mo or so of these fly off the lot, get some feedback, and figure out how to best market it to a wider audience? I guess we'll see...

saw 2 of these last week in downtown DC at the same time, drove right past each other. havent seen one since.
very cool looking car.

I still search about once a week for promising anecdotes about highway range:

Marki3 Wrote:My commute is 62-64 miles round trip with 1500 ft elevation and nowhere to charge at work. Half on highway and rest on secondary roads. Drove a Rex model on that trip and got 82 miles with 8 miles remaining. Used AC the whole time, did 70-72 mph on highway and 60-62 mph on secondary roads. So, the BEV which is 350 lbs lighter and has the more efficient heat pump should easily make that distance. I hope so as I picked up my BEV yesterday! Will report back at the end of the week after doing the commute a couple times.

Marki3 Wrote:Just finished a 60 mile round trip today with 25 miles remaining in battery charge of my BEV. Whole trip in comfort mode. Went from Salt Lake City to Park City. 3000 ft elevation gain, highway speeds at 68-70 mph. The trip up was 24 miles and range dropped from 85 to 40 so used equivalent of 45 miles to climb the 24 miles up to Park City. But then on the trip back down I started with 40 miles and finished with 42 miles. Did some other running around and arrived back home at 60 miles for the trip. It was 93 degrees and I ran AC at 76 the whole trip.

So, I only have 3 long trips thus far and it seems pretty solid for 85 miles. I am sure winter driving range will be a bit less but not by much. There should be much less penalty for winter driving in electric car compared to ICE. Just as easy to heat from 40 to 75 as it is to cool from 90 to 75 in the heat pump equipped BEV and no penalty for warming up the motor. Probably some penalty for heating the battery pack mitigated by pre-conditioning before leaving home.

foamposite1 Wrote:My work commute is about 60 miles round trip from Irvine to Cypress, CA. My average battery usage is 1/3 battery charge to work. 1/3 to get home. I have remaining 1/3 battery charge left when I arrive home. I estimate my full battery range is 90 miles per full charge. I mainly drive in eco mode with AC on. My commute is about 80% freeway and 20% local driving. I try to drive 75 mph when possible on freeway. I have a level 2 charger at home and I do not charge at work. I am happy with not having REX. I never drive in Eco+ mode., not willing to drive without AC in California heat.

Considering the car would be garaged and pre-heated during the winter, our 80 mile commute... well at least there's hope. But maybe not after a few years if battery capacity is falling off.

one of the few reviews where the i3 is actually being driven fast

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDrWL0d1img

Seems to look right at home

OTOH, shouldn't be too hard to get away from one if you have a few gallons of gas left:

Re: BMW i3/i8 or other electric motor vehicles - BLINGMW - 10-21-2014

Got an email from BMW the other day offering extended test drives (a day or two) of the i3.

No dealership within hundreds of miles is offering this. :finger:

Re: BMW i3/i8 or other electric motor vehicles - PDenbigh - 10-24-2014

Was just looking around, and Ford has a couple of interesting programs out on the Focus electric. For the 2014s, $6k discount. For a 2015, I built one online and it had $10.5k off, putting it at $19,800ish. What I can't tell is if that $10.5k includes or excludes the federal $7,500. It'd almost be too good to be true if it didn't include that already.

However I know the $6k on '14s doesn't include any tax incentives, so potentially a lot of savings there. I am going to look into this a bit more, but I thought it'd interest Chan so I am reporting early findings here.

Re: BMW i3/i8 or other electric motor vehicles - BLINGMW - 10-27-2014

I too was tempted by the Electric Focus deals and investigated a bit maybe 2 mo ago. The two main problems I found:
1) No dealer in VA or NC had one to look at
2) Let alone one actually for sale

So yeah, tell me if that's changed!

Re: BMW i3/i8 or other electric motor vehicles - D_Eclipse9916 - 10-27-2014

Soo went to Katie's cars and coffee on saturday and there were two I8s. Basically in person look like "futuristic" 6 series. I really wasn't as enthralled with them as I was in pictures. A big "meh", but I haven't driven one.

Re: BMW i3/i8 or other electric motor vehicles - SlimKlim - 10-27-2014

The i8 looks like it's birthing a 911.

You can't unsee it now.

Thought that was old news..jalopnik was talking about it like a year ago

Re: BMW i3/i8 or other electric motor vehicles - BLINGMW - 11-10-2014

BMW of c'ville came through and should have an i3 available for extended test drive wednesday!
I'll post a review from wherever I'm stranded between there and Roanoke.
