No nook for you.

And I'm probably not going to be there on Saturday - assuming Captain Dipshit gets his shit together and buys our car...

Hey all. Can we get an idea of how many people may be headed out this way on Sunday? Looking forward to seeing anyone who can make it.

*Edit... too much champagne and too late... weeeeeee!

And a good time was had by all. Thanks to Maeng for being the only MM-er brave enough to help me work on the Z. Got all the spark plugs changed, broke a coil-pack connector (but still good enough I hope), changed fuel filter, drained the oil and replaced filter (no new oil until finished with the rest of it), got the radiator out and most of the accessory belts and pulleys off. Unfortunately, the stopping point was the crank pulley - the puller I have is too big, I'd have to remove the AC condenser to get enough clearance. It's all good though, we'll be continuing tommorrow evening around 6pm.

PS - And yes, I am beginning to hate this car

- JohnC - 10-06-2004

Well, it's been a long week, but things are looking up. I got the timing belt and cam gears off last night and hopefully didn't damage any of the driver's side intake valves ::crosses fingers:: The Nissan manual is typically vague ("Step 1: Remove engine"), so I've been following a tech article put together by a longtime Z enthusiast and mechanic. It's gone fairly well so far - most of the issues I've hit have been my fault - not having the right tools, or getting ahead of myself in taking out bolts. Actually, scratch that - all problems are hereby blamed on Maeng Wink Anyhoo, here's a progress report:

Other things that have been accomplished:

Tranny fluid changed w/ Redline MT-90
Fuel filter changed
Spark plugs changed
Oil drained
Oil filter changed
Timing belt removed
Necessary accessory pulleys removed
Fan + shroud removed
Radiator removed
Intake hoses removed

Things left to do (to get running again):

Remove/replace cam seals
Remove/replace crank seal
New timing belt
Remove/replace idler pulley studs
New idler pulleys
Re-attach accessory pulleys
New water pump
New water hoses
Refill oil w/ Mobil 1 10w/30
New radiator
Refill cooling system including Redline Water Wetter

I'm stuck at the moment on removing the idler pulley studs - they're in there pretty good and of course being studs they don't have a bolt head to wrench on. I'm stopping by Sears (yet again - 3rd trip this week) to get a stud remover tool - hopefully that'll take 'em right off. I can do all of the seals without worrying about this stuff, but I can't put the new t-belt on until I get those studs replaced - they're probably the original pieces, and I want to play it safe and replace them now before one breaks and the timing belt slips and causes Mr. Piston to meet Mr. Valve.

What would be nice to do:

New intake hoses
Replace steering rack bushing with Energy Suspension poly bushings
Remove/replace oil cooler (got a smokin' deal on a 4-row cooler in great shape)
Bleed brakes w/ ATE Super Blue
Bleed power steering w/ Redline PS Fluid
Change diff fluid w/ Redline 75W/90

I've got the parts for everything on this list - my goal is to be drivable by Sunday morning so I can come show it off at G-Force. We'll see.

Made a nice discovery Monday evening -car has new rotors on the front and almost new pads all around, not sure of the brand but at least it's not a pressing issue. The front calipers are going to need a rebuild eventually - maybe even new pistons, but they'll work for now.

SO THE POINT IS... Anybody who wants to is welcome to drop by this Saturday to (hopefully) help me start putting things back together Smile Much beer

John - just double-nut the studs to get them off. Dont need no fancy tools Wink

Tried that yesterday, studs wouldn't budge - Sears had a kit that hammers onto the end of the stud - looks promising Smile

As opposed to stolen? Wink (Don't worry, I realize that rednecks can't spell - I'm losing that ability myself, living way out here in the boondocks)

A big 399th post FUCK YOU to the asshole who never changed the cam seals. Things are frickin' impossible to remove without scratching everything all to hell, and ending up with little rubber and spring pieces stuck in the end guides... :?

- JohnC - 10-07-2004

And of course, a nice big 400th post preemptive FUCK YOU to the same asshole for probably not ever changing the crank seal either. Jerk.

- .RJ - 10-07-2004

Yeah!

Yeah!

*waits for "tech 300z, drunk again" post*

so how averse would you be to using empty coors light cans as intake hoses? i'm sure those things can hold high psi levels and it would go with our ghetto fabbing theme

- JohnC - 10-08-2004

Valve covers are coming off tommorrow to get at the dry-rotted cam seals... Anybody interested?
