When it comes to old BMWs how well it has been maintained is far, far more important than how many miles it has on it. I have seen clean-looking, running/driving cars needing no significant repairs being sold with 290k+ miles on them.

However, certain components on the things just do not last. So you could end up in a car with 90k miles on it that still has the original radiator or water pump and end up with a headgasket seep.

Lower is definitely better, no arguments there, but the maintenance is what you really want to look at. I'd rather buy a car with 160k that has been lovingly owned and maintained than one with 110k that someone is dumping because they don't want to deal with it. Ideally you'll find one that's both, which should be doable if you're patient enough, you're in the the right price range to pick up a pretty clean car.

I'll ask around up here and see if anyone has one for sale, I swear someone buys one every two weeks.

Yeah, let me know. I'm not in a hurry to buy anything by any means, I just want to get one before snowboard season.

Apparently there were only 4,574 Manual M3 sedans (all years combined) imported to North America, so they are fairly uncommon. Combine that with the fact that I really only want two colors (black and estoril) and that I need fold down seats, one like I'm looking for becomes pretty rare.

Going to check this one out hopefully sometime this week. All stock minus the headlights and seems to have been taken care of well with all oem parts. Still going to need to do some of the cooling system pieces that he hasn't done. According to him the suspension should be in good shape other than the control arm bushings needing to be replaced at some point.

Guess I'll see how clean it is when I go to check it out.

Interior looks clean!

Re: E36 Experts, whats this worth? - RawrImAMonster - 10-14-2013

Sold already damnit. It was only for sale for a day.

Re: E36 Experts, whats this worth? - Sully - 10-15-2013

Everything else looked right but that steering wheel seemed "off". I guess the roundel could have fallen off but did the 4 spoke really Not have M badges. My 3 spoke had one.

If you see a car that's a deal you need to be ready to buy the car immediately... "Later this week" is gonna leave you high and dry.

I think all of the 4 spoke steering wheels are like that.

I was, I told him in the first email I wanted to schedule a time to come see it. Guess someone else was just closer.

That was a good deal for someone. Not surprised it was gone in a day.

The 4-spoke M wheels never had a colored roundel. The 4-spoke non-M wheels got a colored roundel in 1995.

Re: E36 Experts, whats this worth? - Sully - 10-15-2013

Mine had a roundel that the previous owner glued on but I was talking more about the small M badge that was at the bottom of mine.

The 4 spoke didn't have the little M badge either, just the black roundel in the middle. I hate 'em.

Re: E36 Experts, whats this worth? - RawrImAMonster - 10-15-2013

Yeah, the 4 spoke steering wheels look a little odd.

My next prospect: http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/ ... 30852.html

Decided I could live with silver since it would be a daily driver anyway. The evo's black paint drove me nuts trying to keep it clean and now I'm spoiled by the trans am's orange paint where you can barely see any dirt unless it literally has mud caked on it.

Apparently this guy has all of the maintenance records for the last 8 years that he has owned it. I'm waiting on him to respond about what all cooling system and suspension pieces have been replaced. Has everything except heated seats and it's all stock except the head unit.

Re: E36 Experts, whats this worth? - SlimKlim - 10-15-2013

Looks very clean, you don't see many sets of black vaders still in that condition.

Silver will definitely be easier to maintain than black, and it still looks pretty nice when its all waxed up. The thing I like about the more muted colors is you can get away with more aggressive cosmetic mods and its not overwhelming. A black grill, frenched fogs or high beams, LTW splitters and/or LTW flag would look sweet.

A bunch of us are up in the NOVA area, if you need help with logistics just let me know.

Going to check out the silver one tomorrow. Getting one of my grandparents to ride up with me so I should be good as far as getting it back if I need to.

How bad is the traffic going to be in falls church around 5:30?

Great. It's right off 66 just off leesburg pike so hopefully its not too horrible. I think its less than a mile once you get off the interstate.

That sucks. It might get pushed back to this weekend if it's raining anyways. I've been to enough car auctions to know you never buy a car when it's wet. Rain hides paint flaws very well.
