Most likely when I have a family/kids, ill be downsizing the racing, and the ability to have a fun car that can fit the kids, a car that the wife wants (most ex-gfs loved smaller suvs), and be able to tow an open trailer with a race car has a huge appeal.

Blasphemy. Full racing rig > Kids/family.

When it means I can fool my potential future wife into driving the tow vehicle while I get to drive a vette/viper/cock extension instead of an suv daily, then I will.

I love the "Sport" SUVs, hell I love SUVs in general. Only "Sport" SUVs I would really own though would be a Cayenne or a Range Rover Sport SUPAHCHARGED.

Re: Sport SUV's, Love Em or Hate Em? - Ken - 02-21-2013

Some of these are realllllyyy nearing lifted wagon anyway, the X1 for example. For some reason though, i REALLY want one.

Re: Sport SUV's, Love Em or Hate Em? - Jake - 02-21-2013

On principle, I hate "faux" SUVs that aren't designed to go anywhere but mall parking lots. If it's gonna have the ground clearance, give it a decent AWD/4x4 system. My (first-gen) Escape was actually pretty good off-road, and had some towing ability. The new Escape? Nooope. What will you tow with a turbo 1.6, a Miata bumper?

I'd rather have an M5 wagon than an X5M.

Now, the fancy-pants luxobarge SUVs that have a fuckton of power and can also tow The Sun while rock-crawling with their air suspension set to Max Lift and the terrain system set to Zombie Attack? Bring 'em on. I really like the Touraeg/Q7/Cayenne cousins because they're quick and pretty capable.

You don't have to sacrifice power and creature comforts for utility, but the GMC Terrains and BMW X1s and Nissan Rogues of the world shouldn't exist. Bring back the damn wagon.

Like, seriously. How does ANYONE drive a Rogue with that little 4-cylinder hooked up to a CVT that drones on and on as it wheezes up to 55 mph and think, "yes, this is good, I would like to buy one of these" and then ACTUALLY BUY IT.

It's the same with the Caliber. Dodge sold them to lots of humans, not just rental car agencies. And people actually like owning them. Speaking from experience, they're Bad.

 My mother-in-law has one, seems like well put together vehicle, but I've never driven it. I would have to agree with the wagon comment though, a Rogue or CRV really should just be a wagon. :dunno: But hey, most SUVs should be minivans. I guess many Americans just don't like driving vehicles that meet their actual needs.

Along that point G, if a van is more useful, can both tow and/or have a bike inside and/or sleeping, gear space.... seems like the right choice. I still don't get your parking arguement. A van fits in a regular space, especially a 3/4ths van like a GMC Safari.

FWIW I don't have anything against "sport" SUVs if you have lots of money to burn.

Ever see a crash test video for one of those? They have the structural integrity of a Pringles can.

These two statements x eleventiybillion.

I love me some TDI Touraeg. I told the GF I wanted one and she asked when I was buying it. Apparently they're popular? :dunno:

I don't know why anyone would buy something like a Cherokee SRT8. It makes no sense to me. It's like you can't make up your damn mind between a sports car and a practical daily so you get something that can't do either very well. Same thing with all these dang FWD SUVS with micro engines and 0 offroad capability. Either get yourself a camry because you're just going to daily it, or buy yourself something offroad capable because you actually will get offroad.

I have pondered this exact conundrum many times. It could be a good tow vehicle but they nipped that in the bud with those stupid center exhaust tips. Without a tow hook it has no functionality or purpose. The huge wheels and non-existent ground clearance make it so you couldn't even rock-crawl over a curb, and its so tall and heavy its not gonna accelerate or turn like a car with the same motor. At least the SRT10 Ram could still do truck things.

Re: Sport SUV's, Love Em or Hate Em? - CaptainHenreh - 02-21-2013

You've never driven one, I take it.

I haven't. I'm sure it's fast. But I feel like the whole time I'm driving it that I could have spent the same money on something faster and trackable or something that's capable off road.

The Jeep STR8 Cherokee... its not even close to being a crawler or a mall crawler. Diamler put in the air bag/magnetic set up in there to make them VERY comfortable SUVs with ZERO aftermarket or factory lift support. It is 100% a street rod SUV. and it does it very well. its fast, it brakes well, its comfortable, and it will smoke the tires Smile

the die hard jeep crew would LOVE to make it into a ball'n rock crawler... but its not in the cards. Its literally the Jeep answer to the Porsche, Land Rover V8s, etc.
