WOT pulls anytime.
So the car has done over 2,000 miles at this point.
2 things:
1. The Power steering pump pukes fluid. A little research found out that the stock LS1 power steering pump just sucks and overheats the instant you autocross etc. TurnOne is the way to go apparently. $270 isn't cheap but if I plan to do any more autocrossing or road racing with it I NEED it. Otherwise when I have fun I just have to get used to a little power steering smell when it burps out some fluid on the backroads.
2. The "mail order tune" runs the car "alright". It is pulling timing because it is a 98 ecu so it is way too sensitive on it's pullback of timing based on intake air temperatures. I just did the mai lorder till I wanted to get the car running alright, then get it tuned. However I am worried about being disappointed by straight line speed. There are 3 scenarios, any of them I need a tune so I am not inputting that into each one:
A. Keep it the way it is. Get it tuned, it is just a bit faster than a c5 z06. $0
B. Install FAST 102 I have for it, plus buy throttle body, fuel rails and new injectors. This gets me another 20-30rwhp, and is basically it for bolt ons. Cost $800
C. Install heads, and above Fast 102 setup. And aside from replacing the entire motor, know that I won't get any more horsepower out of the motor till forced induction or built motor. By far a lot more expensive, but should have me being able to edge out C6 Z06s for less than 2/3 the cost of a C6 z06 in a nice sedan chassis. (assuming C6 Z06 is 30k and my build creeps nearer to 15-20k). $2400 total cost including FAST.
A tune is $500 and I will NOT touch the car, more likely to sell than get it tuned again. I Am leaning towards B, but if I dont get C done and I make less horsepower than I will always wonder what if? Also on the search for an entire black interior.

Option B, because more horsepower at the expense of someone else's money is always the best idea
And $2400 goes a long way to whatever you replace #186 with, so... middle-ground option wins out IMO.

also B. see what the power gets you and it'll give you some wiggle room to beef up anything else in the car and/or make it nicer in other areas once you experience how it handles that kind of speed. plus, tire money

I say option B too, would you have to pay full price to update the tune if you added headers later?
I'm down to help you swap interiors when you get your hands on a black one. I know how to make everything not rattle.

Sounds like I will do option B. I do have to pay almost full price for the tune if I add Heads later (not headers, already got those :wink: ) With the wedding coming up in August and buying a new trailer, I just don't think I can justify spending that money into it currently.

Being between c5 and c6 Z06's doesn't sound like a bad place to be. :wink:
When you say it runs alright, is it random...like just once in awhile it pulls timing? And is that really just based on intake temps, no knock sensors or anything?

Flim Flam's guy is actually my tuner. Plan is to order all the stuff, and go back down there for that guy to tune it. So yes, we will have to do that plan. Unfortunately I am getting slammed at work and they just put the Ex-nay on any PTO from November 18th-January 5th. So I gotta either get everything together quick or just wait till January/February timeframe.

Ka-Boom!
On really cold mornings I was starting to hear what I thought was a small bit of piston slap. It is a small-block Chevy so I didn't investigate further. I was at Summit Point Main this past saturday and took the car on track. This was now its 2nd track event. I know I know, I wasn't supposed to track this one. Well coming around 6 all the sudden I heard through my helmet bad knocking sounds so I pulled offline and hand out the window to go in. Didn't quite make it around 9 when I heard a loud POP and there goes the motor. 2 things:
1. The LS series are known for oil starvation issues, but I did have an improved racing oil pan baffle, so I am thinking it is not that...at least initially.
2. The LS1 is known for weak rod bolts, I think the 2 track events had their toll on it. I was going to replace them, but said "I won't track this thing", so I didn't replace them. :/
Sucks, but that's the way it goes. I have some clean up on the race car this week, and then hopefully get it out of the garage. Plop the LS1/M3 on the lift, pull the motor/trans and plop in a new motor before the new race car arrives. We shall see, work has been busy lately, but with race season over, I am starting to find free weekends here and there.

I don't spend a lot of time at the track (or reading corvette forums anymore) so I'm a little surprised to hear about the oiling issues. I heard it about LS2's or 3's with slicks, but for the most part thought LS1's / LS6's were pretty reliable in that respect, up to a point of course. I did hear about the rod bolts, also decided not to do them for the same reason.
Good luck with the rebuild, should be a ton easier with the lift!

If your attitude is half as pleasant about this in real life as it comes across in the post, kudos to accepting the downside of this hobby so well!
Granted I don't know much about LSx's, but I thought they were damn near bulletproof. Bummer, but good luck with the rebuild! New motor has to be at least a 6.0 because it's in the thread title.

:twisted: Maybe, I got to see how expensive it is to build up a 6.0.
Unfortunately racing has made me very aware of the possibilities of blowing up, crashing etc on track. It's a $1,600 calamity but what are you going to do? I tend to prefer not to waste anguish about things we cannot control.
I also found I was a bit "bored" driving in HPDE in a street car. I certainly won't be tracking this car again, mostly because HPDE is boring without a goal. I have been ruined by racing. If I was out with a bunch of friends it would be fun.
Edit: I also have thought about selling the car. It's fun, tough, fast; but want to try something other than an e36. I will be finishing up the a/c when the engine is out and cleaning up a few items and then posting it up for sale if anyone was interested in the 16-18k range as it sits.

:lol: I legit did two laps with Jess' dad in the passenger seat and got bored. I was about to pit in next lap when I saw you and it made it fun for a lap. But again, street cars aren't equal, I don't think your 128i had much chance against the LS1. If we were in identically prepped 128is (or shit LS1/M3s) it would have been fun. Jess' dad appreciated the :finger: you gave till I just put down the throttle pedal and passed anyway. HPDE 4 is open passing right??

Ha, yeah, I don't think it had much of a fighting chance. I saw you coming (I had Tom, the new grid guy, in the car and said "OK, here comes my roommate, get ready") and am pretty sure I had the car giving all it had. I was worried about losing it ever-so-slightly and killing my momentum. Regardless, you had a ton of power on me (and let's be real, maybe a bit of skill
) so I knew you'd pass, it was just a question of when...And yep, HPDE 4 is open passing with point-bys recommended but not required.
