my writeup on comp school,
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.2kgt.com/item.php?itemid=145">http://www.2kgt.com/item.php?itemid=145</a><!-- m -->

Friday was the SuperComp School. The day was to be filled with five classroom sessions, four 40-minute track sessions and one written test. In our first classroom session we went over the purpose of the school and what our first exercise would be. For our first on track session we would get a few warm up laps because for many of us it was our first time on track this year. After the warm up session we would all line up 2 by 2 as we were and practice a rolling start and a few laps of mock racing conditions. Our class had about 35 students out on track for the start and several instructors (veteran race car drivers) that would be evaluating our performance. Some of those veteran drivers got a jump on the rest of us and one of them managed to bump into a friend of mine that was taking the Comp School giving him a nice new tire donut and doing a little weight reduction by removing his mirror. Both drivers talked after the session and classified it as a ÔÇÿracing incidentÔÇÖ and seem ok with it.

After our first session we were back in class going over how things went and what we felt was different in ÔÇÿracingÔÇÖ from HPDE. We also had a panel of three veteran drivers in the class providing input to various questions our head instructor, Dan Unkefer, asked them. For our second on track exercise we would perform track right and track left switching half way through the session from a signal from start/finish. In this exercise we were to divide the track in half and only use that half. This doesnÔÇÖt mean follow the edge of the track but rather only use half of it. Most tracks are 40ÔÇÖ wide so we were allowed 20ÔÇÖ of track to use. During this drill you learn just how much (or little) grip is in parts of the track you may have never used before.

Once the track left/right drill was over we were back in class getting some more tips from Dan and his panel of racers. For our third exercise we would be paired up with another student or instructor for half-track drills and leap froging. I was paired with a seasoned CMC mustang driver. Half-track drills consist of one driver track left, the other driver track right and driving the entire course side by side, then switching mid way through. This was a blast. The goal was to simulate racing conditions when fighting for position. Mid way through the session we switched from half tracking to leap froging. Leap froging is when we took turns passing each other in specific turns. At VIR these were 1, 4, 7, 11 and 14.

After our third session we were back in class where we went over what we learned in the drills and then we went over the different types of starts, standing, rolling double file and rolling single file (restart). For our fourth session we would begin with a standing start, race for a few laps then do a rolling start and finish out the session with another mock race that would last until the end of the session.

For the fourth session we lined up at the covered grid at the top of the hill at VIR, just like in a real race. They then released us and we were to pair up two by two for a standing start. We got 1 warm up lap and then we lined up on the front straight for the standing start. When you wonder what a standing start is think drag racing with another car beside you, and if you are in the middle of the pack about 15 cars in front and another 15 cars behind you spread out about a car length apart, on a track that is 40ÔÇÖ wide. Instead of having a Christmas tree you have a flagger at the start/finish tower (which you may or may not be able to see, this is why a radio is important) he slowly raises a yellow flag and then once it is raised drops it and flies a green flag. At this point everyone is revved to around 4k RPMs and then clutch dumps in true drag race fashion. It is then a pure out street race to turn 1, sometimes 3 or 4 wide. It was the most fun I have ever had on a racetrack! We completed several laps and then we were suppose to be given a signal to reline up as we were for a rolling start, two by two. The signal chosen was a red flag followed by a black flag. Anyone that has been on a racetrack knows that a red flag means to STOP on the side of the track and a black flag means to come into the pits. Well this was not communicated with race control, so when a bunch of cars didnÔÇÖt stop for the red flag they were not amused. We were all pulled into the pits and had to wait for it to be sorted out. Once they got it all sorted we were back on track for a warm up lap and our rolling start. Once the rolling start began it started our last and final mock race for the day. I got a few green laps in then came in early due to a loose feeling steering wheel. One of my pinch bolts on the steering shaft had worked its way loose and was giving some slop in the wheel. I could have completed the session once I figured out what the problem was but I did not want to take the chance of going into turn 1 or 14 at 120ish MPH and not being able to turn in! After I pitted there was apparently some contact with a miata and another car that resulted in some parts being strewn across the track just past oak tree, probably a good thing I wasnÔÇÖt out there anyway.

After our fourth session we were back in class for our written test and final words from the instructor. Once we were done with the test we could leave and come back later in the evening to find out if we passed. About an hour later we all filed back into the classroom as was given word if we passed or not. Most everyone passed except a few people.

My thoughts on the SuperComp school is once you come up through the NASA HPDE program you are very well prepared for this racing school. One of the biggest things I learned during the school is there is no longer a ÔÇÿlineÔÇÖ. All you have is the ÔÇÿracing lineÔÇÖ and that is wherever another competitor isnÔÇÖt.. Your fastest way around the track becomes getting around other cars, and you donÔÇÖt need a point by to do it. This also requires a whole new level of awareness. You have to constantly scan your environment. Your eyes may only spend 50% of the time looking at what is in front of you. The rest of the time is spent looking behind, both sides, below, up (weather) and at your gauges. If you donÔÇÖt do this you will get run over or your will run over someone else, and nobody wants that. If you ever think you might want to go racing, take the SuperComp school, it will prepare you for whatÔÇÖs ahead.

Both Rgay and Chad passed their comp school (although Chad did miss one question on his written test). Neither RJ or Chad raced today.

I'm still looking for where in the CCR one could find that answer. Best I could get all weekend is, 'it's an unwritten rule' so only people who have worked corners would know the correct answer, but whatever. We still passed and missed the 1 question that apparently it was ok to miss. We didn't even _have_ to sit in a bucket.
What was the question?

I sent you a PM so we don't post the NASA test all over the interweb Wink
actually I found the answer under another flag's description, dammit.

Sorry man, you only missed one though, you passed, and don't have to go sit out in a bucket.

pm me the question please.

no, you are going to have to take CompSchool so you can answer it for yourself :lol:

I want the question too, since I'm a corner worker. I wanna see if I can answer it. Smile
