RE: You're My Boy, Blue - ScottyB - 02-28-2020

well this thread's been dead for a while. not much to report, just gas and go at 106k miles. i still really look for excuses to drive it.

i picked up a set of stupidly cheap, Czek-make snow tires after Christmas from a local serviceman that had them on his focus at a German army base and they came with when he shipped back. they're old, but the tread's good and aggressive and is studdable which means the tread blocks will stand up to more abuse than typical unstudded winters.

i'm not even sure if i'll bother getting them balanced. i have no plans to ever drive them on pavement. they'll be going on my 16" wheels...and getting thrashed to rally destruction with no ragrets this year.

lots of little projects that are coming up, both maintenance and upgrades:
• finally got some plastic clips to properly secure the fender liner back to the fender on the front
• the original accessory drive belt (aka the only belt) is ready for retirement. still looks great though, i feel kinda bad tossing it but its cheap insurance.
• developed the classic 8th gen civic "wiper freakout" where water is able to get into the wiper motor gearbox case cover and screw with one of the electrical connections. result: the wipers turn on, or off, or go full speed, or do whatever they want really. its embarrassing and not very helpful. Honda corrected this goof with a new $10 gearbox case cover, and of course its under the cowl so that comes off again....sigh.
• itching to get the SPC adjustable rear upper control arms on. since i'm gonna have to get an alignment anyway, i should probably also replace the front strut tops "while i'm in there". they were new Moog units i put on when i installed the struts/springs and they're already crunching and popping. Moog has been letting me down more and more lately. back to OEM Honda parts for that.
• the Hankooks are on their last legs. i never really cared for the stock wheels, so i'm hoping if funds allow this year, to upgrade to some 17x8's with fresh tires and sell the stocks with whatever rubber's left on them.

still shines up OK from 10 feet. got a detail job a couple weeks ago in prep for our annual pollen tree-bukake air quality disaster.

I've never liked anything moog I've installed.

they used to be a gold standard but more recently (10 yrs i guess?) its gone heavily offshore and the quality has followed.  i still like their "problem solver" lineup...they take an OE design and try to engineer it for greater durability.  the MOOG balljoints i put on my xterra were like that, the MOOG unit was huge compared to OEM and had a grease zerk.  but a lot of their stuff is cost cutter made in Gina now.  i think my perception has finally started to turn on them...just not worth it anymore.

thanks Jayray.  i never get tired of it.

RE: You're My Boy, Blue - ScottyB - 07-24-2020

time to put proper tires on this thing, and if i'm doing that i'm taking these ugly stock boat anchor wheels and sending them down the road to facespace marketplace.

got it narrowed down to a couple wheels from Konig and Enkei (like the price point, strength, looks).  i keep thinking i can pull of gold or bronze on a daily but not sure.  really feeling the Freeform and Ampliform but i kinda like all of them.  what say you?  shitty photoshops so just ignore the magic wandering calipers.

played around with the idea of doing a 9"/8" front stagger but that seems like a huge stupid waste on a car that mostly goes to the grocery store and does road trips.  but i'd get so many sweet track inspired build points.

Gold

You're My Boy, Blue - Sijray21 - 07-26-2020

I'm a fan of the ampliforms in that bronze. Mmm.

Also, I would stick to a square setup. Easier for everyday life and tire rotations.

RE: You're My Boy, Blue - Evan - 07-26-2020

Im a big fan of Ampliforms, and they would look tits in bronze on your car. Thats exactly what would be on my BRZ right now if they fit over the brakes.

i feel this.  my whole life i've wanted blue w/gold or bronze wheels, and even had a subaru at one point and still couldn't pull it off.  i like silver, it looks classy and all but that gold/bronze.....just look at it.

the sensible adult in me says that's what's appropriate for wear, overall expenses, and not weighing the car down with unnecessary rotational mass and drag.

the YOLO idiot in me thinks it would be super cool and so much fun because 9" wide tires and stuff.  i'm hoping its a phase.

i think its really down to the Amps or Dekagrams. agreed on many tits. strong, light and the price is right. amazed they don't fit over your brakes considering the big, flat face of the wheel but those are some pretty absurd caliper sizes.

RE: You're My Boy, Blue - Tyler.M - 07-29-2020

Ampliforms too, but I think the red caliper in the mock-up is shading my perspective a bit. The other pics don't have the red caliper.

yeah i just literally ripped the whole wheel/tire/brake right off someone's car and pasted it on mine.  calipers will be stock dirty stuff.

RE: You're My Boy, Blue - ScottyB - 09-18-2020

had a TREAT YO SELF moment last night.

ampliforms inbound.  17x8, bronze.

planning to wrap them with 280-340TW tire that has good rain traction and isn't a droning hairy animal on the highway.  i'll take snappy response over peak grip.  so far the General G-MAX looks very promising, especially for the price.   also have my eye on the Conti ExtremeContacts and Advan Fleva 701s, although the Contis are said to have a sloppy sidewall and the Flevas give up rain grip.  not willing to spend PS4S money and they'd go to waste on the roads i drive 95% of the time anyway.  Indy500's look promising but they seem to also have weak rain grip and people seem really divided on them.  i put about 6-8k miles a year on it.  any suggestions in a 225/45-17?

RE: You're My Boy, Blue - Evan - 09-18-2020

Conti ECS.
Ive never heard anything about a sloppy sidewall. Plenty of track rats use them for their rain tires.

You're My Boy, Blue - Sijray21 - 09-18-2020

I had the G-Max tires on the z3 in fatty stock sizes and they're OK. For the same price (or a little more) I'd go with the Conti ECS tires as well.

I have the EC DWS06 tires and they're pretty good on grip/comfort/etc. It seems the ECSs are even better for grip.

yeah, poor wording on my part.  soft, maybe not sloppy...and even then so many people like them that i'm happy to hear it sounds overblown.  i've followed a few people that even took them on 1LapOfAmerica stuff and that seems like a hell of a torture test.

k i'm sold. gonna see if i can wait for Conti to run a promo on them like they seem to every fall/spring.

You're My Boy, Blue - D_Eclipse9916 - 09-21-2020

They are soft/sloppy sidewall. I wouldn’t say they are the best feeling tires but they are a really good tire. You may not even notice; or be glad they are when you drive on the street.

RE: You're My Boy, Blue - ScottyB - 09-25-2020

FedEx, you ignorant slut.

"signature required" they don't even ring my doorbell.
its raining, my nice covered porch is about 10 feet from my garage door.  where do they put them?  in the rain, stacked in the driveway.  COULD YOU NOT?

anyway, thankfully nothing scratched or dinged, had to try a little mockup

i think paired with a 225/45 Conti ExtremeContact this will be a really fun daily setup.

threw them on a scale and almost exactly 17.75lbs with the center cap.  really pleased with that given the 700kg load rating at that price.
