Re: Project: Integra Type Dickbutt - Kaan - 06-11-2015

Back at it with Scott in the passenger seat giving me guidance... He seemed to enjoy the trips through turn 10.

Still too much paint showing in turn 9 according to Brian and Navins conversation on the face books.

overall a great weekend. eventually I'd like to move up to a stickier tire.... but I'm too cheap right now.

That's one sexy integra

Nice video, Ryan. Too bad that dude in that red car (was that a Pinto?) ruined it. Really ugly and slow, that red car.

Re: Project: Integra Type Dickbutt - Kaan - 06-16-2015

When is it the right time to move up in HPDE1? When should you strap on a set of Rcomps? These are the things I’ve been debating lately. (Insert Navins comment on # of track days and Rcomps)

I don’t think it’s a confidence thing. My old age hasn’t killed my feel and reflexes in the car too much…I’m very comfortable in my car… I’ve touched every bolt on it (I trust it)… It’s currently very easy to drive and change trajectory… But I’m not “faster” than most of the guys in HPDE1 (Insert Navins comment on “must” win HPDE)… at I’m mid pack and maybe in the to 50%, faster in some areas and slower in others. I don’t drive in my mirrors but I’m very comfortable looking around and taking it whats around me, whats coming up, whats coming behind me, etc (head on swivel motorcycle riding helps).

After the 1st of 4 sessions on Sunday I get soloed. I questioned my instructor… then we came to the realization that he thought I only had 2 more sessions left for the day. I asked to go solo for session 2, get a sanity check (him back in the seat) for session 3, and back to solo for session 4… All went well, the car isn’t bent, etc.

Is two weekends at Summit enough to move up to HPDE2? Is HPDE2 just a faster HPDE2? Less pain train more open track? 75% of the goals in the book for HPDE2, my instructor says I’m knocking out of the park already… Is there some NASA officials bias? (insert historical BS about nasa officials moving up quickly in hpdes) My next event “should” be VIR… do I stay in HPDE1 or move up to HPDE2 for VIR? I haven’t been on VIR in a LONG time…

The biggest mental block for me right now is tires. I’m learning alot, I have consistently passed plenty of cars wrapped in RA1s and stuff, but I definitely cant carry speed like the other guys and my car is gutless. I’d just like to carry more and keep up a little… SO I can get my hands on a set of Toyo RRs in 205/50/15 for $200… they have one weekend of work on them. The other option is buying some hot street tire off tire rack for $500+ and running them.

Let me remind you that I’m a cheap ass… so $200 for tires is tempting as hell. But I am also very tempted to burn these street tires to the ground for the rest of the year. The car is officially driven to and from the track (if I have my way and find a deal…I’ll be towing it by the next event) and obviously on track (insert jokes about only being back two events)

Opinions are like assholes… we all have them. What say the overly opinionated Madison Motorsports?

Re: Project: Integra Type Dickbutt - D_Eclipse9916 - 06-16-2015

I kept telling you to go HPDE 2 but I just realized that NASA is now pushing the "no instructors" in HPDE 2 thing. I was always of the opinion that HPDE 2 was the same as HPDE 1 with less traffic. (A good thing). I am not so sure anyone with 2 weekends under their belt shouldn't have an instructor in the right seat. Can you do HPDE 2 and request an instructor?

Re: Project: Integra Type Dickbutt - navin - 06-16-2015

I thought HPDE2 is now offering an option to sign up for Group 2 "Solo"... Don't really agree with it, but hopefully NASA is actually checking to see if people are qualified to be solo rather than just having it as an option.

So I think Kaan will be fine with signing up and being assigned an instructor. At the end of the day you are paying money for instruction, so basically I'd keep that person in the car as long as possible.

Re: Project: Integra Type Dickbutt - navin - 06-16-2015

Oh yeah... buy street tires and burn them down for the rest of the year + possibly next (prob not with re71r). At the end of the day you control your own pace/comfort on the track. I'd say move up to Group 2 and either start in the way back of the group and give yourself space.

You are really over thinking 1 vs. 2 thing IMO...

Kaan Wrote:Less pain train more open track?
That, yes. But keep bringing instructors along, each of them is likely to teach you something new, especially if they have race experience and are willing to push you (those were the most fun folks I remember).

Re: Project: Integra Type Dickbutt - .RJ - 06-16-2015

Keep the instructor and buy *good* street tires - there are lots of options out there. You dont need race tires, and the street tires now are nearly as good as the old school race rubber.

Keep in mind as you get faster with that car you will want to start working on loosening it up, which will be faster but bite you if you get it wrong.

Re: Project: Integra Type Dickbutt - Kaan - 06-16-2015

so the car is pretty loose right now, but very predictable. the plan for the winter is to pull the konis and send them in for a revlave/shortening to take more spring rate "later." right now I'm running 450 front/550 rear, ITR rear bar... it can push a little on entry and loosen up as it goes through the corner (nascar jokes)

Its my understanding that you get an instructor in HPDE2 for a while... then they solo you... then you check ride to 3? something like that happens. I know i'll have an instructor in the car for group 2. I'm definitely in the "keep the instructors" boat. I was the one asking for a sanity check... I will happily take any tips/tricks on track that I can get, while I can get them. I was going to see if DJ wanted to jump in my car with me on the last session to learn some zen bmw BS... but he looked busy packing up lol

I cant make up my mind on tires. cheap RRs, blingy new shit, cook my current tires... my cheap ass will probably just cook my current tires so I can spend more on the trailer.

Re: Project: Integra Type Dickbutt - rherold9 - 06-16-2015

I know I've been saying get tires cause you'd be fast. In reality if there is a lot of tread then keep the street tires until they are done. You'll be able to learn the car better that way. What it will do at a tire limit which is I'd say a good thing.

Just so you don't have to deal with stupid ass people in HPDE1 aka people's first time out in their new STI with all seasons trying to go balls to the walls at VIR. I'd go to HPDE2 just to be with people that are more experienced... VIR will be a pain train of slow for your car (and mine) because we don't have the power, but it's not like you are going to be dangerous to others or anything.

Anyways, maybe if you go it'll convince me to go even if we are in different groups just so I can get to 2 quickly. It's just going to be in the high 90s which will suck.

Re: Project: Integra Type Dickbutt - Kaan - 07-07-2015

So I took the dickbutt out for a romp just to keep the fluids going... and I decided to hit it with the temp gun when I got back from just a little street driving. WELL it was really HOT in the engine bay. The headers are wrapped, I have an all aluminum radiator, my Honda temp gauge says its not running hot... but I decided that everyone else had hood louvers so I should too!

These are made for the Factory Five 818 by zero decibel motorsports... they are the "small" louvers. They are small enough to not cause too much turbulent air and look to be pretty functional from what I have been reading (the "medium" version doesn't seem to be function... leading edges and lips below the plain are missing)

They'll get cut into the hood and mounted something like this... I think... I have to do a lot of measuring and stuff under the hood, then on the hood, etc
