If it gernedes the center diff, then the install wasnt done properly, IMHO. Unless there is something magic about the DSM center diff where if the clearances get out of whack the whole diff explodes

- Dave - 10-30-2006

RJ, it is a DSM. Those things like to blow up, and when they go, it's the A-bomb of failures :-). Just playing DJ :-p

Jeff, it's settled. We all agree that you should drive the car first :-). Pete also made a very good point that you will appreciate the LSD more after you've driven it some. On the opposite side of that, you may find that you can spend the money in better places once you get it running, and push the LSD on the "later" list.

- Jeff - 10-30-2006

I guess it is settled isn't it? I was speaking to rex on the phone just a bit ago and he said he thought that I would be better off living with an open diff and building myself a super 568 tranny to put in it later (Trans from a late model Spirit/Daytona R/T with the 16v motor). So I think that is what I will do. I will however get the moly endplate. I will order that this week sometime. There is still alot of money and time left in the body work, I really need to start on that stuff.

Well I dont know if I have ever heard of someone gerned"ing" a diff
hahaha
That is usually the root of the problem (install not done properly) but a lot of the other reasons. To be honest, I have no idea why they do fall apart and rip apart diffs but they do, and its a huge no-no in the dsm community to use one.

Hell, you don't even have to install a crappy Phantom Grip to make an SHO trans do that Confusedhock: .

- Jeff - 10-31-2006

I found the problem...it should have been obvious all along!

- Jeff - 10-31-2006

FWIW The guy who sells the LSD I was looking at had this to say when asked the question, "How does your unit compare to the phantom grip?"

"Well, aside from the price difference. You have the confidence of knowing that our unit was designed for TDs. Whereas the Phantom Grip is a unit that was design for multiple cars (including Honda). We have successfully tested these units and are very pleased with the way they work.

As well, our kit prevents the hassel of having to lathe gears.

Overall, I have to say, I'm thrilled with this unit in my cars and I think you will be too!"

Just for clarification, his kit comes with new spider gears and a new diff pin. Do his comments change anyones opinion?

- ViPER1313 - 10-31-2006

no

Psssh, I'm ready to put my turbo Ford up against your turbo Dodge any day ;-)

- Jeff - 10-31-2006

Can I start over again and spend your budget? Lets run them in a GRMish type competition once I get it done. I wonder how it would fair against the Merkur in a auto-x and a drag race. I think it would be fun.

- PDenbigh - 10-31-2006

No you can't start over! I only got one chance too ;-) I imagine my budget wasn't much more than yours to be honest, minus the safety equipment. And yes, I'll rumble with you in a GRM-ish competition. You do have the bling valve cover and paint job though, so my concourse points may suffer...

I have gold paint pete.... just say the word.

....Maybe you didnt get that I was poking fun of his spelling of "gerneding".......

- .RJ - 10-31-2006

The trans in my lunchbox failed the same way adam's did. Center pin in the diff backed out and put a hole in the case.

Fixed that for ya

- Jeff - 11-05-2006

YAY FOR ANOTHER WEEKEND KIDDIES!

So, I pulled my old A555 transmission out of storage on friday. I kinda got a little crazy and in about two hours I had the tranny completely tore down. I didn't take the gearset apart, but I removed the guts and took it down to just a case. I brought the case and all the painted steel parts back to H-burg with me. The case is gonna get hot tanked at carquest and the steel parts are getting fresh black paint.

...As I set and look at the diff there on the table...I can't help but wonder if that LSD insert works as well as they say...

PICS TOMORROW!! Sleep...and Sylvia...now

- Jeff - 02-28-2007

Well, I suppose that I need to update this thread. The Daytona has largely spent the winter hibernating and frankly I feel rather guilty. The transmission (I will post pics tonight...its cool to look at) is all apart and I am trying to get the proper intermediate shaft bearing in my hand. Once I get that a mechanic (who just quit...I will have to see how this works out) is going to help me put it back together and get it ready to go in the car. Once that happens...I guess it goes back together! Gonna try to get that bearing over spring break and give this guy a call. Once the drivetrain is in and running I will begin the final stages and get the car in to paint.

A few random pictures from the transmission tare down have surfaced.

The only bling...

much thicker...thats what she said...

And the blingy OEM diff pin plates. These are a part Chrysler requires to be installed during a rebuild of any automatic transmission made during this era. It prevents the diff pin from coming out under heavy use...or in my case...the 1 tire fire.

The daytona is an automatic?
