That is a beautiful car. I see elements of the LFA in the rear, some McLaren in the front, and maybe some Ferrari/Pinnifarina P4/5. Don't love the wheels but I wouldn't kick it out of bed over those.

RE: Automotive News Discussion - Goodspeed - 07-17-2019

I'm pretty excited for the forthcoming GR Super Sports from Toyota.  Yeah it's another hypercar forged from unobtanium but at least it's something new and pretty damn wild from...not one of the usual suspects (kinda like that Lotus up there)

https://www.evo.co.uk/toyota/20522/986bhp-toyota-gr-super-sports-hybrid-hypercar-teased-in-new-video

We've only seen glimpses of something like this from Japan in the past - the two Toyota GT-One road cars, a single Nissan R390 road car, the three Yamaha OX99-11 prototypes.  The LFA was the only supercar that wasn't almost totally vaporware.  About time we see a Japanese manufacturer really go for it.

On a side note: as a longtime Toyota watcher I have literally no idea where the hell the name/outfit Gazoo Racing came from, and it's the stupidest nameplate I've ever heard. TRD, Toyota Technocraft, Toyota Motorsport - all in the Toyota family - why not one of those? Gazoo Racing? Who in marketing let that slip by?

RE: Automotive News Discussion - .RJ - 07-18-2019

VW kills the alltrack and sportwagen. Sads.

Ask and you shall receive:

Quote:I’ve often wondered what ‘Gazoo’ means, and so when the opportunity arose to interview Toyota’s motorsport boss Koei Saga, I saved it for my very last question in the interview.

He laughed, and admitted that he had to refer to a pre-prepared answer, because the explanation might lose a little in translation from Japanese to English.
“The very origin is a Japanese word, ‘gazo’, which means ‘picture’ or ‘image’,” he told me. “Almost 20 years ago our president wanted to change the structure of our company and he introduced what at the time was a very new online system using images of cars for the reselling of used cars.
They called this internet site gazoo.com, using the English spelling of the word.”

Although the use of imagery on website is commonplace today, it was a radical step for the Japanese motor industry in the mid-1990s, when internet technology was in its infancy.

Chevy did what Ford absolutely failed to do with the GT.

It looks like a Corvette, but tech out the wazoo, and where else can you find a v8 mid engine car for 60k? It's this or...buy a used Espirit?

I approve 100%

That price though. Everyone and their mom is going to have one. Mr. Deeds style.

I really like the cockpit setup with the dual screens. Not feeling the exterior that much. The front end is just weird and they went straight Camaro on the rear. Hopefully it looks better in person.

RE: Automotive News Discussion - RawrImAMonster - 07-19-2019

I love it. I really wasn't expecting to like it at all based on the spy photos but damn they killed it. It's a ~500hp mid-engined v8 in a 3300 lb package for less than 60k. I can't believe they kept it that cheap. Is there anything in that price range that can even sort of compete with that?

RE: Automotive News Discussion - Steve85 - 07-19-2019

I love it. Not perfect, of course, they still seem to give up when they get to the back and I think the front needed to be somewhat C7ish to continue the "looks like a corvette". I watched the reveal and I need more pics of the white one they rolled out towards the end, looked incredible.

And yeah, that price is just bonkers for this much car. Overall, I think they nailed it. Not sure what more you could do at that price level and looks will always be subjective.

RE: Automotive News Discussion - Evan - 07-19-2019

Love love love love it so much. Amazing. $60k?!!!!! Unbelievable.
I think it looks fantastic. So much better than that awkward C7, and of course the sexy proportions of a mid engine car.
I will own one.....someday.

I agree 100% The GT should have ALWAYS been a Corvette and 911 fighter. (Instead Ford tarted up a mustang to $70k)
For that matter, the new NSX also should have been a 911 fighter, just like the original was

RE: Automotive News Discussion - CaptainHenreh - 07-19-2019

And this is the base. BASE.

We already know there's some insane twanturbuh engine out there, and now there is room for both a hybrid drivetrain for Chevy to crow about and awd to tear ass around a racetrack with.

God bless you, Corvette engineers. God bless you.

The internet luddite handbook clearly states that you are supposed to complain about not having a manual first,  THEN you can complain about technology.

Get with it Gramps. In all reality though I blame the design of CarPlay. I have no idea if this is true but I'm willing to bet OEMs are giving Apple/Google huge latitude to design everything about the infotainment center.

RE: Automotive News Discussion - .RJ - 07-19-2019

I dont care about the screens, they're fine. What I hate is that they always appear an afterthought, like, awww fuck, Frank you forgot the screen AGAIN and they just toss one on top of the dash.

RE: Automotive News Discussion - Steve85 - 07-19-2019

Honestly, I think it's an off the shelf part, same screen that goes in every other GM that gets a screen, but since the dash is so thin (something they mentioned in the reveal to improve forward vision) it amplifies the screen. Same screen in a Yukon gets absorbed by the size of everything else. I mean, it's always been something in the interior that gets compromised to get the performance / dollar out of the corvette.

But hey, at least we moved on from hating a configurable digital dash. 1984 internet-> "What? Digital dash? A sports car needs analog neeeeedddddllllllesssss"

Are you not bothered by losing a manual? It just isn’t the same for a weekend toy. Your only car with dct? Okay; but a fun weekend car it is kind of meh.

RE: Automotive News Discussion - ScottyB - 07-19-2019

i can go to a dealer now and buy a 480hp independent suspended mustang. a 700+hp challenger. a trophy truck. a camaro with 325 width tires and 6 piston brembos. a leather lined dually with 1000 lb ft of torque. a jeep pickup. or now a mid engined corvette.

guys...this is a hell of a time to be alive.
