Heat pipes arent "water cooled" in any commonly used sense of the phrase. But yeah, they work well at moving heat around.

So, I’m a tech idiot, not afraid to admit it. Learn me on good surround sound systems. The factory speaker on the new Samsung smart tv just isn’t cutting it. Between the living room and the dining room (where it can also be seen), we are asking the factory speakers to cover almost 1300sq.ft., and it doesn’t do it well. If there is no weather and nothing else running, it’s ok. But if it’s raining (our skylights are super loud), or the stove is going, etc, you can’t hear the TV. Not looking for a $3,000 system, but a decent sound bar, side speakers and a sub that will sync up easy with the tv would be great.
Also, because I don’t know shit about this, is a sound bar and a sub enough? Are side and rear speakers really necessary? We don’t have any hardcore needs out of it, but I’d like to not have to max out the factory built-in speakers just to hear a movie when it rains.

Do you prioritize space / compactness or overall sound quality?
You can put together a really high quality component system for marginally more than a sound bar and it will blow the bar out of the water sound wise, but it’s going to take up more space.

So space isn’t a big deal for me, we’ve got plenty of that. I’m more concerned with making it look clean. I’d rather not have cords laying all across the floor if I can help it. The area between the tv/center channel and where we would put the sub is fine for cords (we have others there), but any others I’ prefer to be wireless or not as intrusive. As for the size of the speakers, etc., that doesn’t really matter so much.

If it were me I would take the time to run the wire for the surround and get something like this - Yamaha YHT-4930UBL 5.1-Channel Home Theater in a Box System with Bluetooth https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071JY862G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_bCxEBbVGHDA9R
Then as money allows I would upgrade the front 2 channels with some Polk Monitor 70s and call it a day.

I'm a hardcore A/V receiver guy, but most others around here are sound bar with wireless rears and sub. For your use, I'd probably recommend the same because anything is a major upgrade and you'll get results more easily. I don't have experience with them, but people seem to like the Vizio systems.

I'll plug the Vizio 5.1 sound bar setup over and over for run of the mill TV/movie watching. Sound bar + 2 rear speakers and a sub. The only wires you'll see are from the sound bar to the TV and the rear speakers to the sub. It's fantastic quality for the price and ease of install.

Ditto. It's not the best, but for the money, I have zero complaints.
I doubt sound bars will ever pack the punch a receiver and speakers do, but ease of setup, flexibility, and cost push me to sound bars.

Just "hearing a movie when it rains" means forget the rear/side speakers. Personally unless it's a dedicated movie room, surround adds nothing but clutter and hassle.
If the focus is mostly for TV/movies, get a nice soundbar and sub.
If the focus is music, get bookshelf pair or slim floorstanding speaker pair (2nd the recommendation for the polks) and sub.

I used to have a surround sound setup but to second what Chan said, unless you have a dedicated movie room where the main sitting area is out from the rear wall a bit, rear surround sound does not sound good in my opinion.

Yeah I agree with the others. The Vizio 5.1 setup works well for me because the couch is against the wall and hides the wires running from the sub to each speaker.

Vizio's Atmos sound bar is out now. No idea if it'll be worth it.
In other news, for those who have smart homes or are building smart homes, are you doing mostly straight WiFi devices or going one of the other avenues like z-wave. (are there any others?) So far, I have Google homes, a Vizio (with built in Chromecast) and a hook WiFi to rf bridge that controls remote outlets. All of it is WiFi based.
I guess as I continue to build, I'm worried about having so many things fighting for the WiFi. I guess the other option would be a multi router Network (name is slipping my mind).
And I don't really know anything about the non WiFi connection. I guess you need a hub for most or all of them that connects to the WiFi. Anyone have experience with the best, easiest, most supported ways to grow a smart home?
Also, should we create an official smart home thread?!

For wireless sensors like door sensors, PIR sensors, etc, you really have to go zwave (or zigbee) for battery life. Plenty of options, I like the monoprice stuff for cost.
Smartthings is probably the best zwave/zigbee router out right now, but its not perfect and sometimes I want to throw it through a window.

Anyone tried the Pixel 3? My Original Pixel I bought at launch is really starting to crap out. Shuts off on its own below 20% and is generally shitty. How convenient that this is the month that I paid off my phone.
