what point? that black helicopters are stealing your tax return and computing your fine by your income?
I could make up some shit to get people all riled up, and post it on the internet and I bet some people would believe me, but it sure doesnt mean its happening.

All Im saying, is that if you're going to make claims like that, you need to back it up. Last I checked, we live in VA and are talking about VA.

Good, I can ignore all the other stupid crap typed.

Last I checked it was a discussion about speeding fines in VA, not cyclists.

To spell it out, a story about extreme speeding fines in Finalnd is no more OT than spandex clad cyclists in this thread.

RICHMOND, Jan. 22 -- The Virginia House of Delegates quickly and quietly voted Tuesday to tweak last year's landmark transportation package by repealing the costly, unpopular fees on dangerous drivers.

Good to hear it passed. Unfortunately, now all of you in NoVA will have to pay a 1% extra sales tax on any vehicle purchased.

- Jeff - 01-22-2008

Well, it still has to make it though the Senate.

horray for politicians and taxes!

Id rather they keep the fines and extend them to out of state drivers.

Hooray for maryland car dealerships getting that much more business! (assuming they didnt already have higher taxes, which they probably did)

- Ginger - 01-23-2008

MD's sales tax is 6% and their tax burden is 11%. Apparently Virginia pays a 3% car sales tax (I actually thought we paid more than that) and our tax burden is 10.2%.

You save 300 bucks buying new in MD due to smaller fees.

- Kaan - 01-23-2008

and as soon as you register in NOVA you get that 1% fee tacked on... no matter where you buy. Wink we need a shit pile MM house in Hburg where we can all register our cars...

I bought my wrx in MD, and as I recall, I paid the tax on it when I registered it, not when I bought it. (or maybe I paid both?)

- Andy - 01-23-2008

You pay taxes where you register it but my point is that you're still better off buying in MD.

The dealer collects tax for the state you're registering with because they title and tag the vehicle for you in your home state. I bought my S4 in Delaware and thought I was gonna get it tax free but was salty when they collected the 3%.

- HAULN-SS - 01-23-2008

^same for me when I bought my legacy. It was tagged and registered when I drove it off the lot - I'm assuming they could've done the same evne if it was an out of state dealer

What happens if you buy a car off the internet direct from chevy or whoever - could you buy it tax free like you can everything else?

Yup - thats how it worked when we bought our WRX in Maryland.

If you don't pay sales tax you're "required" to pay a 3% usage fee to the DMV when you register it.

FYI - You're supposed to do the same thing with everything you buy off the internet on your taxes each year.

In my case, the dealer did not do that. My car was not registered or tagged when I drove it home. Probably because I negotiated an "out the door" price.
