Nice! Good call on the DD's...mine were crazy bright, are yours?

Project: AWD Turbo Family Hauler (PART DEUX) - JustinG - 07-22-2018

They aren't crazy bright. Same brightness, different temp. I did the foglight specific 3k lumen vs the headlight lumen of like 6k. I didn't wanna overwhelm the headlights.

Upgrading our roof box from a Yakima Rocketbox 11.

REI has em 20% off for Labor day, plus I'll get 10% back at end of the year.

Looking at the 16 and the 18

I'd like to get the 18, cause 2 more cubic ft. But I'm concerned it'll look too big on the wagon.

In the future, I'm only going wagon or truck, so it should be good for the foreseeable future.

18 on an allroad

18 on a Sport Wagon

Thule XL on Derecolas car, which is 2in shorter in length, 1in shorter height than the 18 I want.

I am really leaning towards the 18. But figured I'd ask opinions. The 18 is 2in longer than my Current Rocketbox 11, but 36in wide vs 24.

Thoughts?

If you get it please, please, please get the lowest profile bars you can find otherwise it just looks like you're driving around like this:

Yakima Whisper Bars, same as the Thule Aeros.

Now picture it centered and 12in wider.

RE: Project: AWD Turbo Family Hauler (PART DEUX) - HAULN-SS - 08-28-2018

Are you leaving it on full time? All of those look pretty terrible, so just get the biggest one if youre just using it for trips

Project: AWD Turbo Family Hauler (PART DEUX) - JustinG - 08-28-2018

Just for trips/vacations or weekends where the dog is taking up the back and we have stuff to carry (JMU home games, Christmas, etc)

I'm not getting a super low pro box that's color matched and only carries a pair of skis and poles.

RE: Project: AWD Turbo Family Hauler (PART DEUX) - Apoc - 08-28-2018

Personally, I'd do the 16 as I'm not a fan of large overhang over the windshield. I think you mentioned you already have to lower the rear hatch max height, but it didn't matter because you have to duck anyway. I'd want to not have to do that and keep front overhang more reasonable. My box is 17 cu. ft. and I can't say I'd make a ton of use of more space.

Also, I don't see the problem with this - it looks badass!

I don't read. I just repost. That's how social media works.

The over hang of the 18 looks pretty comical. I vote for the 16.

RE: Project: AWD Turbo Family Hauler (PART DEUX) - Sijray21 - 08-29-2018

if you don't mind the overhang (since it's the same as your older one) just get the 18. The overhang would be the biggest issue i would have, plus more storage if you need any.

Project: AWD Turbo Family Hauler (PART DEUX) - JustinG - 08-29-2018

Welp....

The fact that it was only 2in longer than my existing box and allows the hatch to open fully, with less front overhang due to the design.

Made me go with the 18, almost doubling my capacity.

Huge kudos to REI.

I asked what their return policy was, and explained I thought I wanted the 18, but was concerned it was too big for the wagon. So I may need to return it for the 16.

"Well why don't we just wheel this display outside and you make the call"

Maybe I'm blind. But I don't think it looks anymore out of place than my last box....
