changed some more fluids but didn't set anything on fire or give myself chemical burns so if you're here for that please exit

was filling up washer fluid, looked over at the clutch reservoir..."huh...wow that's kinda skunky maybe i should flush that"

who wants 100,000 mile coffee?

clutch slave is on the front of the block under the intake mani next to the starter, required a belly pan drop and getting up on ramps, but otherwise not the usual pain in the dick that everything else is to get to....give it 2/10 sore dicks. simple gravity bleed, took about 40 mins to slowly drip it through until it was clear.

its a 100k mile, ~10 year old civic with lousy paint.  spent most of its life droning up and down I-85 and sitting in parking garages, and lately ferries kids to school and groceries to my house.

it deserves a more interesting life so i'm fixing that.

RE: You're My Boy, Blue - ScottyB - 05-20-2019

first rallyx for Blue under the belt and it was overall a lot of positive punctuated with a lot of negative garbage unrelated to the car.

the good - official times aren't in yet but at a glance i was slightly behind the veteran FWD guys on snow tires, which makes me think i'd be competitive if i had traction.  hilariously tail happy.  more than enough power, long 1st gear made it easy to ride the powerband and stretch it out between corners.  never bottomed out, didn't even scrape the front apron.  suspension held up fine and did a good job of mixing compliance and keeping response.  good brake bias for trailbraking.

the bad - spin, spin, spin.  that Torsen ain't gonna torse if both tires have no grip.  the wheel/tire sizing was perfect, but the tread on the no-seasons was just unable to do anything, anywhere and i spent most of the time just figuring out where i could straighten the car out so i could do more than feather the throttle.  i kind of knew that going in, but its really apparent now that without proper tires i'm just going to stay frustrated.  with (A) aggressive snows or (B) a course that was open enough it would have been a genuinely fast car.

don't laugh at that monte carlo.  he was in the hunt for fastest stock FWD time.

AWD of all vintages out today
[Image: dGrtSMm.jpg]

not sure if i mentioned the dust.  everywhere.  everything is dust.

had some time to think on the way home and it hit me that this venue just sucks.  if i'm honest, it sucked the last 2 times i was there in the 2.5RS and it still sucks now.  insanely hot in the middle of who-gives-a-damn GA, choking dust, the course is just way too compact to have any kind of enjoyable flow and we had some real bullshit to deal with from the property management who decided to water down the course in the morning for dust control, which resulted in a course so slick that after the first 5 cars went off, event staff had to take an HOUR (oops now you get less runs) to reroute the course enough that people wouldn't slide into the trees....while course workers (me included) stood in the sun and cooked.  and then the water truck appeared, unannounced, again IN THE MIDDLE OF OUR RUN GROUP, the last one of the day.  just drove in out of nowhere and souped the course.  they couldn't wait 15 minutes for the rest of us to finish and pack the event up, just F you, good luck everybody else.

i know what wet clay does to the chassis of a car.  its also undrivable on street tires.  its nearly undrivable on off road tires.  case in point, here's a seasoned driver in a built rally car on dedicated rally tires, reduced to idling the car through the last half of the course.  what a joke.  oh yeah, it has an LS1.

as a result i just said NOPE and rolled back to grid and packed up, so my last 2 or 3 runs in the afternoon are DNF.  i'm done paying anybody for the privilege to stand in fire ant mounds and get shithoused by clay dust so i can bail on half my runs thanks to a phantom water truck.  i know its hard to find places where people will let 20+ people tear ass in their field, but i'm out there to have fun and this is the opposite.  there's talk of ATL SCCA finding a new venue for rallyx in the fall, and if it looks like a better deal i'll try again.  unfortunately the next closest events are 3+ hours away, so they're out of the question.  until then, looks like Blue will stay less dirty for a while.

anyway.  got some cool shots of the mod classes while i was working...

this B5 audi is what you call a Bad Mf'er.  V6 non turbo, i can't imagine what an S4 would do.

extremely competent, experienced driver with an extremely prepped WRX.  those are UK market WRC headlights and WRC wing among a bunch of other high dollar, rare parts.  almost too nice to beat up.

i know it looks like it should be on the way to the crusher but this VW was so dialed it was scary.  if he's not FTD he's gotta be runner up.  you see this theme a lot in rallyx.

this Mazda3 had 300,000 miles...so rally it
[Image: KanYASD.jpg]

no subarus spun bearings today!  it felt a bit weird seeing them all leave under their own power.  this guy drove 3 hours here and back again, more ballsy than i am that's for sure.

2 N/A imprezas, the wagon was almost identical to my old 2.5RS so i felt the feels.  the blue one was cammed and running rally tires, and a legit contender and what i wish i could have built my old RS into.  the wagon was a mother/son duo, look at that smile!  proper family bonding time.

no pics of my run group since i was the only guy there with a camera.  shame...would have liked to see how the Si looked in action.

RE: You're My Boy, Blue - ScottyB - 05-20-2019

all of my morning footage was more or less worthless due to an external mic failure.  the rest was junk due to a shaky mount.  ran the final run with the suction mount on the sunroof which seems to be the way to go.

can't really be seen in the video but the car's very neutral midcorner and tailhappy on braking.  just a lot of push on exit unfortunately.

anybody else struggling to get the GoPro app to work with older units like a Hero 3+?  i can't get the screen preview to work on the pixel2.  sucks, because that's the way i normally see how my mounting position is working and would have saved me from finding out later that my external mic was fubar'd. i just took a wild guess that my gopro was looking the right direction and thankfully it worked out.

Are you in third gear most of the time?

Damn. I originally thought that but I'm like, "nah that's faster than first." Where are the RPM most of the time and is that common for dirt? I'm pretty clueless about the topic.

RE: You're My Boy, Blue - ScottyB - 05-20-2019

at fuel cut in first (8200 rpm) i'm at like...35mph? most of the fast guys were doing the same...first until after the big carousel.

complicating matters further is the peaky powerband. nice flat torque curve but power ramps significantly after 6000 rpm. a lot of balancing between wheelspin and not bogging. again, tires would have been a big difference to really get out of corners on the high side of 1st gear.

RE: You're My Boy, Blue - Jake - 05-20-2019

It's weird to hear... tire squeal? on dirt. Or was that some other noise? Looks like fun though! I can definitely tell the powerband is peaky like you mention. Do you run courses that are longer/faster? I feel like the couple times I ran with WDCR Rallycross, it was a faster course.

That said, it was second gear in a 1992 Volvo 240 with 250k+ so maybe 35 is all we did.

RE: You're My Boy, Blue - Goodspeed - 05-20-2019

Man that looks like fun.  I'd love to do a rally school like Dirtfish one of these days and your vid isn't helping me avoid beating the hell out of a car on dirt.

Crazy that you had that experience with the course & water truck.  I never would've assumed it would be that difficult to find a good plot of land and you'd have the pick of many litters to play in.

Great pics btw!  I'm pretty H&B'ed for this car:

I believe WDCR SCCA lost their normal spot at the Rally Farm as well.

it is!  i don't have a good shot, but wherever the silt was pushed away you'd see grey clay underneath where the rubber literally transferred to the surface.  its nearly like concrete.

when i used to run with the Tarheel Sports Car Club, their site was fantastic.  old fair ground, wide open and good compacted sand surface.  it was possible to get well into 3rd on those courses.  i WISH i was still able to run those, because the Si would be perfect on them.  that is not normal though...most SCCA courses are purposefully limited to keeping people somewhere near 2nd gear for insurance reasons.

so the site is at Durhamtown Off Road Resort. Its a sprawling trail network where you basically take a dirt bike/4 wheeler and go ham all day in the woods. i think they have a team of water truck guys that just go and soak anything the trucks can get to, in order to get the dust down. i don't think they know of, or care about what events are going on...just soak anything dusty and move on. it sucks.

not to let the cat outta the bag too much, but i'll let you know how it is. i won a gift certificate for Dirtfish after coming 2nd in their "Dirtee Dancing" shirt contest and i'm not sure yet when i'm heading out there. looking to do a full day class in the BRZ. i promise, its more fun than you think.

its not as hard on the car's drivetrain as autocross or tracking. the suspension takes some hits though, as well as your paint if you're on gravel. and of course best to avoid slamming the oil pan off of any jumps.

yeah that WRX is Tits McGee. i don't want to think about the money he's sunk into it, but damn if i don't respect that guy for taking it out there and dirtying it up.

i believe i heard that too. the biggest issue is liability and cleanup. rally cars make a ton of dust, noise, and rut the ground up. the places that work out best are private property, but unfortunately those tend to be farms which also have rough fields full of rocks that will destroy most street cars. around most metro areas its very hard to find any land that meet the criteria you need.

RE: You're My Boy, Blue - ScottyB - 05-21-2019

got the results in, and honestly i'm surprised and pleased.  counting my 5 runs before i bailed, i was about 6 of 18 overall and would have come in 2nd out of 4 FWD cars.  if anything i was at least consistent, only 1 cone and all my runs were basically within a second of each other.

i think i was the fastest car on normal street tires, beat all the Mod AWD guys except 1 and all the Mod Rear.  good start and now i have a better idea where i stand.

back to normal life - all cleaned up and hardparking at Costco.

RE: You're My Boy, Blue - Senor_Taylor - 05-21-2019

Just watched the video. That course is so much smoother and flatter than the rally farm. I can see how you'd take a normal car there.

RE: You're My Boy, Blue - rherold9 - 05-21-2019

This is awesome. Can't believe you took this car out for rallyx. I share your gripes about little seat time and baking in the sun while working, it's a huge reason auto-x became un-enjoyable for me. Hopefully you get a venue that's enjoyable in the future

Great pics, btw!
