It turns out this Nighthawk is an excellent travel companion. Beefy but comfortable and a GMT hand without having to do math in my head is awesome. Coincidentally I feel like many of the commercial pilots I see wear some variant of Citizen, I've seen several of these and a number of Skyhawks (the watch I used to have and sold) in the wild. It's probably due to their durability and reliability. Breitling markets hard as being an aviator's watch but I can't say that I've ever seen a commercial pilot wearing one anyway.

The Uncle Seiko beads of rice bracelet with fitted end links arrived while I was away on business, so I will get that fitted this weekend and take some pics of it on the SKX. That should finish off that project nicely Smile I was able to sell the other one I ordered with straight end links from Yobokies and broke even on the new bracelet, and I might have a taker on my Tissot which would get me close to break even on the Nighthawk purchase

I can't imagine they pay commercial pilots well enough for them all to be rocking Navitimers. Isn't it like $100k-ish max these days?

My coworker's brother is a commercial pilot and I'm told he makes $$$$$$$$$$.
Quote:The Bureau of Labor Statistics, BLS, reports that airline pilots earned an average of $118,070 per year in 2011.Senior pilots, called captains, earn considerably more than first officers. According to the 2009 FltOps salary survey, the average maximum pay for a captain across the airline industry was $165,278. JetBlue has the lowest maximum captain's salary, $123,400. Southwest once again tops the list, with a maximum captain salary of $181,270. Among major carriers, U.S. Airways reported a maximum captain salary of $138,240, Delta $156,538, and United $159,508. Captain salaries at Continental Airlines were reported as $166,882, while those at American earned $167,125.

Huh, that's a bit better than I thought. My point stands though, most people who earn $120k probably aren't droppng 8-10k on a Navitimer. Especially if they have kids.

Challenge accepted. Just kidding... I'm poor.

If you want to compare those salaries to say, IT or finance jobs in major metro areas, thats not that much money - note the figure was average maximum. I've heard it takes a LONG time to get into one of those major carrier commercial pilot seats, too.

It does, IIRC junior pilots make a laughably small amount of money. It's definitely not until you get to senior status that those guys do "well".

I mean I have seen Rolexes on pilots' wrists before but I think it's more likely that they are looking at their watches more as a tool than a statement. A $300 ecodrive Citizen with world time / atomic / GMT function is generally more useful than most luxury watches.

Re: Lee's Watch Thread for MM'ers of Impeccable Taste - Apoc - 06-09-2017

True story. That's entry level for the 20-somethings we hire, depending on education. Being a pilot is a lot like the Feds... shit until you're there for 25 years.

Re: Lee's Watch Thread for MM'ers of Impeccable Taste - SlimKlim - 06-09-2017

Entry level hires or entry level pay for 20-somethings with several years of experience?

If your entry level hires are making six figures I'm starting to regret being a smartass to you all the time...

Re: Lee's Watch Thread for MM'ers of Impeccable Taste - Apoc - 06-09-2017

First jobs outta college on my old team ranged from 85k to 165k. The high end are PhD's, but you get the point. FWIW, started at 115k with 10 years experience... but that was because Amazon had no idea what to pay an analyst in HR.

Wow, that's awesome. My starting salary was less than half of the bottom of that range. Granted, I didn't have a PHD, and I knew nothing whatsoever.

The project went under the knife one last time:

The Uncle Seiko BoR with fitted endlinks was the cap on a really fun build. I think it gives it that perfect, classy vintage touch.

Pilot jobs are worse than that - working for a regional carrier, you'll qualify for welfare. You work a whole career , finally get to the point you're flying jumbos overseas twice a month maybe making double 6 figures, and then they make you retire in 5 years.

Re: Lee's Watch Thread for MM'ers of Impeccable Taste - WRXtranceformed - 06-11-2017

I need this

From the Watchuseek store:

Things are gonna change really quickly on that front as soon as this huge wave of baby boomer pilots retire. Pilot shortages in commercial aviation are gonna be in the thousands and shortages have already hit the military heavily. For you young guys, it might not be a bad time to sign with Uncle Sam and become a fighter pilot 8) They're paying big retention bonuses (30% of salary) just to keep pilots in the service.

So I've been wearing this thing for a few weeks. I do really enjoy the feel of it on my wrist. Having a watch is nice that I don't have to take my phone out to check the time and it's a nice bonus I can get notifications/texts/activity tracker. Also love having the weather on the screen. Latest watch face is below. I like the fact that I can change the face whenever I please.

Just ordered a Seiko 5 Automatic blue dial diver, should be here in the next few days. I'm excited about my first automatic watch.

Nice! That was one thing I did like about the smart watch was being able to change faces whenever I got bored with one. If you were a graphic designer, it might be a pretty cool little side gig to design and sell faces via the Samsung / Android / Apples stores.

Very cool!! Which one? Would love to look up and see which movement it is and details
