So you're grumpy because you think it cost $1800 and you think it can't run any games and also it's hers and not yours but you'll use it because you can't be bothered to buy anything but a phone to use? K.

The cheapest iMac is $1,099 and many companies have deals with Apple to provide another $100 or so off through the Employee Purchase Plan, which is available both in-store and online at store.apple.com. Some people like the "it just works" approach to Apple's shit so even for a Facebook machine, maybe it's worth spending a bit more to have that experience, as well as a brick-and-mortar store nearby if you need any service on the unit during your ownership. There is also appeal in one company that makes the hardware and software so you aren't dealing with Dell saying it's a Windows issue and Microsoft saying it's a hardware issue, etc.

Next, yes, there are games for Mac. You can run iRacing through Steam which is very easily available. I don't play video games but here is a list of some that are apparently popular.

I'm not trying to be the most ardent Apple supporter because frankly, the time came for a new laptop on my end recently and I bought a Lenovo. That said, I worked at several of their stores throughout college and get the appeal they have to a lot of folks. It's also not 1994 anymore, the internet is very real and Google is wonderful, so your posts about "hurrhurr I don't get Macs so hard can't do anything with them" are both outdated and unfounded if you'd take thirty seconds to do some research.

Carry on.

Also, by the way, I never once said I was grumpy or upset. Someone else made that assumption. I'm just giving my anti Apple leaning opinion. And especially based off what even many of the Apple fanbois on here have been saying that new Apple's usually just aren't worth the money.

I only brought it up because I know there are many Apple users here and was hoping to get opinions or tips from people I trust rather than some random internet people. Which is why I ask so many questions here (especially tech) because I trust this group more than the millions of contradictory posts all over the internet. Seems easier to ask here than to spend hours sifting through what could be useful information and what is just shit.

FWIW, loving the Pixel2 so far and i don't regret not getting the 2XL at all, this is plenty big for a phone i'm carrying in my pocket at all times. the charge times are extremely fast with the USB cord, you can pile on 30-40% of a charge within 30 minutes. Oreo is fast and intuitive. the camera lives up to the hype. the AMOLED screen looks great, i'm sure sticklers would fault it at a larger size but for a smallish form factor its very pretty. one thing i didn't realize is how light it is, its lighter than my old iphone4s despite being almost twice as big.

i did have to dick around with one backend solution off the bat - downloading an obscure update to get "portrait mode" on the selfie camera, which obviously i need for all my glamour shots. the stock plastic texture on the phone case is super slippery if you have dry hands. i have to unlearn years of looking for the "screen off" button on the top of the phone like apple does vs. having it on the side. still learning about the google ecosystem on this as well.

picked up a whie Caseology Legion for the stormtrooper feel. the protection level/size is a nice compromise between function and low bulk. debating on a screen protector...don't really feel like i need it and its seems like a lot of them are cheap garbage.

Dude they haven't had the lock button on the top of the iPhone in like 6 years. You must be going nuts upgrading from an iPhone 4 to anything 2018 technology wise.

yeah, turns out modern stuff is pretty nice.

Lock button on the side came with the iPhone 6 in 2014 Smile

RE: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thread! - JPolen01 - 01-23-2018

Ahh ok I thought it was on the side on the 5. Okay - 4 years is still a long freakin' time with a phone.

So I have always nerded out on 3D printing. I remember when JMU first got their 3D printer and we took a tour of the lab. It was a lot like the computers from back in the day it was huge. Now I'm pretty amazed that something so complex is now the size of a regular printer and won't cost you hundreds of thousands of dollars.

I figured with my first NASA check from the season I would probably just go ahead and snag one. Spoke with Matt Leech who has a 3D printer and he gave me some recommendations with my price point. I decided to go with the Maker Select Plus from Monoprice.

But with an unexpected work reward in the form of a gift card and a coupon code, I decided to go ahead and pull the trigger.

Ideally I'd like to start getting into designing things to print, but for now I'll stick to what's already been designed on thingiverse.com.

Here's a few things that I've printed so far.

The elephant was my first test run, it was a test file included with the printer, everything else was found on Thingiverse.

Then I printed a lithographic Ariel pendant for the kid which turned out pretty cool.

Next up was a watch band slide designed to hold the puck from a Disney Magic Band (Far Left).

Last was the M keychain.

Next up I'm going to print off some parts that improve the printer (tool holders, fan shrouds, etc). Probably hook it up to a Raspberry Pi giving me the ability to print wirelessly versus always having to insert an SD card.

Future predictions since you are getting rid of the prius?!??!?!!?
Wink

Really cool, I love 3D printers, post up about more stuff you do.  I feel like this stuff would be really cool to fabricate things for a race car build so I have been keeping my eye on them.

A BMW is on the shortlist, M sport is as good as it'll get though.

RE: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thread! - ScottyB - 01-25-2018

that's extremely cool. i'm in the same boat...crazy watching these things come down in size and price over the last 5 years. it used to be super exotic to have one in a lab or engineering/prototyping dept.

The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thread! - JPolen01 - 01-25-2018

That's rad. Don't me in the this is really cool camp. A friend of mine is really big into this and posts tips and things all the time. Let me know if you want me to connect you.

That pendant with varying levels of light passing through it for shading is something I haven't seen. Cool!

RE: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thread! - Jewels - 01-26-2018

Can you make another of those pendants for my kid? Cause you know.... princesses and shit.

Yup, waiting on new filament to come in since I ran through the small amount of test filament they sent with the printer.

I'll have Black, Neon Green, Purple, Pink, and Blue shortly. Just name your color.

RE: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thread! - Jewels - 01-26-2018

Gonna need it in Purple. H's favorite color is purple. Thanks! Let me know how much I owe ya!

Can we just take a minute to marvel at how far battery technology has become? The wife and I went out last night and stayed in an airbnb - I didn't even bother bring a charger.

That's pretty damn awesome. The battery on my iPhone 7 barely lasts a day. I'll be getting it replaced while Apple is running the $29 replacement deal.

The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thread! - Sully - 01-28-2018

Mine lasts about half a day before I have to start limiting use so I can make it home to recharge around 6:30. But I'm an extremely heavy user for power hungry apps like Facebook and internet browsing.
