RE: Automotive News Discussion - Senor_Taylor - 01-14-2019 I still don't think I'll ever get over the fact that it's a BMW motor. The entire reverence of the MKIV was the 2JZ. How can Toyota think that they can make a Supra without a Toyota motor? I bet the entire sum of my money that we see a 2JZ swapped MKV supra at SEMA the first year. Yes, I understand this is a great motor. RE: Automotive News Discussion - *insertusernamehere* - 01-14-2019 Oh those new photos make it much more attractive and red doesn't do that car justice. Didn't even need to wait to see it in person, I like it already. I'm into it. No offense G, but you can't critique this car for almost anything in regard to design when you drive a Type R
RE: Automotive News Discussion - Mike - 01-14-2019 Dropped in to let you all know the new Supra is an abomination. Automotive News Discussion - G.Irish - 01-14-2019 That's what I'm saying. If even I can't stomach it... Looks wise I would take all of the other cars in that segment over the Supra. M2, Stingray, GT350, SS1LE, base 718... Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using Tapatalk That's what I'm saying. If even I can't stomach it... I do think it's probably the type of car that looks much better in some colors, but still Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using Tapatalk Automotive News Discussion - Eco_Boi_Stephen - 01-14-2019 Oh baby the new GT500 is hot. No manual option idrc about that though ![]() Sent from my SM-N950U using Tapatalk RE: Automotive News Discussion - BLINGMW - 01-14-2019 (01-14-2019, 09:34 AM)Senor_Taylor Wrote: I still don't think I'll ever get over the fact that it's a BMW motor. I bet the entire sum of my money that we see a 2JZ swapped MKV supra at SEMA the first year. I *sort of* excuse them for the engine, they at least understood the car should have a I6, and they haven't made one in 10 years. That being said, couldn't they have done better by dusting off the 2JZ drawings and bringing the engine management and turbo to current standards? Call it the 3JZ; people would go nuts. But no, not only is it the engine, the whole drivetrain, chassis, suspension, is BMW. And the interior, dash, controls too? The freaking dumb-ass iDrive even? To a Toyota fan, what exactly about driving this car is going to make them feel like it's a Toyota other than the badges? Will a Toyota dealer even service it or do they have you take it next door to the BMW dealer? https://jalopnik.com/the-2019-toyota-supra-is-a-bmw-parts-bin-car-1829563030 RE: Automotive News Discussion - Steve85 - 01-14-2019 (01-14-2019, 01:30 PM)BLINGMW Wrote:(01-14-2019, 09:34 AM)Senor_Taylor Wrote: I still don't think I'll ever get over the fact that it's a BMW motor. After seeing the interior pics (I was pretty shocked to be honest, had no idea there was THAT much borrowing), pretty much exactly this. RE: Automotive News Discussion - JPolen01 - 01-14-2019 ^^I don't think any of us anticipated that it would be a BMW down to the gear selector, infotainment display, and iDrive. That is pretty damn lazy on Toyota's part. They essentially farmed out their entire flagship sports car. RE: Automotive News Discussion - ScottyB - 01-14-2019 i thought this thing was in development for years and years too...you'd think they'd have time to design all the switchgear. RE: Automotive News Discussion - Evan - 01-14-2019 Even the FR-S / 86 has brand specific infotainment. Are there Z4 leaks to compare the car to? I kinda see a half-assed resemblance to the MKIV in the headlights if I squint. RE: Automotive News Discussion - ScottyB - 01-14-2019 also, does this mean supra guys can now go to a BMW dealer for cheaper OEM parts? that'd be weird to get all your supra's engine consumables from FCP Euro. Automotive News Discussion - JustinG - 01-14-2019 Hey BMW Hans, snag that new Z4 chassis we already figured out then slap a bigger turbo and a working oil pump to an X5 engine....annndddddd that's lunch. 3yrs later.... I present the "Supra", that'll be $1bil Mr. Toyota, k thanks. RE: Automotive News Discussion - Gordonovski - 01-14-2019 I said this in the student chat, but if Toyota had just restarted production of the mkIV, people would be ec-fucking-static. Instead we got this lumpy BMW Z4-ND RF crossover bullshit with a duck tail moderately inspired by the mkIV. The 3/4 shot of the roof line going into the haunches is just hideous. Automotive News Discussion - G.Irish - 01-14-2019 Problem is that crash standards and emissions means they couldn't do that. And tooling and supply chain set up is massively expensive too, even if they used most of the same parts from the MKIV. Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using Tapatalk RE: Automotive News Discussion - Gordonovski - 01-14-2019 That's totally fair, mainly just thinking how far off the mark they were with this design. Also, the center console looks like it was designed for RHD with that "wall" coming up to block access to the area underneath the radio. Automotive News Discussion - G.Irish - 01-14-2019 Yeah I think if they started out with the MKIV look and modernized it, that would've been a styling win. Also, had they slapped the S55 in there, far fewer people would be complaining. Scotty hit the nail on the head. It's teased for years and years and years and then.....outsourced to a German company? Seems legit I don't think there's any argument that Toyota has lost its sporting-car ways (01-14-2019, 07:09 PM)WRXtranceformed Wrote:(01-14-2019, 04:21 PM)ScottyB Wrote: i thought this thing was in development for years and years too...you'd think they'd have time to design all the switchgear. And the savage Facebook comment of the day goes to some faithful internet warrior on DriveTribe: "Remember the last time Germany and Japan teamed up, and how that went?"
