The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thread! - Sully - 01-15-2018

I'm sure the pixel is just as good as any other Android but they all seem to be pretty rundown by the end of year two in my experience (or just the technology comes so much further by then)

So fiance just bought herself a new iMac against my advising so I've kind of just been staying out of it but wondering if anyone has any advice of things we need to do to it or anything. She watched a YouTube video about buying the cheaper one and upgrading the ram yourself but idk how much she looked into that before pulling the trigger. Is it really as simple as opening the back and popping in a few more memory boards? Anything else to consider? She kind of already bought it so not much we can do about purchasing options but I know nothing about Macs but since my computer is shit, I'll probably have to learn how to use this to at least the extent of emails that I don't want to send on a tablet and things you can't do on a tablet. I already made her put chrome browser on it which should take care of 70% of my use on it and I know she plans on putting MS Word on it which will cover the other 30% of my needs at moment.

New mac? Do nothing. Just use it. Continue to do nothing.

If you got chrome on there that is all you need. I despise safari. Other than that it is a computer that does computer things.

I love how you're grumpy just because it's different and that sounds hard.

iFixit is a good resource for step-by-step upgrade guides, or they used to be. iMacs are historically not super user-serviceable but the RAM is the exception.

You can use any browser worth a damn and at this point, any popular software you'd want to use probably has a Mac version. I believe all new Macs come with a free license for iWork, which is Apple's version of Office. Pages, Keynote and Numbers are the programs and they are generally really good, and will read/write the standard Office file formats. Just another option if you/she don't want to drop the money on Office right this second.

If you ask I'm sure someone could get you an Office license.

I mean it is an $1800 computer that I came even turn into a racing sim. And she definitely doesn't need it for like photo editing and stuff like you would want a Mac for.

But I would definitely love a discount on MS office if anyone can hook me up

I think what he is trying to say is she bought a really expensive iMac to browse facebook.

I feel that.  I bought a really expensive iPad this year that so far has been only been used to browse pinterest.

Yeah that's my read on it, in which case, yeah i'd be "grumpy" about it too.

My wife got a Fire tablet for like four years, then I upgraded her to a Samsung tablet. She thought is was amazing.  Cool

You guys gotta learn to lower the bar so you can jump over it with ease!

The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thread! - Sully - 01-16-2018

Yes and it was my understanding that Mac can't run most games and stuff. At least a PC, I could use for a Sim build too. She had no need for a Mac other than that she thought they were cooler or better or something.

And my comment was mostly towards Jake's post about me being mad just cause it's different but I still have no way to quote on Tapatalk

So you're pissed she bought what she wanted and not something that also suits you?

This is why the wife and I have personal money and joint money. Do whatever the hell you want with your own money without being questioned.

Why not?  Or did you read that in a FB meme?

The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thread! - Sully - 01-16-2018

Do most games run on Mac? I was under the impression they did not. Do most wheel setups work with Mac?

Seriously asking, idk.

She can buy whatever she wants. Which is why I said I stayed out of the decision process but my computer is shot so if you're going to buy something stationary like that, it wouldn't be bad for it to be something we can both use. Plus like I said before, the main reason I don't like it, is because she doesn't need any of the usability of a Mac. She doesn't take it edit photos or so anything on a computer that needs the media capabilities of a Mac. I'm honestly not even sure why she bought a new computer. But I didn't say she couldn't get it. I'm just saying I feel we could have gotten something not useful to the both of us.

Does she do sim racing?

Sounds like y'all got some communication that needs to be worked out but I'm not touching that one with a 10 foot pole.

+1

I started to type out a reply a bit ago and decided it was none of my business... for once.

The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thread! - Sully - 01-16-2018

I bet she'd rather I do sim racing then real racing Wink

So while you co habitate I get why you think you get to use her computer. But last I checked she would be free to use her own money for whatever she wants without taking your feelings into account. Not I get that you've said as much, but what you really are saying, you are irritated that she got what she wanted and didn't care how you felt about it. Well...tough. If it bothers you so much, perhaps you should address that with her instead of whining on the interwebs to your bros....cause Sully....we aren't exactly the touchy feely types around here.

The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thread! - Sully - 01-16-2018

I'm not irritated she didn't take my feelings into account. But I guess I'm just an asshole. Got it.
