You would think that with all of the technology our military has, that we would think of a better solution to slow incoming jets on an aircraft carrier than some ghetto ass cables.

ouch, thats an expensive cable snap.

its not just cables bolted to the deck, they are attached to arresting engines which to oversimplify operates on a similar hydraulic principle of a shock absorber.
the cables definately do wear out though, they replace them after X landings (and I dont think X is very many)

I figured it was more than just cables, but it still seems kind of archaic. Especially considering the cost of the things that they're designed to slow down and the number of exposed bodies on the deck of an aircraft carrier.

Fighter planes land on average at like 150mph. I'm not an engineer or anything but maybe some kind of powerful electromagnets? Better brakes / tire compounds on the planes?

50k lb aircraft traveling 150 mph in 300 feet with brakes and tires? Give me some of those for my car! If my math is right, that would stop my car from 100 in 12 feet. :mrgreen:

The primary roads are clear but have probably turned to ice by now. Secondary roads along with parking lots are hit or miss. :dunno:

Me: I sold it.
Lady: When?
Me: I dunno like last year sometime?
Lady: According to the DMV you sold it January 12, 2009, is that right?
Me: That sounds close.
Lady: Well unless you give me a different date that's the one I'm going to use sir.
Me: Yeah, I mean, that sounds close we'll go with that but my tax bill is from January 09 to Dec 09, and I didn't have the truck!
Lady: I understand that, SIR, hold please.
Me: ...
Lady: Ok, that takes care of your tax bill.
Me: Uh, ok?
Lady: Thank you have a good day!

You should see the hoops I had to jump through to get my car devalued for tax purposes. I couldn't email or fax proof of high mileage, I had to physically mail shit in to the local tax office. I was like really? Who still mails stuff? I think I got a check back for like $60 or $80 though, so it was worth it!

I got a tax bill last year for the race car, that I sold in since 2006 not too long after I let the tags run out. Same shit every year. If my garage wasnt a revolving door this crap wouldnt happen of course :lol:
