The new Samsung fast charge pads are dual coil. At least the stand one is. And it also has a lip that holds the phone. Works perfectly fine for my phone. Lip isn't robust enough to hold my 8" tablet though. I have a first gen flat Samsung pad large rectangle that I use at night and that one can be kind of a pain but works fine and the stand up one also works great. I wouldn't hesitate from buying another one but ymmv

Anyone tried a chromebox or chromebit, paired with a 24-27" touchscreen? An ASUS chromebox (G096U) and ACER 27" display (T272HL) seem ideal for eachother, and ideal for my parents, but neither company bothers producing any documentation that claims to support anything.

Apple Security Bug

Just a heads up for anyone with a newer-ish Mac and/or running High Sierra. Right now, anyone can walk up to your Mac and type in root for the username and no password and log in.

My S8 just got an update overnight to upgrade its software for the next gen Verizon 1 gig LTE. Oh ho ho! Dunno when the service will go live in our area but cell service faster than my lightning fast home fiber? I'll take it!

it takes "courage" to screw up a security exploit like that.

So I've been having a couple issues with my new Vizio TV. Let's say it worked fine 90-95% of the time but about once a day usually shortly after turning it on, the picture would freeze but audio would keep going for 20 seconds then it would reset itself, turn off then on again and be fine. But it would also randomly 3 or so times a week, turn itself on in the middle of the night and just stay on its app screen. Then lately, the image would get all pixelated instead of freeze. First chat with Vizio said do a soft reset (since I had already tried a hard) and we'll log the issue and keep an eye on it. Obviously this doesn't fix it so I contact then again. Ok, no problem, we'll send someone out to fix it. Ok cool, this thing is huge and I don't feel like exchanging it or shipping it back to be fixed plus no tv during that time.

So repair subcontractor contacts me and after a week of back and forth, we finally get our schedules synced up enough for him to come do repair. Vizio mails him through parts and he just comes out and replaces them. There's literally 4 boards and the screen in the tv. It would have been stupid easy for me to do this but whatever. They sent him a "new" power board and a new input (where all the inputs come in) board. So all that's really left is like a tiny wifi board and something else.

I help him take the back off and he pops old out and new in. We rehang the tv and he plugs it in. The screen is black but like a on black. And then a dim white outline of the Vizio logo pops up and then the screen is just like a dull black. I know immediately that it's the backlighting of the tv working but the screen otherwise is completely dead. He tries turning it off and on again with the remote (idk maybe he was optimistic). He calls Vizio right there and tells them the repair was unsuccessful and tells me they'll call me shortly and setup an exchange for a new TV. He says they probably sent out a bad board which he says happens often. He doesn't go back and check his work or anything. (maybe he missed a plug...?! Who knows. He then says well I've done all I can do. Sorry about that and leaves. (keep in mind, he was a nice guy and I'm not sure if he's even supposed to double check his work per his work order and I'm sure Vizio doesn't want him putting my old parts back in but idk)

Now keep in mind, the tv was perfectly watchable except for a those minor issues. Now I have a TV that doesn't work at all. And maybe it's because it was a Friday night and now a weekend but I still haven't heard from Vizio about a replacement. Even once I do, it'll be however long it takes to ship and then I'll have to arrange to be there when they bring the new one and take the old one.

I just think it's kinda funny the way the dude was like "I've done all I can do". I mean you can pop the cover back off and check that you didn't forget one plug or put my old boards back in and then tell Vizio the repair was unsuccessful but that's none of my business I guess.

So I took the back cover off the tv and unplugged and reconnected every plug he messed with and what do you know, tv works. Which is good cause they said it'd be 10 days before the recertified (no the same as refurbished apparently) tv even shows up at the place that will then schedule a time to deliver it to me. Debating calling and saying I fixed it because who knows what condition this other tv is in but also who knows what condition mine is in at this point. Some of those plugs (mostly the ribbon cables) seem pretty sensitive so maybe I should just take the new one but mine still has the plastic film around the edge (like that's how new it is). Who knows where this recertified one has been or why it was returned to Vizio in the first place.

Either way, at least I have a TV in the mean time

My parents got us a Roomba690 for Hanukkah (#grownupproblems). Gave it a whirl on Saturday. This thing is pretty cool. The 690 has is wifi enabled and connects via the iRobot app which is nice if you want to turn it on when you're not home. It cleaned extremely well, didn't fall down the stairs, and negotiated our kitchen table/chairs with ease. It did get stuck once trying to go under the coffee table, but I got an alert on my phone that it needed assistance and was able to pull it out. It went on its way with ease and didn't get stuck again.

Roombas are awesome. Got the Costco one with the 2 towers that prevent it from going places you don't want it to go.

If you have a dog, a Roomba is necessary.

Ours came with one tower. Pretty cool, but I have zero use for it since we have no pets so no food bowls and I want it to clean the entire floor it is on. I might look into getting another base for our upstairs level and moving the Roomba once a week.

Just take the "new" one, man.

Also, under no circumstances do you tell them that you "fixed" it and/or imply in any way that you opened that sucker up. Solid way to say goodbye to your warranty.

The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thread! - Sully - 12-20-2017

Yea I thought of that and won't. Even though I helped the "tech" take the back off when he did it because it was alot of screws and it was Friday evening lol. At least I have a TV until the new one gets here.

Also, if you have pets that shit in the house, don't let Roomba run. Without supervision lol.

Got the Note 8 through work. Absolutely love it, screen is gorgeous and the pen is pretty handy for notes and signing documents (previously used my surface for that, no pen and paper for me.)

My ATT store was also offering a deal for trading in my S7 Edge. Since it's a work phone, and my screen was cracked anyway, i took the deal. Got the IconX headphones (the samsung Airpods answer), Gear VR and extra USB-C cable.

IconX are actually pretty neat - i wouldn't pay the money for them that they want, but for free dollars they're pretty sweet. Fit well in my ear, nice and snug and could see them being good for a run/workout. Automatically connected and disconnect and come with a little charging pod. Favorite feature so far is the ambient noise. Sounds counter intuitive in headphones at first, but handy when walking around the city and being somewhat aware of the surroundings. I normally wear my over the ear Bowers and Wilkins and those block out a bit too much and i'm in my own little world.

Haven't gotten to playing around with the GearVR that much. Seems pretty cool though.

Do Roomba's work pretty well for longer dog hair like husky hair? Might be nice to not have to sweep that up constantly.

The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thread! - JustinG - 12-20-2017

It picks up well. 99% use it on hardwood and randomly upstairs on the carpet. I don't think suction will be an issue, but emptying the catch can.

We have a 50lb short haired lab/terrier mix and run 3x week and need to empty the catch can weekly. My guess, a long hair would need to be emptied 2x week.

I would not consider the Roomba a full size vacuum replacement in a house with majority carpet where the dog spends most of it's time.

You would probably want to look at the 890 at a minimum. Extra suction and "tangle free rollers".

RE: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thread! - RawrImAMonster - 12-20-2017

Damn those are a lot more expensive than I thought they would be. I'll just stick to sweeping as needed.

The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thread! - JustinG - 12-20-2017

FYI, the Costco one is the previous gen 800 series Roomba. Nothing really new suction/roller wise on the 890 you just get the wifi.

$50 off at the moment, and you get the 2 towers.

$329 is worth it.

Any recommendations on wireless headphones, preferably noise cancelling? Daddy is mulling an upgrade this year from the Beats Solo HDs I got for free on our last company trip. Wires get super annoying when you are traveling in and out of airports

I am going to swing by the Bose outlet in Leesburg when I'm up there next week and see if they have the newer QCIIs to try, that seems to be my front runner right now
