Had one of those given to me by an ex-girlfriend's dad. I gave it back when we broke up. I was gonna cut it off and make a BOOM stick out of it.

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - V1GiLaNtE - 09-10-2009

^^ I've been thinking about doing it.. but a 20 ga would be more practical to hold in one hand... trust me.. I shot this baby one hand and let's just say I'll never do it again.....

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - Ryan T - 09-10-2009

Bah it's not that bad, I used to one hand my mossberg 12ga all the time. However it did have a pistol grip.

you'll see these guys are selling Romanian underfolder AKs for $399. I'm REALLY tempted, just gave them a call and it's fo real. How many can I put my fellow MMers down for?

lolwut? Scroll down the page a little until you find the SAIGA 7.62X39 CARBINE for 349! Then you can have a legit Made-in-Izhmash Kalashnikov, not some shitty Romanian boomstick.

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - Jeff - 09-10-2009

I thought you didn't like your Saiga?

Jeff Wrote:I thought you didn't like your Saiga?

The fit and function is fantastic. As an AK, I think it's probably the greatest example you can buy. Arsenal Inc and Tromix both build all their rifles on Saigas. It's not so much my Saiga I don't like, it's AK's I don't like.

"What do you mean no bolt hold? What do you mean that's my safety lever? Who designed this piece of shit?"

I'll take my AR or my FAL, thanks.

But if someone really wants an AK, buying some Century Arms parts gun piece of shit instead of a legit brand new *Russian AK* for the SAME PRICE is downright foolish.

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - Kaan - 09-10-2009

damn you guys i'm going to have to post my new toy... Smile $551 out of pocket for a weapon that "retails" for $819.... i think i'm happy i spent the cash.... pics coming by tomorrow i hope!

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - JustinG - 09-10-2009

so, would an AK make an ok home defense weapon? Just curious??? Cause its cheaper than most handguns....

white97dsm Wrote:so, would an AK make an ok home defense weapon? Just curious??? Cause its cheaper than most handguns....

The best home defense weapon is the one you have.

Now that we have that out of the way, we can begin the discussion in earnest.

Ok, a rifle is almost always better than a pistol. Pretty much the only reason for having a handgun is for weight savings and concealment, neither of which is a concern when defending one's home. 7.62X39 is a verified manstopper, as evidenced by the Hajis success (or, at least, not total abject failure) in the sandbox.

Pros:
An AK is very simple, it is easy to both use and clean,
Many AK's have folding stocks, which make for easy storage
An AK is inexpensive.
An AK is small and light, making it easy to aim and carry through a house or in a vehicle.
The AK has mild recoil. 8 year olds in africa use these every day.
An AK is dead nuts stupid reliable. (Owed mostly to it's simplicity and rugged construction) Properly cared for, it is probably the most reliable weapon for the price point, maybe on the whole planet. (Yes, swords and knives included)

Cons:
The AK is a bit of a crude rifle, and can feel cheap. (Not really a concern for an HD weapon)
The sights are godawful

If you're concerned about "shooting through your wall" into a room or a building next door, then get pepper spray. The reality is that anything that will enter a bad guy with enough force to make him stop what he's doing will cut through drywall and insulation with ease. This includes anything that comes out of a shotgun. It's just like the 3 little pigs...unless you live in a house made of brick, the wolf is getting through. But don't take my word for it, ask Ole Painless. Any weapon you get you need to *train train train*, *practice, practice, practice*. You should be able to operate it, in the dark, under stress, while half asleep. And you'll only be able to do that with practice.

Many people will tell you to get a shotgun. It's not a bad idea, as shotguns are very effective when loaded with 00 buck or larger, can be quite compact (minimum legal barrel length: 18") and can be very intimidating. But they also have a lot of recoil, and can be very heavy when loaded with ammunition. If you choose a shotgun, resist the temptation to take the buttstock off and put "just" a pistol grip on it. You are not the Terminator, and that is a bad idea.

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - JustinG - 09-10-2009

wow, didn't expect all that, i was kinda kidding. would be kinda cool to walk down the stairs with an AK and just start spraying bullets at the bad guys though. I already have a shotgun, for HD.

It's a little different when that gun.. I'm assuming is a 500 weighs closer to 5-6 lbs.. where as this gun weighs like 3..... I've shot my 12 ga 870 one handed plenty of times... But the little pardner.....

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - JustinG - 09-10-2009

OH SNAP.......Im pretty sure you just got served.

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - Jeff - 09-10-2009

Chinese AKs rock my socks. Much win for a stamped AK. Are Saigas milled?

As for HD, I mostly use a .357 snub loaded with .38+p...but I have been known to have the AK by the bedside. Right now I have the stock off of it, just a pistol grip. Freakin thing is nasty.

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - CaptainHenreh - 09-10-2009

Saigas are stamped.

The only milled "AK" I know of is the VZ's, and they're not really AK's.

(Ok, the century golani's are milled too but they SUCK)

If you're not building some kind of precision DM AK, there's no good reason to go milled. It's heavier and more expensive for little benefit.

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - Jeff - 09-10-2009

Original russian AKs were milled...

Re: Official MM Firearms Thread - CaptainHenreh - 09-10-2009

Jeff Wrote:Original russian AKs were milled...

Because they didn't have the tech to properly weld the guide and ejector rails. The *original* production ones were stamped steel, the original design called for stamped steel (like the StG44) but due to the difficulties, they switched to milling to get rifles into soldier's hands. Then they switched back once the welding procedures had been mastered, and that's where the AKM comes from, which is really what most people think of when they think of an AK-47.
