Re: Project 99 GSX AKA "MN3Y PIT" - JustinG - 07-29-2009

just an update, nothin cool just some broken shit.

So, coming home one evening from the mall, i start to hear a loud thwaping noise, i think goodspeed is in my back seat taking care of business :evileye: . But to my surprise Goodspeed isnt back there :dunno: ?!?!?!?!. Then the noise stops and then it gets progressively louder, i realize its on the Accessory belts side of the engine, then i lose oil pressure, im not worried because the OP gauge has a flimsy wire attached to it sending the signal and i assume it is knocked off by whatever was thwapping about, + no idiot light and car is running fine, I think its the inner fender cover lose hitting on the pulley or something. Get home 5 minutes after said noise. pop the hood, nothing weird. Jack up the car, and WTF, AC belt is off the Crank/Harmonic Dampner pulley. And it is eating into my timing cover. So no biggy, assume it just jumped off. Because im tired its like 11pm on a friday night, ill fix it tomorrow. Get a new belt, go to put it on, and realize the Alt belt is missing 2 of 5 ribs. WTF, get another belt, go to put it on and just decide to look everything over. Notice the crank pulley is off alignment, closer to the wheel well than it should be............... Confusedhock: :vomit: OOOO NOES, I GOTS DA CRANK WALK!!!!!!!!! Decide to check the pulley, and THUNK!!!!! Damn outer ring falls off in my hand.

OK so no big deal, no Crank walk, whew. Order new OEM pulley from JNZ tuning, they dont have one in stock but call their local mitsu dealer and have them shipe it to me for their price, awesome. Open the box today and WTF!!!! One of the lips is chipped on the pulley.

But no little chip......

Email sent, well see how fast they can get me one here, hopefully by friday.

What the pulley is suppose to look like....

Been out of a car for 6 days now. Bright Idea for Mitsu to make a pulley in a high heat turbo car, that is held together by rubber. This experience is making me realize I really really need a DD. Especially with the car getting at 98k and just beating on it at AutoX, stuff tends to break easier with that mileage and abuse.

Confusedhock: yikes!

Glad it wasn't teh crank walkz but I'm sure the bearings didn't like the pulley being that crazy out of balance.

Re: Project 99 GSX AKA "MN3Y PIT" - JustinG - 07-30-2009

Well when I wiggled it, it came off, it wasn't flopping all over the place, but still, glad I caught it so early. Cause a lot of the time the pulley will wear into the t-belt cover and often times cause t-belt damage. Which is a big problem.

Re: Project 99 GSX AKA "MN3Y PIT" - D_Eclipse9916 - 07-30-2009

Common, with that many miles on the original pulley. Ask Adam, he wasnt too happy when I told him he "needed" a new one of these because I saw the signs of this happening within the next 10k miles to his. $120 bucks later he had a brand new one from the dealer.

And shawdup about crankwalk lol, you got a 98-99 block and crank...

Im going to try and get to the junkyard soon as I need some parts also, so I will see if I can find a replacement 7-bolt lower timing cover for ya for free. Otherwise its 20-30 bucks from the mitsu dealer, I would suggest replacing it after seeing those pictures.

too far?

Re: Project 99 GSX AKA "MN3Y PIT" - Steve85 - 07-30-2009

Glad you caught it before it got ugly. I discovered mine when I was checking the timing once and it appeared to be completely random...like no way the car should even be running.

too far?

Nah, it's only a couple inches. I've seen Peter North clear the span of a living room.

seen?

Re: Project 99 GSX AKA "MN3Y PIT" - Maengelito - 07-30-2009

haha, we've ruined this project thread

Wow....

Re: Project 99 GSX AKA "MN3Y PIT" - JustinG - 07-31-2009

So, JNZ, the place i got the chipped pulley from, said I would have to file a claim with UPS, cause it was fine when they shipped it. I don't have time for that crap. So, I sanded down the rough edges on the chipped part and its on. After 6 days of my car being down, it only took me an hour to fix it. Kinda sad huh?

I hate my car, until I don't get to drive it for like a week. You don't realize how much power a Ford Focus doesn't have, until you get into a car with some gitty up.

Re: Project 99 GSX AKA "MN3Y PIT" - HAULN-SS - 07-31-2009

I feel like the chip should have been in the box, eh? eh?
