If you only want like 3 channels look into the the sling box.

I'm not seeing how that gets me the channels without a cable subscription also

Ahh I think I found it. Sling and sling box are different things...Question mark? I think sling is what I need to look into. I'll check it out. Thanks

Edit: so it looks like to keep FiOS internet, or Xfinity 200, I'd be looking at the same price that I'm paying for triple play going with sling.

Plus I'd still have to buy a tv tuner and he antenna. I'm close to a tower and I think it faces off the balcony so that should be fine but I'm not sure it's all worth it.

Hopefully Verizon honors the price of the promotion.

Cable and internet is just a no win situation lol

The truest statement you have ever uttered.

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - ScottyB - 09-14-2017

we cut the cord 5 years ago. never looked back. i've never worked with a cable company that wasn't hot garbage so the only thing we buy anymore is the fastest internet connection we can get.

currently with AT&T uverse internet and we have a cheap radio-shack mini antenna for over-air local TV that we almost never watch. our extended family shares an xfinity account that i stream from for my shows and most sports and i cast it to our TV's with chromecast. our router is pretty solid so we can get a good chromecast connection pretty far across the house.

its not the most cutting edge setup but we watch about 4-6 hrs of TV a week, tops, and this has saved us a ton of money to allow us to just watch the few things we really like. i get most of my entertainment from youtube/streaming straight onto my PC anymore.

For the millionth time, Directvnow works great. Check that out/do a free trial.

http://cdn.directv.com/content/dam/dtv/gmott/html/compare-packages-account.html

They are rolling out DVR support now and 4K streaming is being added next year. It started off choppy but as of earlier this year it has been perfect.

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Sully - 09-14-2017

So uhh yea, that costs more than sling and sling + internet costs more than the FiOS promotion for less stuff.

The problem here becomes that FiOS internet only costs the exact same price as their triple play bundle. Excluding boxes of course but by the time you buy the other services, you're right back up there

That is the problem I have always run into. Just getting internet and not taking a bundle is expensive as fuck. That is why I pay for the triple play and I even have a single phone jack in my house anymore. Cheaper to take it all.

I pay $68/mo for Fios internet, have an OTA antenna in the attic, and an apple TV. easy.

I never had any problem with Fios or Verizon other than their shitty website :dunno:

There are no other options? I've never seen the internet only cost as much as the bundle.

EDIT:

I'm showing FIos internet only 50/50 is $40. That plus $35 or $25 is less than the one year promo bundle. Maybe use Fios bundle for a year and when they jack up the rate at the end of the promo switch over? That's what i did.

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Sully - 09-14-2017

I don't know if I want to rely on 50/50 of its for all my media and streaming needs

You'll be fine. I pay for 50mb service in my apartment. Between Toni and I using our cellphones, laptops, two streams of Directvnow (sometimes all simultaneously) i never run into any issues.

FWIW, i have wound up using the "remote" access for Directvnow a TON. Great way to catch games on the road, etc. I was able to pull up the Dortmund Champions League here at the office and put it on a big screen for me and some co-workers to watch. Who is your cell provider btw?

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Sully - 09-14-2017

I'd like to at least get 100 but they don't offer it. Maybe I need to call them. I only see 50/50 or gig. I'd prefer gig though just to be safe.

I mean, you do you, but you're definitely fine with 50.

Only asked about cell because ATT doesn't count Directvnow towards data and gives a $25/mo discount i think.

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - rherold9 - 09-14-2017

I want to do DirectTV Now but it will actually cost more than my current plan. $90 internet charge by itself for a decent speed + HBO.

Why is internet so expensive on it's own? Because they can charge that due to minimal competition.

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Sully - 09-14-2017

Does directtv now use the streaming boxes like sling? No dish right?

I'm going to ask VZ about how much 100 cost tonight and look into Comcast too.

A channel we definitely need which sling doesn't really have is ABC. Fiancé loves watching Jeopardy. (yes I'm aware I'm engaged to a 90 year old).

Also, i haven't checked yet but in earlier research it seemed like by the time you add in the taxes and fees, you're up to $90 a month for internet again.

Don't hate on Jeopardy

Correct, no dish. I use Amazon Fire TV and stick. It also works on Apple TV and Roku.

Directvnow didn't have CBS until recently which was mildly annoying, now we have them all. Worst case, whatever you choose, you can get an antenna.

My DTV charge is exactly the $35 i signed up for. If you mean Verizon then yeah, that was something i was going to mention. That bundle still has fees (more even, as i'm sure some BS phone charges will be added) and the cable box "rental" fees.

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Sully - 09-14-2017

Yea I mean Verizon. Even that $40 50/50 would probably end up being closer to $70 min. Although without TV, there is a way to use your own router. The problem if you have their cable, your at stop settop box won't get guide info if you don't use their router. But I bet even without their router, you'd be looking at $60 min

Then all of a sudden, you're up at $100 for a piece meal setup that is more difficult to flip through and slower internet. $20 bucks more and you have the gig package. And if you factor in that VZW credit, provided they give that to me, you're looking at only $5 more a month
