None taken, that G4 sucked.

Glad the Honor is working out for you, I haven't heard of that brand, but since starting the new job I've become aware of the large, non-flagship smartphone market. We obviously aren't targeting the most affluent with customers with our brand so we end up moving shitloads of $50-150 mid-market devices and struggle to get rid of the iPhone and Samsung flagships.

I finally sucked it up and bought a new laptop yesterday. Picked up a Lenovo Yoga 720 from Best Buy for $749 after their $100 student discount (which requires literally no proof of being a student). It's got a current-gen i5 processor, 8 GB RAM and a 256 GB SSD. Screen flips around and can pretend to be a tablet, which is kinda neat I guess.

This is my first-ever new computer that is not an Apple product. So far it's been... fine? Not great. It came with the Windows 10 "creator update" or whatever, which means the Start menu is quasi-broken. Seems to be a bug waiting on a fix from Microsoft, so until then, I can't remove apps/tiles from the menu. The trackpad "clicker" is also funky and not working 100% of the time. I can tap but I can't press down to click. Disappointing right out of the box, but it's been functional about 85% of the time. Google indicates there was a bad batch of trackpads and Lenovo will send someone to your home (?) to replace it with an updated part. So, gotta call them.

Overall it's pretty cool, I guess. Just nice to be on a machine that's got a crisp, bright, high-res screen and is thin/light.

why not another apple? played with the macbook pro at micro center, being inside that store is an experience in itself. New macbook pro was within like $200 of the xps 15 I was getting there, pretty similar specs.

Was surprised they were so close in price but I got the XPS anyway.

Some of the software that I use for data acquisition (namely: AIM software) is Windows-only. I'd also like to set this up with INPA or PA-Soft for diagnostics on my needy German girls. No sense paying for a 13" MacBook Pro when I'd run Windows on it half the time anyway. Beyond all of the car software, the laptop is a really pretty Facebook and Reddit machine, soooo...

The Yoga was cheap for what it is, and has a lot of nice specs/features. Couldn't justify paying double for a MBP with similar RAM and HDD space. I took the first one back to Best Buy after work today and they exchanged it, no hassle/questions. The replacement is perfect so I think I just got a dud at random.

Tablet/stand modes are neat so far (stand mode is great on the couch), the fingerprint reader and Windows Hello login are super fast, and I'm digging the 1920x1080 screen.

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Sully - 08-22-2017

So Xbox one x details released. I'm sure there's tons of cool specs but what im thinking about is the ultra Blu Ray player. Anybody looking into picking one up though or has everyone jumped ship to PlayStation.

Think I'll hate it for a Blu Ray player? I hate my 360 but I never bothered to get a media remote so Everytime I want to pause it or go through a menu required turning the controller on then pulling the battery pack to shut it off cause the on screen menus take like 30 seconds just to turn it off

I use my XB1 for a Blu Ray player and will be upgrading to the XB1X.

I use voice/kinect to control most of the things and the xbox app on my phone/laptop to control it the rest of the time.

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - JPolen01 - 08-22-2017

I bought my xb1 mainly for the Blu-ray player and Netflix/HBO/showtime app and to play the occasional game. Works perfectly. No need for a media remote. One you turn off the controller the menu screen disappears.

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Apoc - 08-22-2017

What menu are you guys talking about? The pause, seek, etc that pops up when you perform functions while watching?

If so, you can kill it by pressing the B/red button once. No need to turn your controller off.

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - JPolen01 - 08-22-2017

I think he is talking about the main menu that pops up when you hit the middle button to turn on/off the Xbox or controller.

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Apoc - 08-22-2017

Oh, I get it now. He's complaining that he has to turn the controller on and then it takes too long to turn the controller off using the on screen menus. I think it's more like 3 seconds to turn it off using menus, not 30 seconds though.

On the rare occasions I use the controller, I just let it time out and turn itself off. I don't play a ton of games these days, but my batteries usually last a few months... so I don't think there's much downside to that approach.

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Sully - 08-22-2017

Yea I'm back in the last decade though with a 360 though so I'm not familiar with all these fancy apps and voice control. But im definitely an Xbox over PlayStation person. The main game I would even be interested in would be the new Forza's and eventually get a wheel setup.

But I've been looking at new TVs and trying to future proof and get 4k HDR so then I looked at Blu Ray players and to get a 4k HDR one, they're about $200. (probably could shop around and get a better deal) so I feel I'd get more value just getting the one x (maybe wait until black Friday sale or something) and get back into gaming a little bit.

Only thing is it looks like at launch it'll only support HDR10 and not Dolby vision HDR and from brief reading, more Blu Ray are coming out Dolby vision. It seems like it's just a firmware thing but who knows if they'll ever roll it out. The tv I'm looking at supports both so that's helpful I guess.

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Sully - 08-22-2017

Shopping for internet. Looks like I can get FiOS gigabit connection for like $120 a month (with a small cable package) (and phone which I can't find a way to get it cheaper without) or Xfinity 100mbps connection with "free" HBO for a year (and I could buy a modem for $40 instead of renting theirs. That's all about $90 (but Comcast won't let you see fees and taxes until you checkout)

Will I notice a difference? I'm not doing anything crazy or complicated. Just streaming Netflix, and browsing internet. Maybe some light gaming in the future but idk how much online I'll be doing

You guys and your fucking TV jargon. Just buy something. It will be outdated in 3 months anyway.

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Apoc - 08-22-2017

I bought the LG OLED with the idea I'd be upgrading to the XB1X for my media all-in-one. Gonna be sweet!

I think I'm on 75 mbps? I don't see a point in paying for much more than that.

JPolen01 Wrote:You guys and your fucking TV jargon. Just buy something. It will be outdated in 3 months anyway.

All that matters is the payment, right?

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Sully - 08-23-2017

So like it seems like no matter which cable company you go with, no matter what speed, or cable package, DVR, no DVR, rent their modem/router or don't, they are all the same price. $130 a month plus or minus a couple bucks. Some channel lineups change and 2 year contract or not and "free" HBO or not but it's pretty confusing how all the bundles (the cheapest best internet) are the same. Gigabit or 50 mbps, same. I'm not really a fan of a two year contract and it has a voice plan which won't be used but it seems like a better deal as long as FiOS doesn't blow. It's gigabit speed and a cable package with DVR and HBO included for year one. Or Xfinity is 100mbps no modem rental (have to buy one) and slightly less channels but still HBO but no contract for like maybe $10 less. Comcast won't show you taxes and fees until you put in payment information (which pisses me off already)

I was really looking to be under $100 total with just a small cable package. Just some basic channels but any bundle, the internet sucks until you get to 100+ channels. FiOS, it doesn't matter what you do, it's at $120 not matter how you build it it seems once they tack all their shit on

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - JPolen01 - 08-23-2017

I like our FiOS a lot. Every time our price goes up we just call and tell them we aren't interested in paying more. Gotten 4 years is free HBO/showtime/cinemax and DVR.
Better customer service than Comcast in my experience and better product. Haven't had any service issues with FiOS while our Comcast TV and Internet was always out or poor quality.

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - HAULN-SS - 08-24-2017

I'm paying 40 bucks a month for FiOS 50mbps, no TV bundle. Get an antenna if all you want is basic stuff. My internet routinely checks out on fast.com for giving me the speed I'm paying for

This was pretty much an iPhone circle jerk article, but it is looking more likely the top end iPhone is going to be $999+:

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - JPolen01 - 08-27-2017

Who knows. That article even states that rumored $999 price tag might be for a special anniversary edition iPhone. Don't they are rumored to be releasing 3 different versions I'm sticking with my statement. The version targeted for the masses will not cost $1000.
