This is a good place for this discussion. I never park the car in gear. I taught myself to drive stick and never knew that you should. What is the reason for this? In case your ebrake fails? When was the last time you heard of someone's ebrake failing abd a car rolling away?

My mk4's ebrake broke after like 6 months of owning it, but luckily it only rolled into the curb in a parking space. It does happen.
I've been told to put it in reverse since that's the (meant highest) ratio, but I don't know if it actually matters as long as it's in gear.

Plus sometimes (like in my dads accord) the ebrake can be kinda weak and if you're lazy and don't adjust it leaving it in gear ensures it won't roll. Also whenever i park face down on a steep hill i throw it in reverse and fucking heeeve on the ebrake. I don't really know if reverse or 1st is better in that situation but its worked.

Even properly adjusted e-brakes don't really hold the car that well. Ever heard of someone forgetting to take the e-brake off and drive away? It really doesn't take much effort to overpower it. If it's in gear, it will take a good bit more effort for something to move it. Also, it's much more likely for your e-brake to fail because it's out of adjustment than for something in your transmission to fail.

Mark me down as not leaving in gear. Comes partly from when I owned a car that could start in gear without the clutch pressed. But I just don't like putting it in gear for some reason. S2k did roll into the street one day cause I forgot the e brake but the way my driveway meets the street, it just rolled out of the driveway and settled at the edge. And I'm in a cul-de-sac where most people park like that anyways so no harm lol. Was surprised when I came out to find my car moved

The argument I've heard for parking in neutral is "If the car gets bumped while parked, it won't cause damage to the transmission." I dunno how well that stands up to scrutiny, I think if your shit gets hard enough to move it and damage the transmission somehow, it's probably nearly totaled anyway.
99% of the time I park the BMW in gear without the brake on, just because the parking brake is old and having it on is a redundancy, the gear holds it just fine. I'll still use it if I have to park somewhere steep.In the GTI the brake is NON OPTIONAL even on perfectly level ground. In both the MKV and the new one, putting the DSG in park and then letting the car roll onto the parking pin results in increased effort to get the shifter out of park and a really unpleasant clunking noise.

Not necessarily true. I thought that was the best thing to do, but with some experiments in the Miata it turns out that while reverse had a higher ratio, 1st way better in both directions. :dunno:
Regardless, I have always done both in gear ( or park ) and parking brake regardless of what I'm driving.

I used to park in neutral with the e-brake on for all of my past manual transmission cars, unless I was on a hill and I would leave it in 1st gear as a "just in case". I use the e-brake maybe 1% of the time in all of our automatic transmission cars, the parking pin seems to work fine unless the car is on a steeper hill and I may also engage the e-brake.

I just e-brake pull then throw it in gear the opposite of the incline. So if the e-brake goes it will hold on the transmission.

Regardless of what i am driving i always pull the e-brake, even if only lightly. Just habit.
When I had the Evo i did the same, put the car in 1st if it's level or facing uphill. Reverse if it was facing downhill.

Putting it opposite of the direction of incline doesn't do any good, as the engine won't care which way it's turning when it's not on. Use 1st always, as it's the most mechanical advantage when trying to turn the engine and thus the most holding power. Reverse is less mechanical advantage than 1st in this way.

I don't see why people park automatics without using the e-brake as well. Mostly because I hate how the transmission clunks as you rip the shifter out of Park and all the car's weight has been resting on that teeny parking pawl.

My F150 has a complete meltdown if you put it in any gear other than Park or Neutral with the brake set. Loud chimes and a warning on the dash screen of PARKING BRAKE ENGAGED so you can't manage to get very far :thumbup:

I'm not even sure the parking brake works in the Audi. Never use it. It'd probably break if I did.
