Evan Wrote:I was actually just talking with a coworker about this. The problem is that the NHL doesnt necessarily penalize the action as much as the result. ex: a high sticking is 'worse' if it draws blood. Which is an absolutely fucktarded way of enforcing rules. In every other sport its the action that is penalized, with more flagrant and severe actions being penalized worse, not what the action ends up doing (Which is largely chance)
On top of that you have complete inconsistencies of officiating such as Cookes hit on Savard and the NHL and its officials look like a bunch of clueless idiots who dont know what they are doing.

going with the assumption that it was boarding, it should have been a regular minor and gone on with the game. But because by chance the guy caught a skate wrong and hit the boards hard its penalized worse.

but really, it was a one handed shove to the guys shoulder. it was borderline "from the back" and no NHL caliber player should hit the ice that hard on a routine battle for the puck
Pretty much my thoughts exactly. If Campbell doesn't stay down its two minutres, or five minutes and no game misconduct. I don't think its the ruling that bothers most Caps fans, I think it's the lack of similar rulings in the case of the Cooke hit, the Richards hit, the Gonchar hit, etc. The NHL clearly has no idea what the hell it is doing when it comes to discipline.

TBH I don't really mind the suspension. The team has shown they can play well w/o him this year, and if anything it gets him a little bit of the rest that he missed when he played during the Olympics. Plus, I think they only have to go at about a .500 clip to clinch the East the rest of the way.

Forgot to mention this: I am SO happy to see Carlson up here for the rest of the season and the playoffs. Him and Morrisson seem to have some chemistry as a D pairing. Makes me feel a little bad for Alzner, but he'll get his time next year I suppose.

Alzner just got called up, even though he is a scratch tonight so that is good news.

Bring on Montreal Smile

Two things scare me about the Habs:
1) 2nd best PP in the league
2) Halak has played very well down the stretch

That said, the caps should still take this with relative ease. As long as Jose plays well and the Caps don't take two games to get into the series like they did last year I would think this will be over in 5 or 6. One of the keys to making a deep run this year is going to be limiting the number of games played early on. They can't go to 7 games every series and expect to be alright later on.

This week is going to take SOOOO long

edit: Cant make a post about Caps-Habs without mentioning this hit on Gill <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z69pOZ3BITU&feature=player_embedded#">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z69pOZ3BITU&feature=player_embedded#</a><!-- m -->

I feel good about getting matched up with the Habs. Montreal is playing terrrrible right now, it took what, a week or so and an overtime (loss) to toronto just to clinch a spot? Of course they can wake up for the 2nd season like so many teams do, but Id much rather have them than the red hot Rangers.
I really wanted the Flyers so we could light up their 4th string goalie, but oh well :p

Re: How bout them Caps? - Maengelito - 04-13-2010

Sorry I've been MIA...

I'm definitely a pessimist but I'm pretty worried about Montreal. Their power play is 2nd in the league (1st is the Caps, of course) and they're pretty good at drawing penalties. The Caps are not very disciplined and absolutely suck on the penalty kill. And the special teams work of any team in the playoffs can really make or break you. JT hasn't been great when returning to Montreal and I'm not sure Varly is quite the same as he was before he got injured earlier this season.

But then again, you never know with the playoffs. God damnit I'm excited/nervous.

Just to get you all pumped (turn up your speakers!)

Re: How bout them Caps? - Mike - 04-14-2010

is it time for me to hop on the bandwagon? (aka is it the playoffs yet?)

I just found a seat myself. Departs Thursday. I listen to game recaps and catch what I can but watching many games just isn't a priority...too much other BS in that time span.

Re: How bout them Caps? - Mike - 04-14-2010

i can only name 3 or 4 players.

its never too late, hop on!

Re: How bout them Caps? - Mike - 04-15-2010

2222!

Re: How bout them Caps? - Evan - 04-15-2010

that better just be the wake up call. caps played like ass.

Re: How bout them Caps? - Apoc - 04-15-2010

Jose Threeormore lives up to his name. Caps aren't going to win if they only put up 2 goals in a game. The Habs D played a pretty good game by taking away the top scorers. Caps got a lot of shots, but the Habs managed to force people who aren't the big timers to take them. I'm thinking Bruce B will need to mix up the lines to mess up those Frenchies' plans.

(Green and Schultz were -1... hmmm)

Re: How bout them Caps? - Mike - 04-15-2010

faillllll.

Re: How bout them Caps? - damnit458 - 04-17-2010

And adios Theo

Re: How bout them Caps? - Mike - 04-18-2010

can anybody tell me why they went back to theo at the start of this season? varlamov's wiki page didn't explain it at all. i missed last night's game since i'm in boston and apparently the celtics and red sox are more important to them. what happened?

Re: How bout them Caps? - Apoc - 04-18-2010

Green -1
Schultz -2

Re: How bout them Caps? - Evan - 04-18-2010

when theo has a bad night, he has a really bad night, but I still think he is the better goalie to take a team to the finals.
