Re: Video Games Thread - Gamertags in 1st post - Apoc - 03-20-2014 Evan Wrote:The fact that at the core it is the exact same game that came out over 15 years ago. I've thought this exact thing since GT2. I really couldn't see the value add, other than different cars and better graphics. I recognize that's coming from someone who played basically the same FPS for 10 years... but GT just never help my attention. Re: Video Games Thread - Gamertags in 1st post - G.Irish - 03-20-2014 That whole "trying to win a 2-3 lap race while starting from last" is also in Forza and it drives me nuts too. You have to drive like a idiot to win races. The funny thing about Forza 5 is that the drivatar system learns people's driving habits so that AI cars will drive more like real people. People end up driving stupidly to win races from the back of the grid, so in turn all of the AI cars end up driving aggressive and stupid. At least that's what people were complaining about a few weeks after launch. But yeah I agree, it seems like Gran Turismo over the years has added a bunch of stuff, some of which is quite good, before they fixed the stuff that was broken. Still, just the challenge of the karts and open wheel stuff in GT (although admittedly I can't really control the Red Bull X2014 yet) has been plenty entertaining for me for the time being. Re: Video Games Thread - Gamertags in 1st post - G.Irish - 03-20-2014 On the start position thing, would it kill any of these companies to just put in a qualifying mode? If you don't wanna start last, you can run a qualifying session before the race. If you don't care, start the race, punt your way to the front. Boom, problem solved. (maybe optional?) Still didnt solve the spaced out cars though. I remember I hated it. I just wanted to do my 2 lap race, bang my way to the front, get my credits so I could go buy the 248th car for my garage and install a turbo kit...... and thats the problem with the GT /Forza audience. They dont want a sim, they want to 'own' the supercars they cant in real life. I feel like some games like Race Driver (and NFS Shift?) did a great job with the campaign mode. You played a newbie trying to go pro. Real racing, starting in lower/slower racing series, workign your way up, real race starts etc etc. But gamers have spoken and they dont want that? Re: Video Games Thread - Gamertags in 1st post - Mike - 03-20-2014 Found this interesting today. FIFA 14 is available for next-gen systems and has been since launch. Every four years (World Cup), they put out a World Cup version that is the same engine as the game that was released earlier in the year, but with the international teams, and a lot of different play modes. The World Cup version, which comes out in a month, will not be available for the next-gen systems due to such low adoption of them. Re: Video Games Thread - Gamertags in 1st post - G.Irish - 03-21-2014 Xbox One Titanfall Bundle is now $450 at Walmart: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2014/03/21/titanfall-bundle-discounted-by-50-at-walmart/">http://www.joystiq.com/2014/03/21/titan ... t-walmart/</a><!-- m --> That's a pretty fucking good deal. Seems like a perma price cut might not be far off. Re: Video Games Thread - Gamertags in 1st post - WRXtranceformed - 03-23-2014 Stopped in to Gamestop late this afternoon and they were offering a 50% bonus for trading in an old system for a new one through the end of the day. Which would have been $450 for my XBOX. I thought hard about rushing home and packing up mine but my gut feeling says to stick it out for a while longer with the XBOX. I'm committed for a year of XBL anyway and I am hoping that some of the future games will start to take advantage of the system's capabilities. Right now it's turned off until Wolfenstein comes out Re: Video Games Thread - Gamertags in 1st post - Mike - 03-23-2014 So they would have given you a new PS4 + $50 for your used XB1? Does not compute. Re: Video Games Thread - Gamertags in 1st post - WRXtranceformed - 03-24-2014 Didn't either for me which is why I thought pretty hard on it. With Pro member bonuses, trading in the xbone an extra controller and cod ghosts probably would have let me break even on a PS4, extra controller and maybe one other game. Re: Video Games Thread - Gamertags in 1st post - JPolen01 - 03-24-2014 Something tells me that when they say old system they don't mean "old" XB1. They mean 360/ps3. Re: Video Games Thread - Gamertags in 1st post - WRXtranceformed - 03-24-2014 Yeah you could trade either a 360 or xbone in for 50% more credit than they originally would give you. Right now the xbone is $300 so they were going to give me $450 for just the system with the kinect. The original xbox or 360 would have been a lot less...i think they will give you like $100-$130 for the 360. This is contingent on you trading up to a new-gen console, or trading a new-gen for a new-gen. Anyway apparently it expired today so I'm going to ride this one out for a while. Re: Video Games Thread - Gamertags in 1st post - WRXtranceformed - 03-30-2014 Words cannot begin to express the blinding rage that my xbone created in me this afternoon. If it was 2 years ago I am not kidding, this thing would be smashed to pieces on my garage floor. I'll post up more later when my blood pressure drops some but the cliffs notes are that it bricked when Gamestop tested it to trade it in with the 50% credit continued which it turns out actually ends tomorrow. So I get to pay to have it shipped and then wait two weeks while they try to fix this (after I went through two hours of trying to get it to boot manually from a USB stick) and I lose out on the massive credit toward a playstation. It should be working when I get it back, so seriously if anyone is in the market for an XBOX I'll give MM'ers a non rape price on one. Re: Video Games Thread - Gamertags in 1st post - Ken - 03-31-2014 Between all the giant potholes and this, not sure I've seen someone with worse luck lately. Re: Video Games Thread - Gamertags in 1st post - WRXtranceformed - 04-17-2014 PS4 was the best move I've made in a while for gaming. Should have listened to Rex and gone this route from the beginning!!! Will post up the many reasons tomorrow. .. Too far gone into a session of Killzone and Infamous and need sleep before productivity tomorrow! Re: Video Games Thread - Gamertags in 1st post - JustinG - 04-18-2014 Lulz Whats your name Lee? Re: Video Games Thread - Gamertags in 1st post - CaptainHenreh - 04-18-2014 WRXtranceformed Wrote:Should have listened to Rex... Just go ahead and get that tattooed on your body somewhere. Also, would you like to join our little PS4 exiles club? We play every, er, well the day's a bit in limbo at the moment but we play every week. We're doing killzone right now, until something actually good comes out. (But let's be honest, you're probably enjoying the shit out of KZ MP) Re: Video Games Thread - Gamertags in 1st post - WRXtranceformed - 04-18-2014 CaptainHenreh Wrote::lol:WRXtranceformed Wrote:Should have listened to Rex... I would indeed. I haven't fired up any multiplayer yet as I just cracked into the games I bought last night and am getting familiarized with the controller (picked up KZ, Infamous and the Metal Gear Solid prequel). Add me and all that, gamer tag is Droit_Et_Loyal Will post my thoughts on PS4 vs. XB1 later today when I have more time...will try to be as objective as possible and leave my old rage aside. Either way it's a pretty one-sided fight from what I have seen so far. Just meaning we've rounded ole BF4 smooth, and the next gen titles haven't been flowing for either system. Second Son is easily the match of Titanfall, qualitywise...but there's no MP component to speak of. We're in a holding pattern until either The Division or Destiny. Second Son is easily the match of Titanfall, qualitywise...but there's no MP component to speak of.Yeah neither system has a whole lot available right now until later this year. Thoughts on the PS4 vs. XB1 having owned both and now that I have had a solid 2 nights and a day to session: Unboxing / Hardware: The first thing I noticed about the PS4 was that the box and packaging was very simple when compared with the XB1...Cheaper cardboard & packaging. This is cool by me because it keeps the cost down and that stuff gets tossed in the attic anyway. I also noticed right off of the bat that it was so much more simple. Hardware wise it came with the console, ONE power plug (not a power plug plus a ridiculously huge box transformer thing that sits behind your furniture and plugs into the console), one USB / charging cable, one HDMI cable, one controller and one "headset". I will give the XB1 the nod on the headset, because it was an ACTUAL headset. Sony provides a "single cord connected to a microphone connected to an earbud". Kind of like the ghetto headset you used to get with Blackberries. The controller does not have a replaceable battery slot or any battery slot at all; all of their controllers are rechargeable by default which is NICE! I didn't have to spend another $30 or whatever for a rechargeable kit or have a stack of batteries on hand to swap out. I had always felt the PS controllers were inferior for a couple of reasons, however they got this one very right. I like it much more than the XB1. It is more ergonomic than it used to be, the touch pad in the middle is cool in that it allows you to interact with some games and I really like the built in speaker. It reminds me of my wife's WiiU controller and makes for an interesting game experience (in Infamous for example to spraypaint a wall you turn the controller sideways and shake it and it sounds like a rattle can). I can't remember if the XB1 controller had a "Share" button and I don't know how much video I will be sharing but that's cool too. Not having the Sony version of the Kinect thing packaged also really made setup pretty simple. Setup: The headset was about the extent of the Xbox's winning. To put this in perspective, I unboxed the XB1 after getting it back from the repair facility, plugged it in, set up a fake profile so Gamestop could test it out properly, and it requested an update. It took 45 minutes to update. I am not kidding, it took me longer to come up with a Playstation gamertag than the entire setup process combined. The initial download and software update took just over 5 minutes. Want to pair a controller? Sure! Plug it in with the supplied USB. The guy at Gamestop was trying to pair another XB1 controller to my console and he couldn't...he muttered that it was annoying how complicated XB has always made pairing devices. Who would have thought simply plugging in two pieces of hardware could pair them together instead of an annoying string of button pushes? Interface / Dashboard: The PS interface is at least 1.5-2x as fast as the XB1 and not as ridiculous to try to use. I am still playing around in the dashboard a bit but everything seems pretty straightforward. The PS store is a little confusing at first, however I will say that the fact that they offer PS Plus members a few free games a month is SWEET. I realize that they do that right now for the XB360 but I don't think it is available yet still for the XB1. I downloaded Resogun which is a freaking sweet free game as well as Warframe and Mercenary Kings (Metal Slug tribute). Game Experience: The graphics and smoothness of gameplay are just flat out better on the PS4. There is no way around it, and I have had a few other people over who have played both systems and they all agreed. All edges of shapes and planes are super crisp adn there is basically no visible pixelation like there was with the XB. There is really no "slow down" or glitching when scrolling or turning quickly. There is a scene in Infamous when you are sitting next to an old woman in bed and the wrinkles and skin on her face looked more real that any system I have ever seen outside of a PC. Water and shadows are where this system really shines. I did have some weird audio glitches when playing Killzone but after some sound setting tweaking it has been fine. I am really looking forward to the new games that will come out on this system because I feel that the focus is on the game and gaming experience and not the entertainment experience. If you are looking for an entertainment hub then the XB1 is probably going to be a better choice for you (although my experience with this in practice was far from favorable). As a pure gaming console (with the ability to run Netflix, Prime, Music, etc. etc. like the XB1) I am going to preemptively say that the PS4 wins in basically every category other than a flimsy earphone. |
