Honda is going in radical (but understandable) direction for the SI with the first ever turbocharged motor. It will sport a 1.5L tubo 4 cylinder with 205 hp (same as current gen), but a whopping 192 ft/lbs of torque! Holy Honda! You will also get a mechanical LSD, not the bullshit brake actuated that most other FWD cars use. Everything from the EX model is standard on the SI plus adaptive dampers with sport and comfort modes. The coupe and sedan are the same prices, as they have been, and are only 17 pounds different in total weight. For between around $24,000 you get a hell of a lot with this car - the only option being summer tires. Standard features include: Sunroof, 450-watt premium audio system with 10 speakers (including a subwoofer), satellite radio, HD Radio, Bluetooth telephone connection with streaming audio, Android Auto/Apple CarPlay compatibility, heated front seats, dual-zone auto climate control, an intelligent key, foglights, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel, LaneWatch (a passenger-side mirror-mounted camera actuated with the right-turn signal) is standard. Also standard are a rearview camera. This car is leaps and bounds above my current car and I would seriously consider buying this if I were looking for another FWD car. Only negative review so far is that because of the turbo there is not much high end power since there is no VTEC. But you have low end power from the turbo....so? ![]() http://www.motortrend.com/cars/honda/ci ... ve-review/ Re: Automotive News Discussion - SlimKlim - 06-05-2017 192ft-lbs.
Re: Automotive News Discussion - Jake - 06-05-2017 The new Civic is ugly as sin, as are all other new Hondas, so there's that. Re: Automotive News Discussion - D_Eclipse9916 - 06-05-2017 You are kidding right? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Re: Automotive News Discussion - G.Irish - 06-05-2017 I haven't driven one but Jeff from TOV tells me that it's pretty good, but not inspiring. I think Honda needed to slap a version of the 2.0T in there to make it compelling. Apparently they told journos at the launch that the 2.0T would've made the car cost close to $30k, but I find that really hard to believe. I guess it's competent for the money but I think the WRX or GTI would be a better value here. Worth a test drive at least. Re: Automotive News Discussion - JPolen01 - 06-05-2017 I read the same thing about the price point G. Also agreed that the 1.5L will probably be lacking but like you I would drive it to compare against the GTI. Probably not so much the WRXTRANCEFORMED. The one video review I watched said it was really gutless in the top end though. Re: Automotive News Discussion - JPolen01 - 06-05-2017 D_Eclipse9916 Wrote:You are kidding right? What else are you shopping in the FWD commuter car segment? A GTI? Tell me what's so much better about this? Way more features than a base GTI for the money. You would have to step up into the performance pack GTI to get a lot of the stuff Honda is throwing in the SI. Re: Automotive News Discussion - Scott - 06-05-2017 Jake Wrote:The new Civic is ugly as sin, as are all other new Hondas, so there's that. This. Went new car shopping for the wife last week and drove the Civic, Mazda3, and the Subaru Crosstrek, all with manual transmissions. New Civic was by far the worst from a design, comfort, and driving dynamic standpoint. Looks and feels very cheap on the inside. This coming from a non-enthusiast female who has never driven anything but Civic's. The salesmen was less than pleased when she said it to his face during his hard sales pitch. Honda has lost their way. Re: Automotive News Discussion - JPolen01 - 06-05-2017 How did you like the crosstrek? We had a loaner and it was a pretty cool little car for the two days we had it. Re: Automotive News Discussion - BLINGMW - 06-05-2017 Scott Wrote:New Civic was by far the worst from a design, comfort, and driving dynamic standpoint. That's saying a lot if it was worse than the manual trans Subaru. We tested a 2016 Impreza last year (same thing really) and it is really pretty unacceptably boring and unrefined. Absolutely no joy to be had from rowing gears attached to such a lump. They don't do a variable cam at all in the turbo Honda now? That seems like a large mistake, why not? JPolen01 Wrote:How did you like the crosstrek? For $25k you're into a new GTI thats faster and better looking. SlimKlim Wrote:192ft-lbs. You are looking at the Crosstek the wrong way, as a direct competitor to the Si and Mazda3, you are correct, it's a bore. However, for what it is, it is good. It's not trying to be "sporty" and actually the road mannerisms weren't bad at all for an appliance vehicle. I'm holding out for the redesigned '18 that's coming out soon before making a final call. Honda is trying to hard with the new Civic, they just need to chill out and remember what a Civic is. BLINGMW Wrote:They don't do a variable cam at all in the turbo Honda now? That seems like a large mistake, why not? Kids have been combining the two since vtec came out (sometimes with hilarious results), I'm not sure why Honda can't figure it out. I do know that the Si motor has a lot left in it and Honda has detuned it for longevity. Re: Automotive News Discussion - BLINGMW - 06-05-2017 Scott Wrote:You are looking at the Crosstek the wrong way, as a direct competitor to the Si and Mazda3, you are correct, it's a bore. Fair enough. But if it's going to be boring and unrefined I'll take the Honda Fit and save a few grand. :dunno: Re: Automotive News Discussion - CaptainHenreh - 06-06-2017 BLINGMW Wrote:Scott Wrote:You are looking at the Crosstek the wrong way, as a direct competitor to the Si and Mazda3, you are correct, it's a bore. Scott's spot-on. A crosstrek is an appliance, and it's good at what it was made to do. Prius is the same. Not designed to thrill, nobody's buying it FOR a thrill, so dinging it for not being "exciting" seems...misguided? If I want something to tickle my gizzard every time I turn the key (?push the button?) then...I'm not buying a fit or a crosstrek or a prius or a mazda3 or anything near that. Re: Automotive News Discussion - Jake - 06-06-2017 The Crosstrek has a pretty dated interior (as do most Subarus) but it's functional. My friend Will bought a 2017 Golf a few months ago, and it came from a VW/Honda dealer. We sat in the new Civic coupe and neither of us liked it a bit. The bizarre exterior styling combines with a really poorly-laid-out and cheap-feeling interior. I'm not sure if Honda really has a giant letdown on their hands, or if VW is just good at the "simple and nice styling" mixed with "cheap interiors can look good!" mantra. Either way, GTI >>>> new Civic Si. Easily. Re: Automotive News Discussion - G.Irish - 06-06-2017 The GTI typically has the best interior in the segment, followed by the Mazda 3. However, the 3 doesn't have a sport version anymore so it's out of the convo. The current Civic has a much better interior than the outgoing model and is better than the average car in the class but it's not as good as the 3 or GTI. If someone is looking at the Si or GTI, on paper the GTI is a better choice. We'll see how the handling and performance stacks up when comparos start getting published. But like I said, for the money I would buy a WRX over either.
