Re: Automotive News Discussion - Jake - 04-27-2017

That's really cool, props to Nissan. My friend Tyson (of 500k-mile-Acura-Legend fame) has told me that a lot of parts for those and other older Acuras are becoming NLA. Apparently if you need a clutch for a manual-trans Legend, you're almost SOL by now. Lots of that (small) group of enthusiasts comb junkyards to save every restorable/cleanable part they can.

3D printing could be super helpful, like Goodspeed said...

Re: Automotive News Discussion - JustinG - 04-27-2017

If I recall, Year One and numerous other aftermarket manufacturers actually bought a lot of the machinery needed to make the parts they do directly from GM/FORD/Chrysler etc. So they really are making OEM parts.

F100 panels used to be non existent outside of fiberglass or junkyard finds. Now that a company bought the machinery and dies to reproduce the body panels you can order as many as you want in raw steel just like you could in the 50s.

JustinG Wrote:Pretty sparse article, but basically Nissan/NISMO is going to start manufacturing parts for old cars again starting with the R32, then 33/34, 300zx, and Z cars down the line.

Would be cool if Honda/Toyota/Mazda start to follow suit.
When old man Honda was alive he mandated that Honda would continue to make parts for every motorcycle they ever made forever. Unfortunately after he died snake-ass beancounters did away with that policy.

Re: Automotive News Discussion - ScottyB - 04-27-2017

skylines are already getting $$$ now that they're legal here in the states, I wonder what that will do for their values now that you can essentially make one a semi-reasonable purchase with OEM spares coming online.

Goodspeed Wrote:I've often thought a solid business case could be made for starting a parts repro company like Year One and all the other domestic muscle/classic car/truck companies for import cars.

the problem is that they made a billion mustangs but not many supras. even if you had some mega baller guys restoring old MKIV's you're only going to sell things to them once. you'd need to supply parts for at least a dozen old japanese cars at the same time, or do parts for big components that are shared between multiple cars (like a trans for a supra that an R34 also uses)

its a super cool business idea but the cost of tooling for a bunch of different cars might offset those sweet sweet profits.

Legit concerns. Luckily BMW is still producing e30 stuff so my e36 fetish will probably be satisfied for many years to come!

I can't tell if I'm getting older, or if movies are just getting stupider.

Some thoughts

1.) This director gave us Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, so based on that alone, it's probably worth seeing.

2.) I get that it's relevant to the plot, but all I can think is how many fuckwit 17 year olds are going be trying to do handbrake turns behind Target while blaring music through earbuds.

3.) A cherry red hawknose for a getaway vehicle? Not even a Leggy GT in a low key color, just went for the straight up cop magnet eh?

Re: Automotive News Discussion - JPolen01 - 05-02-2017

Saw this preview the other day. Is this not the Ryan Goseling movie just with a young kid?

Re: Automotive News Discussion - ScottyB - 05-02-2017

i remember seeing the trailer and thought some kid with a WRX made his own fan-made pet project at first. then i saw the other actors and couldn't believe it was real. then to have them pick such a bullshit getaway vehicle...and i even like subarus. at least pic something that's cool like an old 90's WRX or a proper STi. a stock WRX from 2006 isn't a classic, or fast, or even subaru's best car. and if i'm being a real nit picker, its way too small to even remotely consider as a getaway car.

i love how they also mixed clips of him shifting the automatic while driving the WRX to completely confuse you....that shifter looks like its from the other car in the chase scenes, and the WRX is clearly shown with a manual in different scenes. just horrible editing.

its a movie about a quiet, under-the-radar savant getaway driver with an amazing reputation, who takes a job that gets him too far down the rabbit hole. sounds pretty f'ing familiar. hollywood is such a bunch of whores sometimes.

Does he wear a jacket with a scorpion on it? Does he write letters? EVERY DAY FOR A YEAR?

The new 850i has a 2.3 liter twin charged four cylinder generating 340hp coupled with BMW's new
Elektrischeverstärkung hybrid system for a total of 9 million horsepower, trust us you're totally gonna love it. Also it's gonna weigh a zillion pounds despite having anything that could possibly be hit in a parking lot or by hail being made of carbon fiber or aluminum.

BMW 8 Series Concept

I'm not sold on the front grille, but otherwise it's a very good looking car.

Re: Automotive News Discussion - JPolen01 - 05-26-2017

I dig it. Not the front though. And it kinda of just looks like a current gen 6 series with sharper lines.

Re: Automotive News Discussion - SlimKlim - 05-26-2017

I like the rear quarter view but I really hate that grill. It should be about 25% of the size it is, the teeny kidney are one of my favorite features of the OG 8-series.

In other news, I missed, or forgot, that the RS3 was coming here and oh holy god do I want it. 400hp Turbo-5, AWD and a dual clutch in a pocket sized package? What more could you want in a DD?

Re: Automotive News Discussion - SlimKlim - 05-26-2017

:dunno: I've gotten along pretty well so far just abusing my tiny cars. I actually need to get mulch this weekend and I was wondering how much weight I could reasonably expect my shocks to handle. Pretty sure i could stack 1000lbs of it in there pretty easily.

Re: Automotive News Discussion - Jake - 05-26-2017

Look at your payload sticker, subtract your body weight and however much fuel you have (6 lbs/gallon) and that's the answer Wink

Psh, that's the answer for bean counters. He wants the REAL maximum.
