On another note, I got my Acer R13 Chromebook today......

It is awesome sauce, no point in reviewing, cause you assholes don't care.

Casting is different from Screen Mirroring.

Mirroring = broadcasting your phone/tablets screen onto a bigger screen via wifi direct type communication, and your phone/tablet does all of the streaming.

Casting via Chromecast = Taking your phone/tablet telling it to cast to an enabled device (TV, Chromecast Video or Audio, Home, etc) and then the device you tell it to cast to, goes to the source and takes over the streaming directly, removing your Phone/Tablet all together.
So casting to Vizio (through their tablet) should use the tv hardware so in theory should work perfectly fine for it's purpose. And Google home could possibly work with it since it uses Chromecast and then I could have my firestick (not home controlled) for Amazon exclusive content and what not.

Would a Bluetooth speaker be compatible or does it specifically have to have Chromecast built in? And the. I guess I could always just have the Chromecast music dongle thing but then the things it's plugged into has to be on and turned all the way up all the time and then I could "control" it and it's volume through home in theory, correct?

I may keep it and play around and then I could always get the dot down the road since I don't think the speakers are rated that great anyway and use it with other things.

But I'm also torn cause I don't think I'm going to use it enough to justify it.

How does multi level stuff work? Do they work with each other if I have one in bedroom and one in kitchen? Or would they just be completely stand alone.

You can only ask status, arm, and control lights. It won't open/unlock/disarm for security. It would be cool if we had a Dot in every room and all our lights were on Frontpoint, but they're not, so I can't see using it.
Yeah i think it's more that I'm giving another external party cloud access to my alarm admin

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - WRXtranceformed - 12-27-2016

I can connect the Dot directly to our Vizio soundbar / surround system in our living room via Bluetooth, which is cool for music, but then I gotta manually change it back to the TV when I want to watch it. I can do the same thing with my cell phone, or tablet, or laptop so yeah I'm with Chris it's just kind of a novelty really. If it was me and I cared (which as it sits right now I don't really), I would just get a set of cheap dedicated speakers and connect it to the aux in. The stock speaker on the dot is pretty decent if you're just in the kitchen listening to the news or music or whatever.

So in other news. You guys remember that big long obnoxious period of time I was shopping for a new router. Well I finally got around to hooking it up (plugging it in pretty much). I ran my first speed test through Google and whoever it partners with for speed from my phone and got like 33 down and 20 something up which seemed good cause we our on the lowest tier of Internet speed from Comcast right now which is 25. The second test right after on me tablet resulted in like a 4 down and 7 up. So I tried again from phone and it was like 0.75 down. The rest of the tests throughout the night were pretty miserable with almost all the down tests being under 10. The ups frequently went into the high 20's though which I'm not sure what that means. I didn't try from a computer and I didn't try wired which I need to do both I suppose. I was pretty much the only one using the internet with the two devices at the time.

So if I do wired and get good results, it's the router that needs adjusting? Any tips on improving speed? Router was set to mostly auto as far as things like channel and stuff go. I was using the 2.4ghz band with the 5 turned off completely. And it was set to mixed wifi and not a specific type.

Will you call comcast/verizon/cox/generic provider and let them figure it out? This saga has been going on for the better part of 2016.

It took me like 4 months to plug in a router.... What do you think the timeframe for calling a cable company with horrible customer service will be

Before you call your ISP you need to download the Wifi Analyzer app and figure out what channel your router is broadcasting on. If it's on "auto" it's likely on the same channel as anyone nearby you. If you live in an apartment or townhouse complex you could have potentially a dozen interfering networks all on the same channel. Manually pick a channel that's far away from the others and less "crowded". Also, you want 5G on and you want to connect to that. That's where you're going to get your fastest speeds, albeit 5G doesn't generally penetrate to the furthest distances as much as 2.4G unless you have a really good router. You can turn off any "guest" networks. I would try those things first, and then also make sure you have a decent modem not the junk Comcast gives you (assuming Comcast let's you buy and use your own router, check their site for compatibility).

Once you get your hardware set, if you are still having issues then I would call Comcast.

This is true. Damn it Matt.

Not even worth continuing without testing wired speeds.

Then do what Lee said and check channels.

Report back in May of 2017 once you have done the above.

Got it. But let's make it June. I'd hate to rush it or anything

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - JustinG - 12-30-2016

we like carrying insurance on our cellphones, cause nothing like carrying around a relatively fragile piece of tech in your pocket that cost $600.

Casey just got an iPhone 7, but Verizon's insurance seems dumb now compared to others. $9 month with a $200 deductible.

So Apple Care+ or SquareTrade?

Neither - use an otterbox. Big Grin

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - JustinG - 12-30-2016

I used to love an otter box, but with a 6p, a large case like that make me need to carry a backpack just for the phone.

Casey is a no go on an otter box as well.

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - JPolen01 - 12-30-2016

No case. No insurance.

Re: The official tablet (and other useless electronics) thre - Sully - 12-30-2016

You could go cheaper tier not that $2 makes that much of a difference but they tried to pull that $9 thing with me. That extra $2 is for tech support or something. The deductibles have gotten ridiculous though. Hence why I've had a s7 with a shattered back since the second week of owning it... And I have the insurance. Paying $140 or $160 for a refurbished phone seems stupid to me though... Not sure why I pay it now actually

So we got a few pull out method bros up in hurr!

I am super careful with everything, and for some reason I drop my phone all of the time. Case is mandatory for me
