Dammit. Well you gave me pause to just use the standard CMMG parts in the LPK I got for the SBR, so I'll check out some fancypants forward controls for that build and come back around at some point.

Basically. It was the big "hole" in my collection, no wheelgun. I also really enjoy hunting with a handgun, it's an extra challenge and a lot lighter to pack, but after a bunch of false starts with bottom feeders I think the magnum revolver is just the way to go, there. I had that 44mag redhawk and it was fine (though yuuuuuuuuuge) and I had a little pilipino copy of a Detective Special that I ran some .38spl +P out of that was highly unpleasant but ultimately fine.
The trick here is that this is an N-Frame. Same size as the original "357 Magnum Hand Ejector" in the 30's, and she's pretty large. The alloy frame lightens it up a little, so for as "big" as a gun as it is it feels much lighter and balances really well in the hand. So while I'm sure shooting some Buffalo Bore tactical nuke loads is going to be unpleasant, my guess is that the average "full house" load is gonna be fine. .357 and .44 are very different animals,
I also noticed my reloading press has been gathering dust, mostly because I'm super nervous about loading a bottleneck high pressure rifle cartridge. But a straight-walled, rimmed, .38 caliber, don't-need-to-cycle-an-action cartridge is about as "simple" as they come. I can buy some lead SWC's and load up this H110 that I'm not using for anything else for some fireballs at about 12c/round or I can get some less violent powder and load up some bird farts for newbs.

So, finally shot for the first time in my life today. Jumped whenever my Dad shot next to me for the first half of the bullets. Slowly eased in and only quivered when I wasn't shooting. Have been looking at smaller caliber pistols for a bit now. Shooting was very interesting. I felt fine when I was shooting not too much adrenaline a lot less than driving at the track. It's the sound next to me when my Dad was shooting that made me jump. Weird or normal? Idk. Anyways.
He owns a Beretta and XDS. Both are a 9. Beretta was a lot easier to shoot obviously with a longer/heavier barrel and I liked it a lot more but I was looking at a cheaper gun for a 1st timer that was decent. My girlfriend's dad recommend the M&P Shield and look for it on sale. He was in the army and does some special training now so that's what he said for a cheaper, 1st timer. It's similar to the XDS my Dad has. Simple and easy to use though. I like the way it felt in my hands as well compared to where the Beretta I didn't know where to really put my thumbs since there is a bunch of things on the side of the barrel. Other than that not sure what else to look at. Thoughts?

You'll get used to drowning out the noise of other people at the range. I finally went back after a good 6+ years of not shooting at all and it took me 50 rounds to relax and just focus on breathin' and shootin'.
If you want something that you can learn on, and use for home defense, and potentially carry with a CCP in the future the XDS and M&P Shield are good options.
If you really just want something to practice shooting get something .22LR, the ammo is infinitely cheaper, with a 9mm or .45 you'll end up spending more on rounds than the firearm if you actually go to the range frequently.

+1 on the Shield, mine is in .40 and it's a little beast. Can't go wrong with an XDS as well, I own the "big brother" XDM and it's a great weapon

If you are just learning to shoot I'd start with a bigger pistol with a longer barrel/more grip to play with. It's easier to become proficient with a larger pistol and then work your way down to a CCW. Also if you want something just for home defense and not to carry, get the longest barrel you can stand to keep in your nightstand. Longer barrel = longer sight distance = more accurate. That's just my opinion though.

I would agree with this. For CCW, Shield all the way. Its what I carry and I love it. I had a M&P compact I loved and wish I'd never sold. I had a full size for about a minute too, but Rex has it back now (or maybe not). But if I were learning to shoot, I wouldn't do that on a small gun. The Shield is certainly even tempered, and fits well, but I've also been shooting guns almost my entire life, so I wouldn't know what it feels like to learn on a smaller gun. Also of note, don't get the biggest gun with the biggest caliber either to start with. This mostly happens to women when a man buys them their first gun, but f'real, you don't need something that's gonna buck on you while you are shooting. Do yourself a favor and go out with a bunch of people who have different handguns and finger fuck them all. Its stupid to buy a gun you won't shoot just cause someone told you it was good. Find the one YOU feel comfortable with and buy that one.
