Im going to go ahead and take that out of context before anyone else does

Re: Project XJ - Jeff - 02-24-2010

Well, I'm working on "pimp my rack" at this point. I just got my Hi-Lift jack and a buddy is hooking me up with a mounting bracket kit that was originally for a TJ bumper that I am going to use for my basket. The tire is ratchet strapped down and it started to come loose so I devised and built a new carrier for it. Here are concept and final pics. Only thing left to do is a little more paint.

Anyone here do the like bike hauling or whatever with gutter mounted rails or roof racks? I'm trying to decide how I want to mount the basket to the truck still. The stock cross bars are starting to come apart it seems so I need to replace them. My options are bracket kit for the stock luggage rack rails or a bracket kit for the rain gutters. They are the same price and rated the sale so its just a "how it looks" type thing. My basket is larger then the recommended size for a Cherokee...so I'm thinking the rain gutter might work and look better.

For Cherokee Rails http://www.kargomaster.com/files/instructions/CHEROKEE%20TYPE.pdf

For Rain Gutters http://www.kargomaster.com/files/instructions/RAINGUTTER_mount.pdf

Please take a look and give me your thoughts. Look at the earlier pics of the stock rail mounting, that is almost how it will look, where as the gutter will put the mounting out to the sides more.

Re: Project XJ - ScottyB - 02-24-2010

i think the gutter mount looks sturdier and better looking with the wide stance but will this interfere with drainage and promote rust?

also, what's to stop some hoodlum from stepping up on your truck and pulling your wheel off the top? i'm not sure how you secure a giant wingnut like that. also, is there some welding goop on the threads in that 3rd picture?

love the idea though. you may even be able to fabricate a small diffuser/"chin spoiler" for the front of the basket to deflect some air over the top of the rack and tire and keep your wind noise down and MPG's up on the road.

Re: Project XJ - Jeff - 02-24-2010

All-thread has a hole in it for a padlock. I don't know if they will really promote rust or not. I plan on putting that door edge guard on them to keep it from digging into the paint.

Re: Project XJ - Jeff - 02-24-2010

Interesting note. In my warrior products literature they site the gutter as the best place to mount a rack and to not even offer brackets for the factory luggage rack rails. Further, they go on to actually rate the rack's actual capacity using the gutters...400lbs. KM said to follow factory guidelines for the rails and that they had no specs for the gutters...in effect telling me not to exceed 150lbs on the rails....including the rack itself at a stout 65-70lbs. With a 65lb tire and wheel and does not leave much room for much else...let alone enough room for my comfort to reside. Bodyshop guys told me that the gutter is stronger then the roof itself because the gutter is a mating of 2 and sometimes 3 pieces of metal where the roof meets the sides. So seeing as the rails attach to the roof via expansion nuts, they concluded that the gutter would also be best.

Being from the hood for a short period of my life I've learned that a hoodlum will take anything whether it's locked or not. I've heard of a guys transfer case being stolen while his jeep was sitting in his driveway. All Jeff has to really do is take a bicycle lock and run through the wheel and around the rack itself and it will keep honest hoodlums honest. I think the tire carrier looks good Jeff and I think the gutter mount is the way to go.

Re: Project XJ - Jeff - 02-24-2010

Its got a bike lock on it now to keep them honest because the only thing holding it down is a damn ratchet strap. I think the gutter will be the way to go to, I think it will look the best seeing as the rack is so large. Gonna look for a steal of a deal on some lights for the front and maybe make some brackets to hold a shovel and axe up there.

ideas for you

Re: Project XJ - Jeff - 03-01-2010

Well we took the roof rack back off in preparation for installing the gutter mount kit. We removed the stock roof rack cross rails as the gutter mount is lower profile. Sorry for the bad pics, I think my camera might be getting ready to take a dump.

It looks horrible slick topped!

Zach's Jeep
[Image: DSC03437.jpg]

First thing was to bolt on the custom tire carrier I fabbed up.

Zach was generous enough to give me a set of 4XRac Hi-lift mount brackets. You can see them to the right of the tire mount here. We drilled 2 holes and used one existing hole to mount them to the cross bars and the floor bar on the outside edge. Very strong mount.

Loaded pics. These show the rack as it will be on the truck with tire and jack in place. We turned the jack around from the concept pics to better distribute the weight.

Anne came down to supervise for awhile and bring us delicious lunch.

The final project for the day was installing new U-joints and measuring the driveshaft angle so I can shim it to reduce vibrations.

Th U-joints were actually a bit of a challenge as they had to be pressed out and in. I just thought the clips held them in. I opted for a set of sealed, one time lube, Brute Force U-joints.

Then we played in the snow!

(yeah yeah, I hear you, I was up farther on the other side but the pics didn't turn out. These are bad enough.

i really like the gold/bronze cross bars - looks good

Lol, everyone's first question about them "Are those made of WOOD!?!?!"

Re: Project XJ - Goodspeed - 03-01-2010

The Super Badass® Jeep is so awesome. It just needs a snorkel. Every 4x4 vehicle looks 100x more awesome with a snorkel.

I like this one....

Re: Project XJ - Jeff - 03-04-2010

Rofl. Snorkels are expensive as hell. The cheapest one not made of fiberglass is like $350. All the companies that make them....and I mean ALL...are in Australia. I don't get it. I looked at doing a M988 (H1) intake setup on it like some guys do on their wranglers. The problem is my cowl isn't as wide so the cap would have to be really small. This one is a PVC copy that is smaller then the actual hummer cap.

Re: Project XJ - Jeff - 03-12-2010

NEW STUFF! This is a copy of my post over on novajeepers. So just ignore the user name tags. I don't think anything is out of context.

I did some business with two NOVAJeepers members to get myself a new spare. Chris (cjchris) had a Canyon wheel he was giving away in the free section. I had been painted up black and looked rather silly so I decided to strip it and have it re-cleared.

It turned out great! Then Brian (my84cj) came to pick up the Congo Cage I had for sale and traded me a 31X10.5 15in BFG tire that matches my other 4. GREAT DEAL!

And pimp my rack continues. It has taken 3 weeks for Kargo Master (via Quadratec) to ship my mounting kit. I don't know if they sent it pony express from California or what, but it is supposed to get here today. SOOO in the mean time I got an axe and a shovel for up in the rack. Zach (lc619fr) hooked me up with the axe on long term loan. It is a 7lb truckman's fire axe. The shovel I had to go on an EPIC seach for. Its hard to find a fiberglass short shovel around here! Anyway, we found it at a small co-op store in a town 10 miles down the road. The only problem with it was the pitch of the blade. We had to put it in a press to make it flatter so it would not touch the rack.

So after that book of reading these are the pics. I use the bracket kit that came with the Congo Cage for mounting a basket to it to make my axe and shovel mount.

This was the inspiration.

This is what I started with.

This is the result! Worked out pretty slick.

Close up of assembly.

So anyway. I will post pics of the barn raising that will be the install of the rack once these brackets get here. Comments are appreciated.

Re: Project XJ - Jeff - 03-12-2010

Just got the new wheel and tire mounted and weighed. It is exactly 5lbs lighter then the steel wheel and tire combo! YAY! Less weight for my weakling ass to have to toss up on my roof.

Re: Project XJ - Mike - 03-17-2010

that's a nice shovel. i'm hopping in my car right now to come steal it.... seriously though, you remove that stuff when you're not offroading, right? otherwise, i'd feel it's just a bit poseurish.

Re: Project XJ - Jeff - 03-17-2010

Most people leave the hi-lift and the shovel/axe up there if they have one. I plan on leaving it. I will come up with some sort of lock eventually, but the Jeep has an alarm so you are going to look like an ass climbing all over my Jeep with the horn sounding and the lights flashing. The only thing I plan to put up there when I'm wheeling that won't stay up there are Jerry cans for extra fuel if we go on a long trip. Of course the rack can also haul other things, camping stuff, cooler, whatever is needed. Hell I suppose a BIKE....if I ever was so bold. Rated for 400lbs, I have about 100lbs in it right now.
