3.5 hours for something that can almost fit in your pocket?
I would consider mac if they had something you could option down to that price range. I don't need a super computer when im on the road.

My dad works for a geothermal energy company that's completely un-tech-savvy. They don't build/design the stuff (well... one guy does some), they just sell it and promote it internationally. Their only clients are gov'ts.
Well of course they have. They're new and not everyone already has one. Growth for a new product is an exponential decay and the curve will flatten for the iphone at some point. It may be above the BB, it may not, I think it's too early to say. I live in the old-school IT world and see ~15 blackberries to every iphone.
Ah you see, that's the key... they sell and promote... that's really the market I was talking about before, not designers. The sales and "business owners" of our products are the ones using macs but those of us who do real work :wink: use PCs.

...and that's pretty my previous argument against Macs. I bought the wife a 15.4" WSXGA+/1.5ghz/2gb/160gb for $700 from Dell. That's way better than the two machines I have from work (and I'm in an IT company!) and FWIW, when asked about Vista she says "I don't know why people complain about it."
I'm sure people love their Macs... they must, because the only people you hear talking about market share are Macs users.
They're just barrier to work in my office and cost-prohibitive elsewhere so I don't buy into it.

btw, Anne just bought a $500 Compaq laptop.
She wanted the cheapest thing out there because her shitty company wouldnt buy her a laptop to travel with even though she is gone a week or 2 every month.
I expected a pile of ass given the price (like my $500 toshiba) but Ive been pretty impressed with it. The build quality is superb, feels like a tank. The screen is great, and even with a 1.6 chip and 1gb of ram it runs vista premium snappy.

Edit: Especially considering all a "Mac" is now is a fancy looking Intel box running OSX. I wish Microsoft would release a patch for Vista/XP that blocked it from running on a Mac, although I guess that would be a bad business practice.

3. Spoken like someone who doesn't own one. I could give a shit about the fancy packaging. I like their support (edit... love it). Time machine is a slice of heaven. The built in camera is great. Backlit keyboard is great. LED screen is also heaven. Small form factor with no loud ass fans is great. Front row is great. Spaces and expose are great. Hell.. back to time machine... if I had had a windows PC and it'd gotten stolen, I'd have been down from work for at least a couple of nights as I pieced my shitty winbloze machine back together. Try copy and pasting programs and their settings on win. Try restoring a user account from a backup on win. With time machine, I was back up in like an hour (unsupervised). I hit the ground running at work on monday morning. I officially *LOVE* Time Machine.

My boss has his iPhone sync'ed up to our exchange server, FWIW. I asked him about the phone last time we had lunch - its definitely slick and now that iPhone with 3G is coming out I might have to get one.

Machine turnaround for a hardware issue on a Mac vs Dell when I worked at CampusNet was about 3-5 days for the Mac, 2 days on the Dell.
Norton Ghost = Time Machine, I can buy it with the money I saved upgrading from OSX 10.0 to 10.1 to 10.2 to whatever it is now. Who charges money for service packs? Just be thankful someone didn't yank your external drive as well.
You are arguing hardware. Nothing is stopping Dell/Toshiba/Gateway from releasing baller laptop screens/keyboards/mice/cameras. I / most PC manufacturers don't think the sweet packaging is worth the extra $600-$700. On the other hand, if that cool looking keyboard and 3lbs are really worth the extra $700 in your mind, go buy a Mac. If money was no contest I would..... then format the drive and install XP on it.

The hockey puck was just an example that apple values style over usability, not when I last used a mac. My overall point is that apple is not forging ahead with usability advancements at all costs, they are primarily concerned with style and marketing. Which isnt necessarily a bad thing depending on your opinion, but it is a fact.
Ive spent some time with OSX but admittedly not a ton. Im sure a lot of stuff is one of those "once you get used to it" things, but isnt good usability supposed to be able to pick something up and not have to get used to it?
