The dyno doesnt lie... with higher octane you can get a lot more aggressive with your ignition tuning and thats where you make HP.

Advance your distributor and get some torque!
the best part about dynoing a SOHC... adjust the cam timing... you automatically adjust the distributor! but for you... and DOHC... send it to Jack!

Its already at full advance..... and adjusting the intake cam on a DOHC also advances the dizzy. But, if you are running a programmable engine management this is of little difference as the base ignition timing can be set with the laptop rather than the dizzy position.
You will have to advance the intake cam (move powerband lower) to gain any additional room to move ignition timing, although I can get 14-20 deg as it is, so I see no point in moving it further than 18-20. My $.02.

Speaking of octane, I did some reading (of course everything you read is true) about turbo engines and octane, and the theoritical and some proven benifits of increaseing octane. At summit, I used some Lucas octane booster (suposidly "not road legal" and according to some independant tests it really did raise the octane anywhere from 5-10 points) in the XR. The engine seemed to feel smoother, and run cooler, but in reality it wasn't a night/day difference. Peace of mind maybe... enough so that I will probably continue to use it or get the higher octane gas at the track.

I'd like to see how a 16oz bottle of anything is going to raise octane rating 5-10 points on a tank of gas. That just isn't mathmatically possible. If you want to run higher octane order a drum of VP fuel and mix it w/ 93, that is the ONLY surefire way to run a greater octane. The Lucas stuff might have some additives in it to help with deposits and clean injectors but no way will it turn 15 gallons of 93 into 100, that's like a story right out of Jack and the Beanstalk.

I don't know about Pete's example but if you look at the labeling of octane booster, it specifically says that each point is the equalivalent of 0.1 of the octane rating meaning that if a bottle claims to raise octane levels by 15 points, it actually means that it will raise 87 octane gas to 88.5.

A "point" is +0.1
A "number" is +1.0
any octane booster, you are just adding something with a very high octane (like toulene) to the tank, that gets diluted in the tank.
Its much more economical to just go to Sunoco and buy some of their 94 octane gas.
