IIHS crash tested a 2 series earlier today and it looks like it did fairly well.

For those that don't know, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is located in Ruckersville, VA (about 20 min north of Charlottesville, maybe ~40ish min from Harrisonburg) and they crash cars all the time. I believe some of their tests are open to the public as I witnessed one years ago (I think it was a brandy new 2009 Benz E-class) when I had a friend that still worked there. You guys should organize a group to go talk to them and witness one of the crash tests.

Jag is releasing a new model called the XE next year to go after the 3 series market. I will withhold judgment until the actual car is released but the front pic definitely does it for me:

I'm not sure how they plan on squeezing 186mph out of a boosted four cylinder but I am excited to see. Although a lack of brand exclusivity will obviously result from new models being tailored to different price points and shoppers, it honestly makes sense for the company as a car company. You need to be able to go toe-to-toe with your competitors for the dollars of the people who are out there buying cars in the mid level / high end luxury segment. If executed right it will boost their revenue and hopefully lead to increased R&D on their limited release performance-based models (ie the F Type) in the future.

The Honda Civic Type R Turbo Concept (Close to production version)
Turbo 2.0. 280hp. Too bad we will never see it here in the states. :le sigh:

Re: Automotive News Discussion - G.Irish - 03-06-2014

I for one, welcome this 5 door Civic Type-R. However, I think it would probably be a tough sell in the US market. Americans don't like that 5 door the way Europeans (and other markets) do, and it will be expensive to boot.

Honda's best bet would be to put the engine, brakes, and suspension in a USDM Civic sedan, cut out the sound deadening, slap on an aero kit and call it a day. Leave out the active rear suspension to keep costs down. If there's money left over, throw some fender flares and wider wheels on there.

Re: Automotive News Discussion - SlimKlim - 03-06-2014

^ I bet that's what they end up doing. 'Murica hates hatchbacks. Something about buying a car for practicality makes you a pathetic loser unless it's an SUV. I think our hot hatch market is more or less saturated with the what, four or five options we have? The ST twins, GTI, Abarth and that Veloster Turbo thing is hot-ish. More like a lukewarm hatch.

Re: Automotive News Discussion - G.Irish - 03-06-2014

I think Americans will buy hatchbacks as long as:

-They look good
-They're somewhat inexpensive ($14k-26k)
-They have decent interiors

Stuff like the Fit, Focus Hatchback, 3 hatchback are all selling fine. But cars like the A3 struggled because it was too expensive and the interior wasn't quite up to snuff for the price (offering a manual with quattro would've helped too). Similarly the last Civic Si hatch struggled because it was too pricey and awkward looking with insufficient performance.

Re: Automotive News Discussion - .RJ - 03-06-2014

I like the 5-door, and the proportions, and the engine. The tailights are a nice touch, modern volvo-ish.

I dont like the garish wings, vents, cladding, wheels, bumpers and it seems to have 3 different lines going on with the side of the body.

Re: Automotive News Discussion - *insertusernamehere* - 03-06-2014

The Mini has survived well too, but i guess it has the nostalgia effect and name going for it.

Re: Automotive News Discussion - SlimKlim - 03-06-2014

This R&T article makes the M235i sound pretty sucky for a $50k sports car.

http://www.roadandtrack.com/car-reviews/first-drives/10-things-you-need-to-know-2014-bmw-m235i?src=soc_fcbks

Cliff Notes:

-The gray mirror caps look shitty
-It plays fake intake sounds through the stereo
-There is no coolant gauge so you never know if it's warm enough to hoon on (what happened to the variable redline from the E46/E39?!)
-The turn signals on the mirror blind the driver at night
-The steering has absolutely no feedback
-There are sixteen M badges on it. My actual M3 scrapes by with merely 9.
-The LSD isn't standard equipment

Boo.

Re: Automotive News Discussion - JPolen01 - 03-06-2014

I'm not sure how you guys care enough to pay attention to all of BMW's mumbo jumbo at this point. Granted I don't have love for the brand like some of you, but they really have lost it in my opinion. Offering all of the same cars with different amounts of doors and different prices and ridiculously confusing names just really turns me off. It's blatantly obvious they are trying to confuse consumers. :end rant:
