I'm thinking about this for plinking, introducing the kid to guns, and maybe stuff in a bugout for small game.

Funny you should bring this up. I am also thinking of picking up a lever gun, but not 22. I'm looking at the Marlin 1895 Guide Gun in 45/70. Thinking it would be a useful tool to pack away for camping trips.

I actually think the separate bag is a detractor. I'd prefer something I can strap to the bag I'd already be wearing on my back. Reviews I read where people had used both preferred the AR7, but they didn't really say why.

I'd be curious to hear what they preferred about it as I've never shot one

More compact, 25% lighter, self-contained, weatherproof - although you get varying opinions, depending on where you read the comparison. Realistically speaking, I'm probably looking at hike in/out usage (there are a lot of pit shoots around here) over bug out. I'm leaning towards something bigger than .22 for doomsday.
I think this one sums it up:
Own both. Enjoy both.
Camping, on a hike, my Henry AR7 comes with me.
In a bugout/SHTF situation though? I'd go with my 10/22.
I love my Henry. Allllllll the problems people site about the AR7 I feel Henry, when they bought the rights, ultimately fixed.
Mines not finicky, eats all ammo, feeds smooth, and always goes bang.
Henry is fighting a shitty legacy of a model other companies royally screwed up.
With that said.... my 10/22 would be the one to see me through a massive crisis or world changing catastrophe.
But camping or hiking? AR7 is in my bag.

My dad's AR-7 is quirky, but ergonomically pretty bad, IMO. At least, I don't much like holding it, so I'll never shoot it, so I'd never want to rely on it for anything.

I never knew what a mare's leg was either but now I want one.
When I was at my parents for Thanksgiving I figured I'd run down to the basement and rub a coat of oil on the WWII Mosin Nagant that has been sitting in a case for the past 10 years. I snapped a photo of the stamping marks so I could learn a little more about it. Turns out its a Finnish built M39, likely using a cut down barrel from a captured Russian M91. It has a "SA" marking on the side, which means it was issued in the Finnish Army and probably saw combat, and/or someone used it as a hunting rifle for 40 years after the war, it definitely has a lot of character marks on it. Pretty neat, not terribly rare but a lot less common than the M91 variations. Maybe in another 20-40 years it'll be worth some money, definitely more than the $100 we paid for it. :dunno:

It's official, I'm done dickin' around with the AR I built one year ago almost to the day. I've basically rebuilt it all over again at this point, and it's feeling a darn sight perfect now. The latest changes were the Faxon LW barrel with the pinned/welded B.E. Meyers flash hider & the Super 42 buffer kit, and together the changes were...shall we say drastic? Incomparable to how it felt and handled before, even down to the total lack of "twang" from the spring, and hearing the sweet sounds of letting freedom ring from the flash hider is icing on the cake.

Lookin' good bruh.
About the only change I'd personally make at this point is a light and shorter throw safety. Personally I like the noveske 60deg because it's cheap but the BAD selectors are good shit as well.
I also did a Bad Bad Thing recently, pics when it gets here.

I can't get the screw for my Magpul BUS to stay in. The first one fell out after use, Magpul sent me another one and it fell out again...so my BUS is sitting here on my desk. Should I locktite that son of a gun in or is that a bad idea? I don't know if I necessarily want it to stay on permanently but I need it to like, stay on.
