i tried 5G, but found it had an even worse signal. odd.
5G doesnt go through walls very well. 5G is pretty stupid in real world use unfortunately. I just bought an AC router not for the 5G, but for beamforming and 256QAM on the 2.4 band, which makes a big difference.

Re: XBOX 360 - Gamertags in 1st post - Ken - 12-05-2013

Looks like it may support (via patch) 802.11AC which should help with all issues (range, interference) since AC utilizes beamforming, which is awesome.

EDIT:

Just saw Evan's post. Evan, which router did you pick up? Was debating on getting the ASUS RT-AC66U

in that example, you should use 11.

Why? I might have to do this, take a snapshot and post it up for you guys

Because you're trying to minimalize the amount of signals you're overlapping with, while 9 does have any "peaks" it will overlap with more signals.

Re: XBOX 360 - Gamertags in 1st post - WRXtranceformed - 12-05-2013

What about 14?

Re: XBOX 360 - Gamertags in 1st post - JustinG - 12-05-2013

Anyone who isn't/hasn't upgraded to a new system want some 360 stuff.

Logitech Drive FX Steering wheel with pedals
3 white controllers w/ rechargable battery packs
1 Pink controller
Charging dock for the battery packs
Charging Cord for controller
Energizer charging dock for 2 controllers
OG 360 with I think 40gb HD (no hdmi, have VGA upgraded cable)

not supported on US devices, only 1-11.

I got the Netgear R7000, staples had it for 160 so I bit. The AC66 is priced well since the AC68 is out now, but it doesnt support 256QAM, which may or may not matter to you, but it gives you 600 mb/s potential on the 2.4 band.
AC68 and R7000 are essentially the same core hardware.

I have found better results by "shooting the gap" even if there are more fringe signals, than directly overlapping with a couple. In the example, the strength of those two signals at 11 is higher than the sum of the others at 9 (assuming linear relationship). YMMV.

How much does beamforming on the 2.4ghz range help? And is there a limit to how many clients you can have with this? I haven't really done much research on it, but the router at my house is beginning to die and will need replacing soon.

With the shitty router that comcast gave us, I barely have a 2.4 ghz signal in my room. The router is at the opposite end of the house. If beamforming is worth it, I may spend a little more to get a nice one. Just need one that has at least 4 wired ports as well.

honestly I just got it a couple days ago and havent had time to do 15 spot router signal strength test on it. Ive read that beamforming with N clients isnt as good as with AC clients for the time being until they update the router firmware.

I'd probably just be better off with getting a wireless access point for each floor since our house is wired for ethernet in the bedrooms. Just need to find some routers that play nice with Xbox live. We have been getting Strict and Moderate NAT types on call of duty when multiple people are online in our house for some reason.

Hrm this might make sense (I'm JMU / JMU guest):

[Image: Screenshot_2013-12-06-14-31-57_zpsh9ilxosn.png]

So which channel would be best to switch to?

Re: XBOX 360 - Gamertags in 1st post - CaptainHenreh - 12-06-2013

Yeah, I'd move to 3/4

Re: XBOX 360 - Gamertags in 1st post - Apoc - 12-06-2013

In that example, I'd go with 4. Turn off your guest if you don't use it; it's unnecessary interference.

Re: XBOX 360 - Gamertags in 1st post - G.Irish - 12-06-2013

Shall we just change this thread's name to the Video Games thread? Pretty soon none of us will be playing 360 very much.

Re: XBOX 360 - Gamertags in 1st post - WRXtranceformed - 12-06-2013

Thx dudes!

Standard networking wisdom is that there are only 3 'real' channels: 1, 6, 11 because there is so much bleed over in between (ie- they fucked up the spec)

so if you pick 4, you're getting adjacent bleed-over from all the 1s AND the 6s, and believe it or not, your router is much better at discerning between different networks on the same channel than different networks on adjacent channels. so ie- according to traditional wisdom, 4 is about the worst channel to pick.

lots of writings on the topic. here is a cisco whitepaper on it
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/technology/channel/deployment/guide/Channel.html">http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireles ... annel.html</a><!-- m -->
cliffs notes: 2 networks using the same channel is almost twice as fast as 2 networks using adjacent channels.

in that graph id try 11, though gamecock is fucking that up a little bit. see how that goes and if it works well.

if not, id shut off your guest network and keep it on 6. even though its a crowded channel and hurts your max bandwidth, its going to be more consistent and not have the dropouts and interference that you get from adjacent channels.

but your results may vary, and maybe shooting the gap works out better your situation, so just try it

yeah. would be nice if we could get a wiki component installed (like on slickdeals.net forums) where the first post after the original post is editable by everyone,
so we could have an easily updated list of everyones gamertags /PSN ids

(Btw, whats your psn id)
