Re: Automotive News Discussion - JPolen01 - 01-05-2017

If I had an extra $1500 laying around? Sure why not? I would love to swap cars whenever without worrying about depreciation or maintenance.

I get that it's nice not to have to worry about some shit, and...depreciation sucks but at least you're left with something. Whatever I'm paying X/mo for to use better depreciate at the same rate (including insurance/etc). I dunno, quick mental math puts that way above Cadillac prices.

Or way below. I'd alternate between e30's and Miata's, lighting them on fire each month for that.

Re: Automotive News Discussion - WRXtranceformed - 01-06-2017

If I was someone who did not want to actually own and maintain one (or more) supercars but still wanted my choice of driving one that was "mine" whenever I wanted, it really wouldn't be a bad gig at that price point. I wouldn't see this as like an enthusiast option, ie someone who buys a certain Porsche because they love the brand and model and want to keep it for a long time. But if you could get in and out of a Huracan, or R8 V10+, or 458 / 488, or GT3 / 911T, or even something outlandish like a drop top Rolls whenever you wanted without having to fork out $10k each oil change or getting raped on your trade in value? That would be pretty awesome.

Yeah I thought that was more along the lines of what we were talking about

Re: Automotive News Discussion - G.Irish - 01-06-2017

WRXtranceformed Wrote:Now the big question is, assuming you had the desire and means, would you pay $1500 per month for "concierge" lease/rent/whatever this is if it was something in supercar territory? ESPECIALLY if you could walk away from one model and try another one without taking a hit and didn't have to deal with the legitimately scary maintenance costs?

I'm actually really curious to hear G's thoughts on this because I know he has been doing some honest window shopping for a good while
For $1500? Hell yeah. The only time I've seen a lease for a supercar in the $1500 range is the aforementioned insane lease on a R8 a guy on the NSX forum got. The terms were:
 • $173500 MSRP
 • $14K Down w/ 7500 miles a year
 • 36 month lease
 • Residual Value 71%
 • .00178 Money Factor
 • $1560 a month

Evidently he got a car at a big discount off MSRP too so his final numbers were probably even lower than that.

So yeah if there were a business that allowed you to swap supercars Eleven James style for the price of an aggressive lease on one of those cars, that would be a no brainer.

There are companies that do the supercar share thing but typically you're paying $1500-2000 month (after a $15k-25k joining fee) to drive cars maybe 3 or 4 days a month. Most of those companies that I've seen are in the UK but there's Classic Car Club in NYC (http://classiccarclubmanhattan.com/fleet/) and Gotham Dream Cars with a couple of locations I think.

So really the problem is that there are companies that allow you to swap cars but you're only getting 3 or 4 days a month. For that kind of money I would just buy one car and be done with it.

Re: Automotive News Discussion - G.Irish - 01-06-2017

I think if Porsche offered something like this it would be much more attractive given that they have a wider variety of stuff I'd like to drive. It would be cool to rock with a Boxster Spyder on the weekend, then maybe a Cayenne Turbo during the week, then pick up a GT3 for a track day. It would cost a lot more than $1500 from Porsche and you'd probably have a hard time with GT car availability but it would be dope if one could afford it.

Re: Automotive News Discussion - HAULN-SS - 01-06-2017

I think you guys are dismissing it too soon. I got a fully loaded escalade priced to 103k - for a 60 month buy, that's $1850 @ 3%
I got a CTS-V fully loaded as I'd spec it out to 103,800

The escalade in particular has a huge depreciation curve. I think the latest gen -V cars are a little bit less so (based on 2009+ still being damn near 40k). 1500 might not be totally economical, but I think they're in the ballpark. Property tax on those kind of cars aint cheap, and neither is insurance.

Re: Automotive News Discussion - G.Irish - 01-06-2017

My thing is that there are only 2 cars in their lineup in the $100k range. How often would you be able to score a loaded CTS-V or Escalade? How often would you be stuck with a XT5 or regular ATS? I just feel like there are only 2 or 3 cars in the lineup that would make it worth it. If Cadillac had a supercar or something or mega ballin sedan it might make the deal sweeter.

From the Book by Cadillac site:

Quote:Due to high demand, we limit the amount of time you can keep the CTS-V up to 5 consecutive days. This is to allow everyone a chance to try it out.

Quote:When are V-Series available to exchange?

We offer V-series as part of the vehicle choices March-October when road conditions are favorable for driving.

So you could rent a CTS-V for 5 days at a time but only 8 months of the year. Reservations are also subject to availability. So if there is only one or two CTS-V's in the fleet you're probably not gonna get it that often. Might be a similar deal with the ATS-V.

Re: Automotive News Discussion - HAULN-SS - 01-06-2017

Hrmm..that wasn't in the original article I saw. They basically said you get to keep it until you feel like turning it back in, and that all vehicles were platinum trim or V's

Re: Automotive News Discussion - WRXtranceformed - 01-06-2017

Right, then you end up basically leasing a 2.0T ATS for $1500/mo.

I like the Porsche idea better

Wow that is...something else. Glad to see the people who are gonna get a Ford GT are getting a special experience.

Yeah, that order kit in of itself will be a collector's item pretty much instantly. What a cool ass way to order a car. I have to give Ford props, at first when I heard how they were doing the whole list/order process I 'd pretty hard but they are delivering exactly what they wanted to which was to build brand and model mystique and suspense. I mean for crying out loud, there is an unboxing video of the box they sent to select your colors on Youtube

Re: Automotive News Discussion - WRXtranceformed - 01-08-2017

So GMC had this big social media lead up to the big reveal of what everyone guess was going to be the new Terrain. They unveiled it tonight at some modern art museum. I'm super meh on it other than the diesel powerplant which is intriguing. A little surprised they didn't include the new variant of the 3.6L V6 that they are dropping in the Canyons / Camaros (I think gets them too) and used two turbo gassers instead.

Not a huge fan of the looks:

Edit: Oh and was it this thread that we were griping about shifters not being shifters anymore? Those buttons seem like a terrible idea:

Re: Automotive News Discussion - ViPER1313 - 01-08-2017

God is weeping at that shifter.

If you can even call it that.

That swoop under the front grill looks like an overweight rednecks front overhang on top of his pants waist.

Re: Automotive News Discussion - WRXtranceformed - 01-09-2017

Engine specs for each engine from a social media response to GMC's live reveal:

Quote:The 2018 Terrain comes standard with a 1.5L turbo, and available 2.0L turbo and 1.6L turbo-diesel options. The 1.5L offers an SAE-certified 170 hp and 203 lb.-ft. of torque. The 1.6L turbo-diesel pairs an SAE-certified 136 hp with 236 lb.-ft. of torque. The 2.0 L is the most powerful offering, putting out an SAE-certified 252 hp and 260 lb.-ft. of torque. The 2018 Terrain can tow up to 3,500 pounds with the available 2.0L turbo engine, while the 1.6L turbo diesel and 1.5L turbo gas engines can tow up to 1,500 pounds. Fuel mileage testing is still underway. ~Francheska, GMC Social Team

Re: Automotive News Discussion - Jake - 01-09-2017

Yeah, that's pretty awful to look at and the "shifter" is... odd.

The new Traverse, on the other hand, is not bad looking. Kind of mini-Suburban.

170hp to move that giant piece of shit around? [FACE WITH TEARS OF JOY]
